Yeah we can’t wait to get some proper heat going through that side of the house, we’ve had the open fire going in the bedroom above since November and that has helped hugely, the heat coming off the wall going up the stairs is amazing and the range in the kitchen since the minute we moved in lol it really needed it because it was so damp in here to begin with. It is lovely in here now, no damp whatsoever which is lovely.

@thecornerhouseproject9 ай бұрын
Haha, good evening Clive, I bet you saw the word chimney, stuck the kettle on and settled for a good episode about FIRE hahahaha. Seriously though, we are thrilled that the flue liner went up so easily and now ready for a stove. The pointing may have to wait a little while as we can get the range quickly, but we can always move it out of the way if the liming doesn't get done immediately. There is so much work to do in each room I don't think anyone will notice lol. Sadly it will be a single door model but any number of doors will be better than the cold look of the old fireless fireplace. Thanks for watching and commenting and hopefully we will have fire for you soon. Have a nice evening Clive :-)

You guys really have it looking so good around there. I saw some people who have stinging nettles on their French Homestead and they make stinging nettle Pesto With the leaves and say it's very good. If you look on youtube, there's all kinds of recipes for stinging nettle pesto Like pesto with walnuts etc. Maybe you 2 can make some and see what it's like. So Great. You got your fireplace chimney tube up there and you'll be able to use it soon. Once you get a stove. That'll help keep it warmer in there for you. Then your little orange kitties can curl up near the fire. Seeing you walk the kitten on a harness, what's so cute. Some cats do fine with them and other cats. Just lay there flat and act like they're being killed. It really looks nice behind that 1. Burn where you leveled everything off and made it all cleaned up. Everything is looking so good around there. You guys are very hard workers and get things done. Dawn is an absolute working maniac and puts her whole heart and soul into everything.
@thecornerhouseproject9 ай бұрын
Hi Barbara, thank you for such a lovely lot of comments :-) The mower will be out tomorrow, hopefully that will help with the stinging nettles. Quite a few people have said about nettle soup, tea and other things. Pesto isn't something we would choose to make but please do have a go and see if it is as good as people say. There is a cheese from Cornwall (maybe Devon) called YARG. The family name is Gray, which backwards is Yarg. The wheels of cheese are wrapped in nettles and then go mouldy. You can still see the nettle leaf shapes. The cheese is lovely, but I am no sure if the nettles make any difference to it at all. The one cat loves being by the range, you can come down at any time of night and there she is. She will love a stove too. Hahahaha, that is so true with cats and leads, they don't mind or they HATE IT, GET IT OFF ME, WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS TO ME hahaha. A bit of work is still to be done up the top area and of course the hunt for the possible courtyard stones under where we are going to have as a raised area... or maybe where we are not having a raised area depending on what we find. Have a lovely evening Barbara and thank you :-)
@Brooklyn19-k3s5 ай бұрын
You need to burn the Ivy, brambles & nettles to avoid them taking root - which they will. Bonfire night would be a good time to get rid. You two are work horses. BTW Willow trees can be grown by ‘literally’ pushing a branch into the ground, it really does grow into a beautiful tree - I’ve done it. If you think a tree is dead but you really want to save it, give it seven years, if it’s not leafed in that time, then it’s dead - that info was given me by a Tree Surgeon. 🫶🏻xx

We were looking at the Stanley Oisin because we won’t need a back boiler as in time when we replace the range we will go for one with a back boiler on that for radiators in time. I really can't get over how much you two have done in a relatively short time - your back garden is looking loads better! Just a thought on your dead hedge - have a look into taking a few willow cuttings and plunging them into the ground in the dead hedge. Willow takes easily from cuttings and you'd soon (well, maybe a couple of years) have a live hedge springing up to fill the gaps along side the dead hedge. It'd be nice to see new hedges growing from cuttings from your old tree's, kinda like a rebirth :)

It's good to keep some of the plants like the raspberries and blackcurrants because whatever variety they are, they are absolutely suited to the soil type, soil quality, pest attacks, diseases and weather in your part of the woods. They're bound to be an older variety. Your fruit trees probably are too. The newer types of currants probably have fatter fruit, but I bet yours taste better. Old varieties are worth their weight in gold. There's nothing worse than buying a plant that just doesn't like the conditions in your garden. And as for your fireplace. I was born in a house that was built in 1884/. A two up two down terrace there was a tiny front room for visitors then the 'same sized room which we called the kitchen. It had a small, black, cast iron range with a side oven, I remember my gran cooking a joint of lamb in it. I can still hear it sizzling and the smell of it.- That was where you cooked, and leading off the kitchen at the back of the house was the scullery which had a stone sink and a cold tap. That was where you did your prep and washing up.

