I just picked up a cub this weekend. The serial number is pretty much trash so idk what year it is. It belonged to my father in laws dad. I've never owned a tractor before so I've started doing my homework on it. Came across your channel a couple of days ago. Just wanted to say thank you for posting videos. Maybe I'll learn something.

Take your hitch piece and try turning it around it should be out of the way. That works on my 140. I've been using 12 volt coils with the built in resistors instead of the external resistors. Thanks for sharing the video.

I get the coils with internal resistors to reduce that connection. 12v conversions also get rid of the extra regulator block by getting an alternator with an internal regulator. A bit more reliability. Last summer I chased around a startup issue, thought it was fuel and so on then felt foolish when I pulled the plugs last to find them like yours, doh!

Excellent video Gino :) yes Balsi Retsitor do give ghost sometime after get water on them best prevent short out is make box square 1/4 thick of wood & sit in then thin layer clear plex glass box cover lid on have 4 small in ends and metal stand of Balis Resitor to hold engine if bolt or screws and keep dry , Coil very rare give up agree 👍 to also saying ,do use High Suppression Wires at if don't best try out sometime because give lots hot spark all years around in all 4 season also Nexn & Champion brand sell them and you love those wires set if also love performance do even high price pay never want use stock ones again ! You don't need change points gap or clean often , plus Spark plugs at Factory gap to also my Neighbor farmer uses on his Farmall tractor Champion, NGK in Platinum type with Fishing Men hook ends plus thin layer of Anti Seize on threads of Spark Plugs and High Suppression Champion brand wire set plus Cap , Rotor and points from NAPA! On 15 seconds on Key Ignition Turn Over with Choke all way out to 1/4 in to warm up on Cold Starts to start with 1/4 throttle on use See thru Fuel filters!

I run Champion D14 plugs on my 5 Cubs and all the ones that come in my shop. They are a good middle heat range. For winter use, IH wanted a D21 plug but that means changing for each season. The 3886 plug is a resistor which isn't needed on these engines. The ethanol isn't helping either. Cubs don't get hot enough in the winter to completely burn that garbage.

One word of caution. Use the old points in the distributor until they are gone. The only new points worth sticking in anything are napa echlin brand. The other county line stuff is ok but avoid the points. They make the contacts out of cheaper materials now and they wear out faster and corrode quickly. You can take the wires off the ballast resistor and connect them together to get yourself out of a jam and to test the resistor. I maintain approx 25-30 old IH and John Deere 2cylinders between my collection and my father's and have learned a few things. Magneto points are a little more of a pain to mess with with the gear reduction.

The rotors aren’t very good either. Friend of mine keeps buying countyline stuff for his 350 and 450 and we’re pretty much replacing them every year at this point. Last year the 350 was running like crap, the rotor was completely slopped out on the distributor shaft and was throwing the timing off considerably. Cheap plastic.

We have run 386 Autolites with magnetos and they have been fine. The 3116 may be better. I would try them. Typically we run D-16 Champions which cross to 386 Autolite with both magneto and distributors. The 388 Autolites I believe cross to the D-15Y Champs and those are best for newer engines like the 756. The D-89D Champions are what the starting side of the Diesels take, and I don't know if an equivalent is available. But the plugs fixed it right up.

Running 3116 in my 52 cub with a 6v system. After switching from the 386 plugs the tractor starts better and easier. I'm assuming that's due to the better spark from the plugs. Also I hope you checked the gap in the plugs, mine out of the box were all gapped way to much.

Find some NGK PLUGS that are equivalent to CHAMPION d23 ( hot plugs)and run them and you will never have a problem with plugs! Also if you ever notice oil in the distributor where the points are, then the SEAL IS BAD ON THE DISTRIBUTOR SHAFT,. that will short out points. I have a friend that owned a cub several years ago, that kept fouling plugs,I tried champion ( junk) autolite ( better) AC ( fair) and after a lot of frustration decided I'd try NGK PLUGS,, ran like a dream and never fouled a plug again.

What ngk plug number do I need and do I need some sort of an adapter? Thanks.

Actually I got a question, on my 49 cub it will crank up run fine for a minute or two and then cut off, let sit for a bit and it will start right back up. The longer you let it sit before attempting to start the longer it stays running before it cuts off and looses spark when cuts off. It done this in November and June, done nothing nothing it and it went back to running fine, now it is wanting to do this. Any help please, I have diagnosed that it is not fuel side of things, thinking on off switch, coil, or loose connection in between.
