Forage rye and hairy vetch is good option for cover crop when too late for brassica especially when going with a later crop in the spring like beet or maize.

Interesting to see the different people from around Europe react to new regulations, coming from an arable area in North Germany. Around our place it was quite common this year to spread rye (fodder rye from this year’s harvest) with a fertilizer spreader (100 kg/ ha) and to disc it in with the disc harrow as a „one pass“ sort of attempt. Fairly cost efficient. Spray off and deep harrowing next spring to have the ground ready for maize next spring. Good thing the Round Up ban didn’t go through as planed .Lot‘s of bio digesters in our area. About 50 % of land use for maize. Maize harvest finished here for quite a while. Keep it up Phil.👍🏻

Beans are nitrogen fix for the soil I think they would be a great cover crop

If only you could get crops to come on like weeds and ground keepers [ volunteers] life would be easier. Is the italian rye grass the same as the one that grew like mad in the 1980s ? I went mowing at a local farm who grew it and the tarrup 307 was lost in the stuff. The farmer had a gripe about the width of the swaths as he only had a 100hp and a little reco drag chopper. I had the doors on the mower set in tight too. Never seen grass like it.

Many years ago the dairy farm where my father milked used to put in ryegrass as a first bite for the cows in spring, undersown with other grasses they would strip feed it the throw on some nitrogen and cut for silage later on
@StanleyWareham
@StanleyWareham 4 сағат бұрын
Just as an add on to my other comment the biggest problem they had was if spring was wet the cows (they went out in the morning and still stayed in at night) would tread the field badly and they would end up ploughing in what was left

Yes it might, but it‘s only a cover crop. Though a bit of slurry might help. Especially of the crop is intended for grazing later on.
