Great work and I love how it turned out. One recommendation I would share for the poster or anyone building this is to alternate the grain when assembling the top. If you look at the ends you have a u shape in the grain and it is best to alternate those up, down, up, etc. As the wood takes on and gives up moisture those boards could possibly cup. If they all face the same direction that is very much exaggerated and the top could end up with a significant cup up or down. Yes, a 2x4 is pretty thick and narrow but someone could attempt a top with 1x6 and there is a good possibility for issues over time with thinner, wider boards. Just a small tip for longevity.

I like how you decorated the lip at 10:41. In most cases, that will not be an issue, but if the top is being used for a table or desk where someone sits and rests their arms, the sharp corners may not feel good on their arms. My current computer desk has 90 degree edges and It's always causing pain and leaving marks on my arms. I'm designing a new desk where I will trim it with hardwood and round over the corners with a router. This might not be an issue with your table for your purpose, but it may for others. Thank you for your videos, I'm loving them.

Pro tip...You can just use water as the wood conditioner. It opens the grain just like the wood conditioner. Just take a sponge and wipe on the water, squeeze the water out of the sponge and wipe of the excess water. Let it dry then stain. I do hardwood floors and this is a process we use to achieve an even stain color. Especially on wood that stains splotchy like Pine, Birch or Maple.

Good work. My only advice is regarding the wood conditioner. I used to think the same thing about application time. Turns out that what the directions really mean about the 15 to 20 minutes, is that is the working time. Your stain is supposed to be applied within that window. Obviously you don't want to completely soak with conditioner. Just wipe it on quickly. Then the stain within that 15 to 20 minute window. The conditioner opens up them pores so the wood will take the stain evenly. When the conditioner has dried, it ceases to open up them pores. So adding stain after the conditioner dries, its not going to take it evenly.
@731Woodworks5 жыл бұрын
I have read the conditioner actually seals the pours so the stain doesn’t soak in as much, which prevents the blotching.
@robbrown395 жыл бұрын
@@731Woodworks hmm. Well I wasnt trying to mislead you.. That's the same conditioner I use. The directions say to stain anytime within that window. But honestly, it's really not that important. Your tables came out awesome.
@731Woodworks5 жыл бұрын
@@robbrown39 On no sir, I know you weren't trying to mislead me. I'm sorry if it came out that way. I think there is always a lot of differing opinions on those kind of things, it's hard to know what the right way is. I'll try it the way you described next time I use it and see if it makes a noticeable difference.
@robbrown395 жыл бұрын
@@731Woodworks I did some more research on it and your way is closer than my way to the right way. It's true that you dont want to wait too long to stain, but it's also true that you have to give the conditioner time soak in. The window of opportunity is more like 2 hours.

Living in South Africa, and loving the way you guys in the US do woodcrafts - I always have this HUGE stumbling block: I need to work out in my head the inches and fractions of inches - into decimal. That takes up half of my project time! One inch, is 2,54 centimetres, or - using the logic of ten - 25,4 milimetres. That I can cope with. But the minute you guys start talking in fractions of inches - I need to ask : WHY? You are such a great nation - except you haven't embraced the logic of ten! ;) Example: 28 1/8 inches , equals 0. 714375 meters, or 71.4375 centimeters, or 714.375 millimeters, or 714375 micrometers OR - just keep on dividing by ten - you see the pattern? MUCH easier if your base is 1 and 0. With commas, As you go into fractions... Come on, guys....I know you hate the french - but enough is enough. :)

I'm very late but anyway. How can the legs be 2x4 but you are saying 3 1/2 and 1 1/2 on either side when attaching aprons? Also the top is 2x4 by 8 so it will be 32 but you are saying 28. So is a 2x4 in USA a 1 1/2x3 1/2?

Yep, in the USA a 2x4 is 1.5x3.5. It wasn't always that way, and I won't pretend to be an expert, but a mix of standardizations and lumber shortages after World War I led to lumber's actual size being smaller than it's nominal size. In short, suppliers had to stretch their stock to not only make it last but keep it cheap and competitive vs other materials. The nominal sized name stuck, even though the actual size is smaller.

Yes, sometimes I use pocket hole plugs or cut dowels to fit.

Awesome build man! Could you detail the bit used for the table top edges?
@731Woodworks4 жыл бұрын
It's just an 1/8" round over bit

Did you trim the rounded edges off of the 2x4s . they look like they are squared off.
@731Woodworks4 жыл бұрын
