You are a part if a very large complex farming operation. There will be equipment broken at timed. Maybe a simple thought of don't open up a totally new to you field in the dark. Your Dad and papaw know this was a rare occurrence and won't happen again. Keep your head up, finish the season strong.

Last friday I run my new to me fresh rebuilt draper head into the ground crossing a washout in the dust. Dug into the dirt and had about 10 in of dirt (deep) on the draper belts. Bent the cutter bar we straightened it with blocks. Finished up the last 20 acres. Then got rained out. I know how you feel. Hit a stump on a property line back in the day also with a auger head. Good luck

Well, at least you have a parts machine now is what you can say... drapers, guards, sections, polys, hyd motors, etc. Shiz happens. Tipped an auger last year during corn harvest, but some of the usable parts have come in handy already.

Once you hit something big with a header they never run good after. Our was fixed but the canvas would not feed right so we had to get rid of it. It’s not worth trying to fix and keep it.

Neighbors can combine 7 quarters in a day 5 combines all together so that is not an option in Northern Alberta! We harvested about 60 acres this fall of new land was all bush in 2022. Daylight hours only cause of roots maybe a stump?? Swathed it first... canola for that reason!! Why a stump in a seeded field was it new land recently also!! Outside round right hand side of header.. NOPE... Rule of thumb... Ya always go counter clockwise around the field first pass cause of trees and power poles etc and yer unload auger...

I used to haul equipment in my 20s. I laid a nearly brand new track loader on its side while trying to square up on my low boy. It had 84 hours on the meter.. still had that new loader smell.. the man that signed my paycheck looked me in the eye and said "you gotta break eggs to make cake, get back to work." At the end of the day it could have been worse.

I can remember when one of the truck drivers (old IH 1600) backed into one of the JD combines sides. Bent the straw walkers and the machine was done for the season. First time I heard profanity out of the boss.

lol, Welkers have shown they bend easy.

11 MPH combining with the AF + that wide header.... and the "Stump Collision" RH side of header would be in Washington and the left in North Dakota! But No stumps in Shelby.. this year not even much for weeds ummm I mean stubble!!

Stump left in a field with a growing crop. You asked for that.
@joescheller66803 ай бұрын
Take out the canvas cut the cross braces lose and twist it back to where it should be. Then weld the cross angle braces back good to go. Thats what Welkers did worked like a charm.

Relax and operate the machine. Please give that technician some more time without uptime/downtime pressure. I salute him! Would have loved to have seen more of what he did. First of all the draper belts must be tracking which is a good sign.

@timwestendorf83034 ай бұрын
We done the same thing last fall. Dad caught the snout just wrong in a terrace and folded the head back. We had just rebuilt it. On top of all that, on the way back to the shop the header cart tongue caught part of the folded down snout turning off the highway and sent the header cart into a deep ditch flipping it over onto the bean head. Our insurance guy said it was like dropping the coffin on the way to the grave.... but all things considered insurance bought us a different header and nothing was hurt other than pride
@EvanC84 ай бұрын
A 200 grand mistake. Don’t feel bad my dad did a similar thing one night moving fields with the 45 foot header on and hit a tree in road gear. Yea he slowed down a bit. But the header was a right off. New Deere Draper. It was last year. This is whet happens when you rush. Things always go wrong.

@gavinperry72374 ай бұрын
Accidents unfortunately happen, insurance premiums are paid for that reason. The fact that header is new then insurance deductible should be the only major expense since depreciation should not be an issue. Availability of similar type of header as a replacement in a timely manner may however be an issue.

Bet u don't open up a field around the outside in the dark again. Always better to stay away from edge and come back and get it. That said as dry and dusty as it is this year...could of happened in broad daylight. Be glad nobody was hurt including yourself. Those are the days u will never forget. My grandfather was hit on a tractor by a drunk driver with no headlights. It broke the tractor in half, but my grandfather survived with a concussion and the loss of some teeth. Another accident involved a planter marker hitting my grandfather in the head....that one required stitches and we took rest of day off to count our blessings it wasn't worse. Farming is dangerous and u must respect the equipment. The bigger it gets the more danger that exists. Wear your seat belts at all times....eve though it seems stupid in the field.....it could save your life when u least expect it.
