I remember in the late 1940's when there was still threshing done, the straw was put in the cattle lot and the cattle would sort of mill around that straw pile which was very big. So you suggestion of putting the rice straw in the cattle lot is really an excellent idea. I am 81 so I still can remember going to my uncles farm during threshing season and watching that process and the straw pile that was generated was very big. Couple of months ago I visited my cousin, who is 10 years older than I, and he currently owns that farm and we had a discussion of where the straw pile was. So again, I think you putting the rice straw in the cattle lot is a very good idea and brings you back to where it was done in the farming process years ago. Welcome back to the past, ha.

I can already see those cattle salivating over the new bales. At least until they take their first bite. It's good to see the old Dodge finally pulling her weight. She did great. And I noticed that she came equipped with that patented Dodge 260 air conditioning. Two windows down and sixty miles per hour. Another excellent video, Tyler. Have a great one.

Rice straw used to be exclusive feed during our childhood. We had around 40-50 milk cows, 20-30 bulls for farm labour and an equal number of buffalos. We stored rice bales in our barn. This was around 50-55 years ago in India.

Looks as like a good plan I am thinking that the cows should work that straw into the wet clay much like the waterfowl work the rice straw into the fields for decomposition. Can’t beat something for free right next door. Most of our neighbors are now making roads in our Capay Adobe with orchard wood chips and walnut shells for getting the bee boxes out in the middle of February.

If you let those bales cure out a little they should be ok. I've had to bale hay a bit tough ahead of rain a few times. Most of the time they were fine. A few might get a little musty. Should be fine for bedding.

Somehow I came to your channel in Northern CA by way two channels. One called The Veggie Boys and another called A Stable Life. The Vegetable Farm and Boarding Stable are two arms of a fifth generation farm in the northeastern corner of PA. The Veggie boys also raise dairy calves for beef and chickens for eggs that they sell in their farm store along with their vegetables. The stable is home to 25 retired privately owned horses including three gentle giants and two miniature donkeys. I enjoy watching the similarities in the work you do and the work they do and the differences. I hope you are all able to maintain your family way of life. 👍🏻😊

Thats a great idea to help with the mud...and I think your right your going to wish you'd baled more of them. You'll want more than one between the feeder and high ground for sure...but I think I would have run the box scraper through where you talked about adding gravel because you usually pull everything up onto that high ground...although maybe you want to widen or make it a bit longer so they have even more high ground for space.

I remember feeding straw to cows (dairy cows, heifers and bulls) twenty-something years ago. I live in Northern Norway, and I don’t think anyone up here grows anything that gives straw as a biproduct, so I’m guessing the farmer for some reason got a load of cheap (enough) straw from Southern Norway or Sweden. 🤔 For the straw to have any nutritional value, it was treated with lye. I remember rolling out a bale, and a steam of lye rose up and stung my eyes. 😂 I’ve worked on several farms for many years, and that’s the only time I’ve come across feeding straw. Some use a little bit for bedding. - I love the attitude of utilizing what’s available, cheap and/or just a waste problem for others! 👌🏻🤩 Win-win!

I think you are going to wish you would just place a bale out as needed--wet, manure straw is not much different than mud, but a fresh bale for bedding once in a while is effective. I'd borrow a rake and make more bales and just store them outside out of the way until needed in the corral.