A bit of TLC and hopefully we will have some fruit, no matter how small or old, I am sure they will be lovely. It is lovely to hear about people and how they lived. It is sometimes hard to really imagine living that way anymore with everything we have available today. I think my mum and dad had a 2 up 2 down mid terrace, I don't know the age of it though. It is amazing how people just got on with it as that is all they knew. Thank you again Diane, have a lovely evening :-)

Well we have never heard of Chimney Swifts before, so I had a Google..... "Chimney Swifts are among the most aerial of birds, flying almost constantly except when roosting overnight and nesting. When they do come to rest, they never sit on perches like most birds. Their long claws are suited only for clinging to the walls of chimneys and other vertical surfaces." So I am guessing they don't like stainless steel tubing with a bird cowl on the top. I understand why he doesn't want a liner doing. Thank you for that, a new bird for our list :-)

Burner browsing has begun! 😍 🤣 yes I know what you mean with the harness….when I was a kid there was an old lady who lived in a bungalow at the end of our road and she used to sit out on a chair by her front door with her cat on a lead and then she’d wander around the grassed area with the cat on the lead! We all thought she was an eccentric crazy cat lady too! It’s stuck in my mind all these years later! Alan was showing off on the video as he isn’t normally that good! I reckon a wood burner is a great plan. I'm heating my semi-detatched ex-Council estate bungalow entirely on wood. Get ilogs prepared right and they'll burn clean and hot with very little smoke. You may not need to burn coal-derived 'smokeless' fuel at all. Coal is sequestered carbon, like gas, oil and (arguably) peat, so by burning it you are increasing atmospheric CO2 whereas by burning wood, you are just speeding natural carbon cycling. With less pollutants. You have plenty of firewood, including lots of ash (the best), quite a bit of which will have ash dieback. I drove from Rosslare to Mulroy and back a week later in 2022 and it was everywhere and more trees effected than not. Though trees cycle down and die due to the disease, the firewood is fine. But dead ash is very brittle, so effected trees are best felled while still showing signs of life. Effected trees are a headache to climb and sectional fell due to the brittleness, and that's expensive even for 'simple' (un-diseased) trees. Most of the big trees on your boundaries seem to be ash. That one by your dead hedge site is an ancient hedgerow tree, so if it has (or gets) ash dieback, that will be very sad. For more on hedgerow trees, I invite you to take 10 mins to look at this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pGXOcn6kn7Crp5I The ash is half way through. Yours has much bigger stems, but its history is similar. When considering your wood burner, I would advise that you get a bigger one than the size of the room 'calls for'. You can always shut it down low once it's running, open doors and position passive fans to move warm air. A big one will take bigger logs and stay 'in' over night, requiring less tending. You can get one with a back boiler and run rads or hot water (or both) off it. If you step it out into the room, you get better room heating efficiency and the space for perhaps installing a worm around the lower flue to heat water (whether or not you have a back boiler). You can do this whilst keeping the old fireplace as a feature although the orthodox path would be to sit the wood burner in the old fireplace. If you run rads, you can keep your central heating boiler If you have one) or night storage heaters for background warming if you're away for a while whilst heating rooms away from the wood burner. You're lucky because your chimney is inside the house. Hopefully, with a house that age, the chimney will be a big mass of masonry that will act as a big storage heater, releasing warmth gradually once the flue warms it. And heat the rooms above and next to it. Hope this is useful, good luck.

