Kitchen Renovation Reveal | 100 year old Victorian renovation in an Irish Farmhouse

For the first time in this 100 year old farmhouse's history, The Corner House, we not only introduce a modern kitchen, but this is the first time this Irish farmhouse has ever had a kitchen! The room is a kitchen by default because it is where the old Stanley 8 range is and it was where the children remember cooking and eating.... actually, everything took place in this kitchen as the parlour was out of bounds, as most Irish Parlours were.
A kitchen work top, two corner cabinets, a larder unit, and a kitchen sink makes this room finally look like and feel like a kitchen. Granted there is still a sofa bed in it for now, but don't they all have a sofa bed? No, just us then.
We have now added a worktop cooker, a hot plate, and the washing machine and tumble dryer no longer look out of place either under the DIY work bench Dawn made.
Join us as we bring the old farmhouse in Ireland into the present day with just a simple install of a basic kitchen. Now we have somewhere to prepare and cook food which will eventually be grown on the homestead....... one day!

Wow, isn't it amazing what the Universe provides when we need it. You guys will no doubt find your surroundings in the kitchen far less chaotic now that you have cabinets. Dawn has an amazing ability to tidy anything up and find a place for anything and if there isn't a place, she makes one. We already had little wore shelves for inside cupboards so they have already been put to good use. She is great, I always know where to find something when Dawn has been sorting stuff out. It is amazing, there was no reason what so ever as to why she mentioned the kitchen that morning but she did and we are delighted with it. What's more, Peter loaded it into his large van and brought it down too. We are so so lucky with the people around us. We do think that if we had chosen any other house our of the 7 we looked at, we would on our own as outsiders. Here we have amazing people who come and check in on us, it is incredible. The video with the joists in the living room was lovely to edit as it just showed hours of us doing what we do and how we work together. We are over the moon with the kitchen. Like we said, it just instantly transformed the room into a "real" kitchen room. Just to be able to have the washing up bowl in the sink instead of up on the work bench was lovely.... we couldn't empty it, but we could wash up in it haha. I like the temporary kitchen. How wonderful that a neighbor has an old kitchen set and it just fits. We put in a whole kitchen ourselves 20+ years ago and it’s tough getting the measurements right, and this one for you fits that side perfectly. We couldn't believe it when we popped round to see it. We had already said we didn't need to see it as any cupboard will be great. To see a full kitchen sat there was amazing. This is it. We no longer need to worry about what to do for a kitchen for a bit and as a little spoiler, water and waste is now connected and the washing machine all plumbed in. It was amazing John to to see it when we popped round to see a few units. A little spoiler, we are hoping tomorrow the kitchen / diner will be exactly that as we should be sleeping upstairs for the first time in our bedroom. So please keep your fingers crossed that it all goes to plan. It was instant "now that is a kitchen" moment. We love it and now we have a table top cooker and electric hob, we have done away with the camping stove, so it all looks lovely. Dawn and Ben...we are planning a project like yours. Moving from NYC to rural Massachusetts. Not a different country but probably the same number of miles away I bet. It is an old, neglected but timelessly beautiful house that should be preserved and loved and lived in. We learn when you and Ben discuss how to think around a problem and then solve it. The work on the land and the structure...the joists project alone gave us so much information. As Morrissey sings "if you don't like me then don't look at me, there must be someone who can take your gaze away." Clare from West Coast Wanderer was criticized in the last video as well. So Dawn you're in good company. Maybe there are people who don't like women appearing knowledgeable and capable. Please just keep doing what you're doing, the way you do it. You're going to have the house of your dreams in a place where neighbors are real neighbors, as my Irish born mother would say. The temporary kitchen looks amazing. Our inspiration came from Dan from escape to rural France for the joists, he was the only person on KZbin I came across, before we moved over to start, that was doing what we wanted to do with the joists. So, to know that we have now become people that others learn from is mind blowing to us as we’re just winging it most of the time! Oh I know, we watch west cork wander too and felt so bad for Clare when Rob said that about their comments and Ben was editing our video at the same as hearing Rob say about Clare which was really strange. We love them too, and are in awe of what they have achieved this year by themselves! Oh a stove, that would be a fantastic present to turn up. We can't see it happening though. With that said, we would have never dreamed we would have been given a kitchen, but there it is. And yes, what a perfect fit. Dawn has had a move around over Christmas to streamline the kitchen better and it is all working well. Our Corner house really is now a home. One last job though is to get the bloody shower inside. I am close, but it isn't quite there yet. Soon. Have a lovely new year :-)

Oh you really do! Even now with the water, because we are rain harvesting, we have learnt to be very aware of turning a tap on and not letting it run too long like you would before. It was a lovely moment though to have hot water coming out of a tap and being able to empty a washing up bowl of water down the sink!

