It's not just the food. Farming is the base of most economies. You can buy food from somewhere else BUT only if you have money. Most countries it is the single largest industry.

I have been watching several elections over about a decade in both Canada and the US. What is becoming more alarming to me is there is a very distinct Urban/Rural divide. Urbanites mostly care about "climate change", and there are some issues specific to Urban that Farmers can be sympathetic to. The difference though is the Urbanites control most of the politics because of population numbers, and they are idealistic and very socialist. Most farmers just want to be left alone (classic conservative), but because their population is less they have less political clout. Then add in the disconnect that food comes from grocery stores and will always be available.... The atrocities of Holodomor started because Stalin felt the "rich" farmers, mostly in the Ukraine, needed to "pay their fair share". More people died in the resulting famine than were killed by the Nazi's in WWII, and we still don't have a really good idea on exactly how many. Take a look at the last US election map. The "blue" states are only blue because they had several large cities that voted "blue". All the rural was very red. I am seriously concerned about the future of food production/supply in North America, especially if we follow the route of Europe. (Netherlands and France started their war on farmers a few years back).

What gives the government the right to steal family inheritance
@stevebabiak69973 күн бұрын
If that farm inheritance tax gets enacted, the workaround is to get life insurance where the payout will pay the inheritance tax bill. So upon death the farm will not have to be divided up for a chunk to be sold to pay that tax.
@Marilena-y9j3 күн бұрын
And that life insurance will be free?!?
@stevebabiak69973 күн бұрын
@ - you missed the point. It’s to avoid the farm having to be broken up so a chunk of the land is sold to pay the taxes. Obviously life insurance has a cost, but this idea preserves all of the farm land remaining with the family and heirs.

The farmers should go on a production strike. BUT they should take food from their crops and give it away to their local pensioners, elderly people who depend on their government pensions to survive. The elderly in Britain are already having a hard time buying food and paying the heating bill, so if the farmers could devise a way to produce less food and energy but still feed poor pensioners, that would be ideal. ❤
@Bay0Wulf2 күн бұрын
Well, except that the farmers are usually running very close to break even until the crop is sold. If they produce less and “give away” to the elderly and pensioners they can easily fall below the break even point. Aside from that, most “crops” these days are unusable by average people in the form (& quantity) that they’re harvested. If you hand a bushel of harvested corn or grain to the common person (never mind, pensioner) WHAT do you think they could do with it? YES it has “value” but not “as is”.
@sandrad96952 күн бұрын
@ What I had in mind with this hot take was more along the lines of providing the pensioners in their area with a box of fruit and veg, eggs, something they could immediately consume, from the most recent harvest. And then take whatever is left to market. Or not. If they strike, they will make nothing anyway. But they also won’t have the expenses, I get that. And I understand farming in the UK is probably different than farming where I live, but where I live in California, farming is profitable most years. And there’s always extra crop left over that farmers sell to roadside produce stands or take to local farmers markets. But, yeah, sounds like UK farming might be pretty different.
@ridleyclayburn4599Күн бұрын
Turns out the UK government sends about the same amout, that they think they will raise, to farmers in other countries! moreover, they have not talked about 'gift with reservation', which means that when a farm is handed over by the father, he should not then gain any benefit from that farm in the future!

Farmers are still considered 'serfs' by many people who know nothing about the occupation. Let's talk more about farmers, farming, big business sticking their noses into it, and stupid politicians who are being bribed to look the other way whilst big business pollutes their land. The tax is all about forcing farmers to sell off their land, and the only ones who can afford it are the big business; the monsantos of the world. Shame on us for not being awake while these things crept up. Just look at the Niagara Escarpment in Ontario.
