One set compost tank can handle about 10tons fresh chicken manure every day(moisture content:60%-70%) and from the 8th day on, will discharge 3-4tons high quality organic fertilizer every day(moisture content: about 30%)

What did you learn from this blogger? This man is losing money big way on farming. Without income from KZbin he would packed it up long time ago. He is great talker/blogger, but his farming is nothing. In my estimate he may be earning about 1000$ a day from the KZbin. There are far better web sites if you want to learn about farming.

Hi Doc. Eagerly awaiting the results of how you get on with this experiment. I did this with my layers. I started free ranging them for 4/5 hours a day. I’m now only using 30% of the feed I used to use. Egg production has not decreased. In fact yolks are deeper orange in colour from them eating more greens. Hens seem happier also. Nice Doc ! I do the same here, free range and veggies, compost food scrapes. And I use 0 commercial feed for 5000 broilers. They love free ranging and don’t even pay me any attention. That’s when you know it’s working. When they leave you alone, they not hungry and they very happy

The cheapest way we grind and mix it here in Thailand is banana tree trunk and very little rice. It works for for both chicken and ducks and the production is amazingly higher than commercial chicken feed. If I don't find another video about it, maybe I'll make an instruction video

If the feed companies did not exist until maybe 200 years ago or less then how did the chickens eat? The chicken came before the feed companies. Yah gave each chicken the knowledge to forage for food. The chicken crossed the road for food not to be fed by a feed company. Love the video.

@@ritabeitz9598 my chickens free range I just open The Coop and let them free in the morning and then they put themselves up and I'll close it sometime that evening the ducks kind of a party animal so it will hang out but I have two pitbulls that are outside frequently during the day and then I am outside during the day quite a bit... Really having them good places to run under like I keep several places for them to be able to run over and hide under... Keep a slingshot around for the Hawks because most areas it's illegal to kill them so you just want to shew them away in kind of an aggressive manner... Where I'm at luckily hasn't had much foot traffic predators we had a dog run in the yard once before I got the fences completely up but it did not hurt the chickens but only scared them and then there was a raccoon for a very short time trying to move in in the woods next door but a few traps got rid of him... Always recommend if you're going to relocate a raccoon try to do it across water cross a bridge or something of that effect otherwise for certain take it a good distance and when you let it out it might be excited but most of the time they just want to get away... I will say having a dog that hangs out with them is probably your a number one deterrent and get a secure coop for them to sleep in and that should be the real extent of any real problems

Hey I'm out in Hawaii and I homestead a bit. Starting compost piles are an effective way to feed chickens without having to spend money. They can produce a lot of bugs for chickens and it can be sold as enriched soil later or used to grow food on the farm to produce vegetables, feed, and produce more compost. I just started doing in for about 2 years and cut my feed use by 75%. They eat all that I grow and spend the day shifting through the compost. I grow bananas, papayas, and several varieties of vegetables. So far very good results. Getting to 100% will be easier if I was retired and was in better health.

It's about getting local materials for very cheap and handle them. Ex. edible Leaves (papaya, casava, vegatables, moringga, etc.) A way is to dry them out of the sun, them crumble them. Cooking stuffs, left overs, leaves, banana skins, etc. Left overs from industries, coconut, rice husks. You have to think about the protein, energy, Vit content. And mix it with the usual stuff.

Thank you for all that you are doing. I have been doing something similar to reduce my feed costs. I aligned with a local pantry to take the food that is no longer good for human consumption, and feed it to my flock. They don’t eat everything, they are selective, and what they don’t eat right away will compost, and they will eat this composting food and all the insects that it brings. Spoiler alert, this is a lot of work to haul the food, but it is still far cheaper to do this than to feed straight chicken feed. Since I have been doing this, 3 years running, my birds are doing very well. It is a win win for my homestead. It will take some research to find pantries that will cooperate with you in this endeavor, but worth the time and effort. God bless you. Keep making these informative videos. My wife comes from a small village on a small Island in a mangrove in the Philippines. The food garbage in collected from each house daily and boiled and fed to the pigs they are raising for fiesta. Then what the pigs do not eat and other plant matter are buried and covered with coconut leaves to keep the soil moist. This is where the chicken eat digging up worms and bugs. And in the evening they grind up some cassava and call the chicken back to their coop to keep them safe. This is what I saw as I stayed there for three months. The chickens also ate bugs under the trees or huts.

