@@derekhunter5040 generally held, yes, but there are dissenting points of view. You would be surprised about the history of the faroese pony. It actually was so strong for its size that people around the world, especially the UK would buy them and use them to work at places like coal mines and such. At one point the numbers also got so low that there was less than 5 left in the world (all being up here), it may have been as low as 3 left alive and then a group of people started working on keeping the breed alive so it would not go extinct. Population is now above 60 and may well be around 100. Been awhile since I've seen the numbers but my family knows one of the people that helps on the project to keep the pony around.

@@akumayoxiruma Right, but thankfully most politicians don't decide these things with their feelings. Iceland was a similar case. It was also part of Danmark and got independence. How? The nordic council protects Iceland. If it weren't for that protection, who knows what'd happen. Furthermore, Iceland is in a favorable geographic position. Greenland on the other hand... well. Faroe Islands benefits from being in the Danish Kingdom more than Danmark benefits from the Faroe Islands. These countries have no way of protecting themselves and especially in a time like this where UN laws seem to get ignored left and right, let's not. Iceland is as independent as Greenland and Faroe Islands are (If you ignore the parliamentarian representation ). Iceland's existence has for the past hundred years depended on nice neighbours. Greenland and Faroe Islands are autonomous, they decide what goes on locally. They're equivalent to Northern Ireland, Wales and Scotland in that regard.

So are these different from the Orkney Islands? Yes. But they have almost the same flag? One is part of Scotland, the other is part of Denmark though. Okay, now what's this about Shetlands?
@johnhughes21247 ай бұрын
All three used to belong to Norway and along with Norway (and Iceland) became part of Denmark under the Union of Kalmar. Norway lost the Shetland and Orkney islands because the King of Denmark (and Norway) didn't pay up on the dowry he owed the Scottish King in the late 1400s. When Sweden took Norway off Denmark in 1814 they said to Denmark 'keep the Faroe Islands'. So when Norway became an Independent country again they remained as part of Denmark ....... and not Norway.
@troelspeterroland69987 ай бұрын
When Sweden left the Kalmar Union in the 16th century and Danish became the official language of Norway after the Reformation and when finally the Norwegian (and also the Danish) Council of the Realm was abolished with absolutism in the 17th century, Norway had very much become the 'junior' partner in the union. But when King Christian I, raised as a German count, pawned Shetland to Scotland in the 15th century, he was clearly acting in his capacity as King of Norway. by the way, it wasn't Sweden that let Denmark keep the Faroes in the 19th century. They certainly wanted to expand there but the greater powers of Europe prevented them from doing so.

The UK, (The Kingdom of) The Netherlands, and (The Kingdom of) Denmark all have similar set-ups, in being sovereign states made up of multiple constituent countries. Those three are examples of where "Sovereign state" and "country" _aren't_ synonymous. The Faroes (along with Greenland) is a country within the sovereign state called The Kingdom of Denmark, but not part of the country called Denmark, which is also a country within the Kingdom of Denmark. More European countries had this set-up in the past, but it became less common with decolonisation.
