Nope, not to hit a horse on the butt with. It was to hold your "black powder " (better known as gun powder) for a flint lock rifle. You would take it hunting, that's why there is a picture of a hunting dog on the side of it. The little round hinged box could have been for holding the round lead balls, or "shot" for the same type of rifle. Not sure about that one. If it was, the size of the round container would mean it was for a small bore gun. Equivalent to a 22 now days. The thing that looked like a lighter was for holding stick matches and the buckles could have originally been from women's or children's shoes. When shoes wore out buckles would get reused for dog collars or other things. Great finds!

The snuff box is really a patch box. It would have been fitted into the gun stock of a black powder rifle. The gun was loaded in the barrel. Powder, patch and ball.

Another Great Video. Love the Door Handles. Please take another video of them when they get Cleaned. They are so pretty. Are you going to trim around the Dog headstones and clean them? The part that you refer to as the side of the house with the big porch.....I really think it is the actual Front. I know it faces the pond in the front but that's how people built their homes back in the 1800s. They wanted to sit out on their porch with their rocking chairs and look out at the pond.

That thing with the dog on it is not for batting a horse. It is a style of powder horn for a black powder rifle. Also the tin may have been for percussion caps.

The little boomerang shaped metal thing with the little spikes on it looks like a shoe tap. People used to put them on the heels of their shoes to make the heels last longer. They also put them on tap shoes for tap dancing.

@H No Nope it was brought over from Ireland, started as Irish step, then country stepping (hill dancing), from there the blacks help move the evolution into the tap we know today. As for the addition of the tap onto the shoes, maybe you've hit onto something.

Just an FYI.... You can clean up a lot of the rusty items by soaking them in white vinegar. It is the gentlest way to remove rust without compromising the metal. It also works well on anything that has lime scale buildup (if your well has high lime content). I have cleaned up antique tools this way. Note: if you have the ability to take the items apart before soaking that would be best, especially with the antique door parts. After soaking use a copper brush to clean the item. Make sure to thoroughly rinse with clear, clean water to stop any acidic reactions.

Tracy McLaughlin Holmes, I used hot water and ammonia (with gloves and good ventilation of course). Let things soak for a bit and you’d be surprised how clean things become. I had a bunch of old glass from my aunt’s house that was destined for the dumpster and I cleaned it up and it now is in my china cabinet.

Aw, the dog headstones. She really loved them because those were pretty expensive, and a lot larger than I thought they'd be. As for the holes in the barn, I don't think those were groundhogs (although, it's hard to say for sure from just the video), I think they were probably drainage holes for the urine. I've seen pipes or ditches like that in other old barns, especially ones where a lot of animals were kept over a long period of time. They would do this because if their feet can't dry out then the hooves will become soft, infected and start to rot away. Not to mention the build up of ammonia and methane inside a building could make the animals and people sick or become lethal in extreme cases. The barn has lots of ways for air to move now, but it didn't when it was new. You might want to scrape all those wasp and bird nests down while it's still winter too. The buckles might have also been used for spurs. Any interest in selling those old locks?

You need to save most of the barrels & tea pots for planters on the porch and other places. You should then have an estate sale. Whatever is left incorporate into the farmhouse for decor. I'm sure you can paint stuff yourself to do this. Don't throw anything away or give away anything until the sale. Good luck, if I was there, I would buy a load of stuff from you.🌹

2:00 Stairs remark. Consider this: stairs don't always have to be straight. You can put a landing and turn in them 2/3 - 3/4 of the way down.
@LifeofLauraVideos
@LifeofLauraVideos 5 жыл бұрын
Yes! That was my first thought... of how can we make this work without cutting the floor. But with the cellar floor being pretty low, just over 6 feet tall. A landing would turn you right into an even lower ceiling, probably less than 5 feet tall. So you’d have to duck or bang your head. Luckily there’s plenty of space to bring that doorway back without interfering with the main entrance to the back wing.

Neat!/It looks like there is empty space between the wall on the left where the water pump is & the actual outside wall, wonder what's in there??????or if there is anything behind those bricks????

Your piece labeled 2-1/2 pounds is a leather powder flask. There are similar ones to it I found doing a search on 2-1/2 pound powder horn with dog on google.

The black powder horn, primers, and looks to be a possible military button might be the remains of the wars you and I spoke about once? Also those door knobs!!!! Ugh!! Those are my favorite. Remember in my video I pointed one out on our house and said out of all of it that was my favorite? Lol. Shine them up they are like looking into the universe to me. I’ve studied ours more than I should ever admit. Lol. Also those door lock boxes probably have a date stamped right on them. Ours say 1866. Plus the round tin and tall narrow tin might be tobacco and match containers maybe? But that’s my guess. Favorite video so far. I swear it’s like we have the same house. Even the manure spreader. It’s the same. Crazy. I hope you metal detect out there. If you do please make a video.

The one object that you held up looks like a gunpowder holder. It measured out the powder into the gun. If so, it is worth quite a bit of money. Take it to a gunsmith to make positive identification.

As an Australian, barns spark my curiosity. our weather is too hot/mild for our farm animals to need such a building. horses will generally have stables but all the ones I know of the period of your house were made of stone or brick as it cools better. We generally kept our farming equipment in lots of little sheds or under open air shelters with no walls so I've never actually seen a proper barn. also we use corrugated sheet metal on house roofs which you Americans don't seem to do, you like flat joined sheetsm

Interesting!! I love the look of stone stuff but I think by the late 1800s here people were getting away from it and doing brick or wood.

+Life of Laura generally yes. Wood and sheet metal became more popular once house paint became affordable. Wood was of course cheaper then stone to build with so you could make a bigger building with it.

Those old door locks and handles are worth about $50 each if complete! That is an old powder horn (with the dog on it) for a black powder rifle. The round brass tin most likely heals shot for the black powder rifle. The small oval box with the eagle is from post the civil war and I believe held stick matches. As for the button with the eagle I believe it is from the Civil War. Those buckles were most likely from clothing and or horse tack.

You could make some kind of cool art out of all those little metal pieces, I made Bird houses, and nailed old pieces like that from my uncle's junk, and gave it to them

I saw suspender clips and I think I saw a thing that holds black powder, for a musket. Some great historic items, if only they could talk. I have found some of the same things while metal detecting. It's amazing.
