that is because the media has sacked 50% of its work force since 2008. They completely survive (and some of them thrive) by pandering to the money paid to them a) by corporates - for paid news / advertorials that broadcast what corporates want us to believe b) by government (the largest ads in news papers are mostly from government) - for keeping us busy with trivia that do not improve our lives (cricket, ram mandir, movies, all kinds of nonsense) TOI, arnab - all are part of this. TOI started this in 1989 - I remember as I was a youngster then and saw a decent newspaper turn into a tabloid.

It's really shameful that one section of society is getting obese by eating. And the other section doesn't even have a 1-time meal. Farmers do need additional income. The agriculture system needs structural changes.
@ankitaggarwal44706 жыл бұрын
Well said Devinder Ji. I would also add ways to reduce the cost of producing good have increased manifolds which you have mentioned. There are clear ways to reduce it. i.e Regenerative agriculture. these are the main practices which farmers should adopt to reduce losses, climate change, etc... Practices include: • Permaculture Design • Agroforestry • Soil Food Web • Animal Integration, and Holistically Managed Grazing • STUN (Sheer, Total and Utter Neglect) Breeding • Keyline Subsoiling • No-Till Farming, minimum tillage, and Pasture Cropping • Cover crops & multispecies cover crops • Organic Annual Cropping and Crop rotations • Compost, Compost Tea, animal manures and Thermal Compost • Natural sequence farming • Polyculture and full-time planting of multiple crop intercrop plantings • Borders planted for bee habitat and other beneficial insects • Biochar/Terra Preta • Ecological Aquaculture • Perennial Crops • BEAM (Biologically Enhanced Agricultural Management)

Nice analysis! Mr. P Chidambaram had decided to distribute fertilizer subsidy directly to farmers. Instead it is given to fertilizer companies. This Govt. has to give msp+50% profit as recommended by Dr. M. S. Swaminathan Committee and promised by hon. Prime Minister in his pre-election speeches

This is probably among the best talks I have heard on this issue. Crisp, and within 20 minutes, he covered everything that MS Swaminathan and P Sainath have been saying (both imho true Indians who want our country to become better, unlike the sell outs who sit in our government) . The anecdote about Norman Borlag was interesting. A tip - to paraphrase Swami Vivekanada, "You will be closer to reality by switching off your television, facebook, whatsapp and news papers".

In a developed country only 2-3% of population are involved in agriculture. In India 58% of population is involved in agriculture where the sector only constitutes 18% of GDP. There is lot of efficiency and ancient govt policies that make farmer income low. Develop agriculture markets first to open demand. We don’t export as other countries do and agriculture practices are stuck in ancient times.

Technology won't solve problem... The money ,yes yes money...the note system has caused problem.... It was barter system in traditional days... That kept the equilibrium for farmers and consumer...also climate change due to industrialization , pollution, boring of water by cities, killing lots of animals, overpopulation, nirav modi looting , malya looting, corporates looting ..everything has caused problem..lack of awareness among young generation which are obsessed with internet.... Come on... I don't see any hope..for politics is the bloody massacre of suicides,....they want their stomach to be filled, their bank balance in 10 figures, they want their security, they are the biggest culprits...then comes.. land Lords.. business people who don't give farmers the optimum money they deserve... We India needs green revolution , technology we purchase from other countries n ISRO that's enough...focus on green revolution and climate related issues...

This is a very very narrow view. Price increase will only help big farmers, who actually sell their produce. The real downtrodden are those with no land or do subsistence farming on mostly unirrigated land, they make up more than half of our population. Read Economic surveys, 12th five year plan doc, or even Dr Ashok Gulati, former CACP chair
@souvickch9 жыл бұрын
+Rahul Kejriwal There are other ways to fix around that , which would involve restructuring the procurement mechanisms . This doesn't refute the crux of his presentation that mass migration is resulting from people being choked out of agriculture and huddled into big cities on account of policies being dictated by transnational agencies like the World Bank. This is not a trivial assertion , so have you anything to refute it ? Because this guy is actually pretty credible.

2. Movement of people from agriculture is bound to happen. This is inevitable. Only a handful of leftist, environmentalists like Vandana shiva believe in an alternate model which is yet to be seen anywhere in the post industrial society. We should focus on smooth movement or transformation from rural to urban, resistance is futile. Talk to the aspirational youth from villages, you will know what I mean. Today only 30 percent say cultivation is main source of income, while for more than fifty percent, manual labor is. We need things to change and fast.

3. I very well understand plight of farming community but we as a country have limited resources. And the needs of dalits, tribes, landless, and hungry, take precedence.

When he speaks "India has money for corporates and not weaker sections".. I stopped watching. Farming in itself is a uneconomical activity. World has excess food production. No wonder banks refuse to lend farmers. Mr. Sharma has an ideological axe to grind.

There is a serious gap in his argument. firstly, the vast majority of farmers he is talking about, those with 1 hectares land holding, are doing subsistence agriculture. no matter how much you increase farm gate prices, it will help them as they are the consumers of what they grow. even assuming they switch to a cash crop like cotton and price of cotton at farmgate increased to three times the current prices, he wont be able to survive without social security schemes from govt. hence what is needed is to pull them out of agriculture, which is anyways happening for the last 5 decades, see the slums of any big city for examples. We need to provide them respectable jobs in secondary and tertiary sectors, whether agri-processing, core industry, or services. This is what government is going nuts explaining. We started the process too late, during Vajpeyi era and then moved on to provide temporary respite measures like MGNREGA, etc as the UPA thought save the present first, future we will take care of itself. Current regime is looking at future in a better way. present is bleak since independence and will continue to be so until we work now to improve the future which is the present for our children.

If we pull out farmers from agriculture instead of training them to use better technology and high yielding seeds, are we not increasing chances of food shortage. Moreover in urban areas , there is not enough job opportunities that are well paying. How should a youth from the rural area be brought to urban area and be promised to earn more than what he earned back in his village. Also the costs of living in urban area are many folds of that in rural area.
@paharsinghmann2 жыл бұрын
Are you nuts! One hectare is almost 2.5 acres i.e. almost 20 kanaals. No family even with members up to 10 can consume the produce more than half acre(4 kanaals). Which means 4/5 th portion is still available for selling. Both MSP AND MINIMUM INCOME MUST BE IMPLEMENTED BY GOVERNMENT IF IT IS DONE WITH SELLING INDIA. But that doesn't seem to be the case

+sanket12345ful skill india, bridging the digital divide, building of tier 2,3 cities through modern urban models, financial inclusion, irrigation, electricity for farmers. Change is happening, slowly. you need to visit, travel around. ask locals about what they/ their father were doing in 1995 and now. especially in MP, Chattisgarh, Rajasthan, Guj and some other states. In India, we follow the constitutional model of middle path and incremental growth, so change takes time unlike China. If you look closely, everything is being done for farmers, especially the landless and marginalized and not just the rich ones of west UP, haryana and punjab. And I will say this - don't look for dark spots in a clear sky. this is perhaps the last chance for India.
