Kip, no one handles the rain better than the dairy farmer... probably because you have to. Good video and I'm sure your dad has said, never complain about rain because it's better to have too much than not enough.

I believe that piling your corn silage whether just on the ground or building a bunk is the way to go. Silos are nice but as you have shared there is a lot of work and maintenance on the unloaders! Most of the dairy farms out in my area (PA) that milk 200 or more have gone with silage bunkers! 👍😎

Tim from Canada I think I have mentioned this once before.. if you have water that is in your barn or in an area you want to get rid of. can you have a manure spreader?.. you can put water in your spreader and discharge it the same way as you would your manure.. if you have the water in your spreader, you can take it out to the field and just charge it that way or you can put it on a lawn that is close to you, but in theory you can put water in your spreader, if you have a leak somewhere or it is just too much water in one area and you want to get rid of it. This will work.❤❤❤❤

One could find cheap used silos everywhere, but bunkers would be my thought based on your comments. There is nothing wrong with ag bags, silos, trenches, each are tried and true methods of storing crops. Each have their own conditions they will work best for. It's easy for us arm chair farmers to lend our advice but there is way to much we don't know to offer much more than a suggestion. You are lucky you are getting rain. On the other side of lake Michigan we are in serious trouble with projected yield numbers. I fear many the ever dwindling number of small farms is going to really get bad before spring. Btw, thank God it's not coming as snow!

Well you need to do what fit your operation. I now of a farm that had bunkers and when to bags. Did have the help to get bunkers full and covered. A bunker or pile needs to get filled without stopping. Then it doesn't matter if it a bunker or a pile or a silage bag you need a solid base to put it on. A pile will be a bigger mess in the mud. If you put bags there again it might be a good idea to put a surface drain in to the tile line. The water doesn't soak in throw packed ground. Hope you can come up with what works with out sending a lot of $$$$. And yeah I now how bag work in mud not always fun but there's not a affordable alternative nether.

Thanks for another great video. It was interesting and enjoyable. Wow wow. You have got a lot of rain and a lot of water on the ground. Water everywhere Kip. Kind of unusual for this time of the year. You were asking about storing your silage. I would get rid of the bags and go with nice big bunkers for your silage. We had bunkers and were happy with them. Easy to fill and maintain. You have space back there and I think you would be happy with them once you have them setup. Those milk trucks that come to your place have tons of wheels under them. Think I saw five sets of wheels under the tanks. Trust that is to meet weight requirements. Right????? Messy trying to work your manure in this rain. Wow. Lucky you are not stuck in the fields. Lots of wood piled up for your winter heat. Huge pile by your deck. Nice wood. Your deck looks nice Kip. Nice work. Some of your cows were checking out your wood pile in the video. Not harder than trying to farm in the mud. Hang in there. About it I guess. Thanks for everything Kip. Stay dry. The Iowa Farm Boy. Steve.

Natural compaction, way smaller footprint for runoff. Depends on labor situation. It’s obvious they have several tractors big enough to pack a bunk/pad, but do they have enough labor to be able to do it, along with everything else they have to do daily. If it was me, and it would just be for silage, I’d do a poured silo that can hold twice as much as one they have now. Theres a few people in my area that have 30x130’s for corn silage, and I’ve even heard of a 30x148, holds over 4000 tons of corn silage.

I think you would be better with a big silo like a 24x80 or 90. Switching to a pad not only do you loose the space but having to get rear unload wagons is another big expense. Not to mention the man power piles take.
@leevanruler119
@leevanruler119 Жыл бұрын
Weather permitting, you should transfer the ag bags contents to an available empty silo to alleviate the reloading of the wagon. Inclement weather would still allow you to feed without the added tractor/wagon refill.

Pads work great as long as you have the means and labor to be able to pack it efficiently. I know several dairies that are about your size that are going back to silos because they can’t find enough help to handle a bunker at fill time. And the silos I’m talking are 30x130. I think I’ve even heard of a 30x142 somewhere in Maryland or Virginia?? Takes some ponies to fill, and be a bugger if the unloader ever broke after filling.

The drive over piles are way easier. We started with front unload wagons when we switched. You could use your backhoe to push up on piles and pack with a articulate tractor. If you have close to or over 100 cows silos are to much work. You can use the pads for equipment parking when you don't have feed on it.