Hi Doc, I live in a very dry and hot area of the US. I have started to ferment my feed which has drastically reduced my feed cost as well as increased the overall health of my birds. My egg production has remained stable during the hot months. It's quite simple and just mix your feed in a container with some water and let ferment for three days. I stir once a day and on day three drain off the water and my birds love it. I have reduced my feed by over 40%.

Love your videos! Stay at home mom here in the US just getting started with homesteading. I've gleaned a lot of info from your videos on how to care for our 20 chickens more efficiently. I love the idea of growing your own chicken feed. Can't wait to see how you do and learn from your experiences. I've also been watching another homesteader here in the US, (i think her KZbin channel is called Chickenlandia, if I remember correctly), that uses fodder and also ferments some of her feed. I recommend you also look at growing Crickets for feeding to your chickens. This will give them the protein they need along with the grain you are growing. Crickets are very very cheap to grow.

U can use grated dry coconut..to stretch feed. Also grow aloe vera plant lots and lots and purchase molasses and put in their drinking water. This cleans then naturally and makes them drink lots and lots of water. This plumps up the chicken. Also lime stone spread in the coop makes them pick at the stones which have calcium making the egg shell hard. This is what they do in Jamaica. Also we have a water grass that the chickens love.

I only had small flocks of chickens. I allowed them to roam free in the summer and forage for their food. This meant they needed a lot less grain. I also gave them all vegetable scraps we made from cooking our food, like potato peels and apple cores. The chickens went nuts for that bucket of scraps every day; they love fresh vegetable scraps.

I heard a interesting idea for chicken feed. Maggots. You need something that calls flies to lay eggs that the chickens can not get to product but can get maggots after they hatch and before they become flies Once you figure it out you have a revolving feed source. Just add product as needed. Have not yet tried this idea. But it sounds great to me.

People build mobile chicken coops which they use to follow cows on the pasture. Best would be day 4 after the cows. On day 5 the maggots become flies. They will eat the maggots and any other insects they can find.

I raise laying hens on leased grassland in a mobile coop, but I depend on commercial feeds. An older and much smarter farmer than me in my area feeds briolers on grains he grows after they are out of the brooder. Every day he mows 1 day of feed, and moves them onto the area in a mobile shelter with electric poultry net.

I'm a tech company CEO (former programmer) from the UK and starting a chicken farming in Thailand with my Thai wife who is a former scientist and now school Chemistry teacher. We already farm Black Soldier Fly and we will be using larvae (BSFL) to supplement the chicken feed. Our BSFL are upto 50% protein and 30% fat and we produce several tons per month. Hi; I too am beginning to grow my own chicken feed. I have started Moringa trees to use for feed as they have a 23% protein as well as all the amino acids our chickens need. I have a friend in Zambia and I know that Moringa grows very well in Africa and is actually better than the Moringa from India as there is less pollution in your land. I'm going to share some ideas here, you can combine things, pasture feeding, compost feeding set up worm farms, put some in pasture feed some worms back to chickens... Grow perrenial cabbages that you can use for feed and home use. Grow chokoes on the chicken farm structure... And also fermented grains, collect urine to increase pasture production. Worm farms can also feed in some of the chicken manure.... Sell chicken manure to farmers in the area.

@@hemangalex786 type worm farms into you tube search. Also worms have high protein content, you could feed them live if you have plenty or if it's viable process and dry them. You can also sell worms to others. They are very good for using up household food and scrap waste, they produce liquid that can be used to fertilise soil and change soil structure as well as droppings which when mixed with soil makes the nutrients in the soil more available to plants.

@@loliadanee8467 I forgot this one, fly larvae, I used to work on a chicken farm, but thought they are wasting alot of resources, I hope to get some chickens at home soon.... So get a bucket and make some holes at the bottom only small enough for fly larvae to crawl out of. First you get some rotten food or fish guts, and let the flies come and lay eggs, after a few days you put a lid on top and hang the bucket up high with the chickens as the larvae grow they will try to crawl out of bucket. When they find the holes they will fall out and your chickens will eat them, that is more protein for them.

Add some red pepper flakes or powder to your chicken feed (not lots but a cup or two per bucket full) and watch those egg numbers go up…much better than the chemicals added to those feeds to make the chickens lay 😉

When you have a decrease in egg production and you are mixing your own feed you need to ask yourself what are the chickens lacking in nutrition. It sounds like protein maybe. I would not discount making your own feed. I would make my own and add supplements to make sure they are getting the vitamins and supplements they need . sprout your feed ( saves 30%, more nutrition and you hall less water) make maggot traps to feed them almost free. Start a compost pile. and so on.
