Күн бұрын

Alan finished his blower spout customization on his Gehl 400 Chopper, so it was time to chop some bedding for the cows. Alan has been using his small bale chopper, but he was hoping to chop a large amount of bedding and stick it up into the haymow. Alan's brother, Paul, decided to use his Farmall 560 to run the chopper. The Gehl 4625 Skid steer was used to move the straw bales. They chopped two of the large straw bales that day. That made bedding the cows far more convenient.

I like the straw chopper idea. I have a idea to streamline your bedding handling. If you could put a old self unloading forage box upstairs, with a electric motor to drive it like your silage wagon. You could blow the chopped straw into the forage box upstairs. Then down stairs in the stable , a simple off/on light switch could start the forage box sending the chopped straw brown to your waiting cart below. Fill the cart, shut of the switch on the self unloading box. Eliminates the work of putting the straw down, as well as the task of forking it up into the cart..

Just a suggestion put a Case tractor on the chopper that long stroke on the Case engine is a big plus it will provide the extra torque you need to spin the blades at a consistent speed resulting in a more evenly chopped pile of bedding. Maybe next year when putting in the baled hay in the mow, use the hay for a wall so you have the straw in a confined space and a bigger space, less time spent on multiple chopper set ups.
@trinitydairy
@trinitydairy 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I was going to put a case on there, but I wanted to run that 560 a little. I usually just let it pile up on the hay to fit more up there, but I was just trying it out this time, this fall, I'll blow a big pile up there, and it should last all winter.
@frankdeegan8974

It takes at least 45 horse power tractor to run that chopper right ,I would think. How long did it take to train your cattle to go from the barn to the lot ,and back?
@trinitydairy
@trinitydairy 2 жыл бұрын
That tractor is rated at 63 PTO, HP, and I think that chopper is rated for no more than 90, so I could put a bigger one on it, but I wanted to run that 560 some. The cows get the hang of it in a few days.

Why not blow a bale in the station barn and then fill the hay mow. Your moving it 3 times?
@trinitydairy
@trinitydairy 2 жыл бұрын
This was just a quick check of the set up. Now that I know it works I can blow a winter's worth of bedding up in the haymow. If I stuck the blower of that chopper into the barn itself, I'd have an inch of dust on everything. A big bale that's chopped is enough bedding for 2 weeks. It'd be more work to move the chopper twice just for one nights worth of bedding.