Our neighbours are incredible in all different ways, but they have all taken us under their wings to look after us and have made us feel so so welcome. No, you are 100% right with lining up the top unit with the bottom one. There is a reason we didn't and I am now trying to remember why....... ........ thinking.......... .... asking Dawn if she can remember......... Thanks Colette. The previous owner really took care of it all, there is hardly a mark on the sink unit and not a scratch on the doors. We have bought things from Argos in worse condition lol. The timing is perfect as now we also have a worktop cooker and hob. We were starting to wonder if Christmas dinner was going to be beans on toast and a tin of custard for pudding, but now the meat is ordered ready for Monday. It’s great isn’t it? It has a veneer on it, I would guess it’s mdf or similar below rather than pine, but I’ve seen people use things like Frenchic paint to transform all sorts, so it could work on this too

Oh my goodness, we have been so completely overwhelmed with how bloody lovely the people are around here, just everywhere we have been to be fair, but especially the people we have met around where we live! We have no idea how we are going to design this place, but we have snippets of ideas here and there and now we have the big things out of the way, let the fun begin planning how it will all work! We have just got a worktop oven and a 2 ring hob so have moved away from the gas stove now, which is great. It won't be long until you are in and you will be as chuffed as we are now we have a kitchen. (Spoiler... hopefully in our own bedroom tomorrow night too and not the kitchen) Again, won't be long until you are there. Keep going the pair of you :)

I watch both channels and wouldn't miss either one of you, I love the fact that you mention The corner house project when you were doing the roof that Dawn and Ben were dubious about tackling. Time lapse or banter and chat you are all amazing at what you are sharing with us, after all if people don't like it they can always turn the sound down just ignore the negative comments. We worry a little bit but although it sounds silly, but it is easier to do videos and ask questions or give updates the same day or week. Being behind means we have to hide things, like when we did another video, we had to try and hide the kitchen behind us. But we are catching up, so each video will be the same day or week. I think the other channel you speak of is West Cork Wander, they are uploading quickly like us to try and catch up for the same reason of it being easier to show current stuff and share it at the same time as doing it. We are over the moon with it, we had no idea it was a complete kitchen. One of our dated kitchens in the past we used Fablon and in the caravan we talk about now and then we used DC Fix, both sticky back plastic with a colour or patten on. Aww we have been overwhelmed with just how lovely everyone has been around here! I would think with the house having been empty for so long that it’s nice to see life back in and around it again. It was once a vibrant and busy household that suddenly went quiet for so long. Well what I say on camera is a little different to what I really say off camera, a bit like what you would say hahaha, but yes, a banned account at nearly 3k subscribers wouldn't be good, so I behave myself. It is a huge job and we are proud we had the courage to do it and would recommend it to anyone who is thinking about it but isn't sure. Jump and go for it. Yes, first Christmas here. Very different to normal. We have sent amazon parcels to our families in England with xmas at the end of their names and we have the same under the tree here... on the concrete floor lol We are hoping, and don't tell anyone, that we will be able to have a film on on netflix Christmas day in the living room. Hi Ron. The kitchen is great, it just fit straight in, we are very lucky. The wiring as it is was the quickest and cheapest way. It will still be exposed but in probably black conduit. It is unlikely we will recess it. The switches will probably be replaced in the future too. Thank you for watching and commenting :-)

What a brilliant way to end 2023 to have a pseudo kitchen and with the bed up you can have a proper sit down xmas meal and a chance to reflect on an amazing journey with so much achieved with your own fair hands. Quick note on the oven can you not replace the seals? Think they be rope type on that

Unfortunately it is too far gone really….Ben changed all the ropes and it did help a little but the basic structure is too blown and bent to plug every gap. In the new year when it’s not so chilly we will look at getting a range with a boiler for hot water and rads…just not brave enough at present to take it out, run into problems and have no heat for the winter.🥶

It is really nice to know that people weren't put off by our very first walk around, the camera was bloody terrible. Santa may bring us a new camera if we are lucky, we will see. Dawn is soo funny, she doesn't think she is but I am very often laughing. I love her to bits.