Wow! Thank you so much for taking the time to write all of that out for us! I will have a look at the KZbin link you posted there, so thank you for that. I would say 90%of our ash trees are affected, unfortunately. It is something we will look at with the trees. We absolutely love your advice with the wood burner and going for a higher kw than is recommended, that makes perfect sense reading what you wrote, so thank you for that too. We do plan on getting a range for the kitchen that will be capable of doing radiators and hot water at some point in the future. We have an open fire in one of the bedrooms upstairs and that is lit everyday and like you say it warms the stones a treat in the hallway and stairwell. We’re looking forward to getting a wood burner going in the living room to finally feel some proper heat on that side of the house. Thanks again for taking the time to give us all of the advice that you, it is very much appreciated and yes it is very useful. Thank you ☺️

Be great to get some serious heat in the house. We had a villager Berkley boiler stove in our bungalow when we lived in County Kerry for 2.5 years. Ran the 5 rads, towel rail and hot water off its 7.6kw wraparound boiler burning logs and supertherm. 2 bed Bungalow fully renovated and well insulated and exempt from BER report as derelict. When we sold in 2012, new energy rating a D2. Live on a narrowboat in the UK and have a woodwarm fireview 4.5kw stove. Amazing quality and stays in well. Much better quality and control than the villager.
@thecornerhouseproject9 ай бұрын
From a bungalow to a narrow boat, that sounds a bit of a change. Where do you moor up normally? I am from the Midlands originally and there are loads of canals around there and some lovely marinas. These stoves with the back boilers are incredible and we will be going with a range with back boiler keeping the water the kitchen side of the house. The people we know around here all have back boilers, it seems to be a standard living in rural areas from what I can tell. We are looking forward to the heat output as just the Calor gas heater at 3.4kw soon warms the room, but drinks the gas really quickly and gets expensive. Thanks for the info on the stoves you had / use. Have a nice evening :-)

Plumbed in a Rayburn 355 solid fuel range while I was in Ireland, plumbed in the whole heating system , around 8 radiators and client so happy. Alarming how much coal it needed to fill the firebox. At least a scuttle, but heated the property well. Old stone house with interior planked stud interior walls. Very original. Warmsler cookers are apparently better than Rayburn. I think it would be a shame to use herbicide on organic ground. Your raspberries will put up new shoots from the roots also if you bend them over and bury the tip in soil they will root.
@j.c40079 ай бұрын
Exactly !!! No herbicide !!
@joesture99919 ай бұрын
For further clarification on herbicides. Both the RHS and Organic Society recognise that land that as been allowed to establish an heavy infestation of rhizome weeds it can be best practice to utilise specific herbicides to restore the soil structure, these are very targeted herbicides used for the short term only. This also follows on the principals of a zero cultivation or zero till as preferred technique for organic small holdings, where as the alternative management of nettles and other invasive plants is to dig the soil and to sieve the soil to maximise the removal of the rhizomes (other wise it will just return). Additionally, it is recognised by the Organic Growing Society and the National Farmers Union that a transition to a organic farm over a three to five year period requires a multi strand restoration cycle. This is why I suggested to Dawn and Ben about the annualised spray of core source elements including seaweed. Then to get the structure of the soil more self-defensive, against invasive plants, is the important role of a specific paddock seed mix. Further as Ben stated the next organic management technique is the regular mowing and mulching as that will dramatically weaken any unplanned plant growth. Finally there is the stage of annualised soil sampling with chemical analysis. This will then advise Ben Dawn to what core elements are required e.g. typically routine years 2 and 3 for a need to have a lime or ammonia mix from organic sources. Hope that clarifies.

You could do it now if they are easy to bend. Raspberries produce every second year you have to clean out the dead canes in the spring. The ones that came up from the roots last year will produce this year. I planted mine in rows with a post at the ends with a piece of 2x4 and put wire from one end to the other and back .This keeps the canes upright and makes it easier to pick and clean out dead canes. Also put a heavy mulch between the rows to keep down weeds.

Good morning Karen We would rather they aren't on harnesses too and it won't be long until they are off. But about 3 minutes after this little bit was filmed, the dog from the next house, who is free 24 hours a day decided he would come tearing into this area and start barking at Dawn and Alan. There are very few dogs kept on leads in this area, some small and some huge ones, so until we get a gated area at the sides of the house for a safe space for the cats, we though it much kinder to walk them with a harness until they are street savvy because, they lived in a shed before we got them and were never let out. One day they will have all the land they want to roam whenever they choose. Thanks for your comment.
