Eivør is wonderful. Good reaction as always. This was the right song to start with, if you want react more to her. I commend the person who suggested it. This was shot in western Norway, but Eivør is from the Faroe-islands (Føroyar), which was mostly settled by people from western norway. These isolated islands lie between England, Iceland and Norway. Faroese is comparable to 1300s norwegian. If you are looking for music you probably won't hear otherwise, I have many suggestions from within nordic countries... For now I'll limit myself to music comparable to Eivør and a little extra on the end. My first suggestion to each artist, is usually their first hit and best starting point to get into the artist. If you only want a single song from an artist, I suggest you pick one by the description you like the most. CELTIC (ish)- Vamp A norwegian folkband with much irish inspiration, and they played here at the same concert (ft. Eivør): Tir n'a noir - kzbin.info/www/bejne/b2irgmSLYtp6l7c NORSE - Wardruna/Aurora I'm sure you'll get plenty of suggestions of Helvegen by Warduna ft. Aurora, and maybe you already have. This could be called reimagined old norse music. This is also old style norwegian language mixed with even older style. This version has fairly accurate ENGLISH subtitles. The singer from Wardruna also composed much music for the tv-series "Vikings". kzbin.info/www/bejne/j4ioan96ftp0Zq8 Don't worry about the guy in blue, he was taken out on a boat later that night and never seen again. SAMI - Mari Boine If you want to go into a more "tribal" style, try Mari Boine, Sami from northern Norway. Does traditional samijoik and songs, mixed with modern jazz, rock and world style music. She has done collaborations with native americans and other cultures as well. Gula Gula - Her big break from 1989. No video. Live versions either don't do her justice or are very long: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fGS8fpKZo9mSndE Eagle Brother - Live at Oslo Opera 2009 kzbin.info/www/bejne/oaHVnWN5eqisoaM NORDIC -Various The swedish/norwegian art of cow-calling (There's descriptions in english), cute and fun, about 5mins total: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pHfJdppqgMxnnq8 kzbin.info/www/bejne/bIq8dIOurNF0ZqM kzbin.info/www/bejne/hWWyhKKChKiCidE Hedningarna This is a band you should/could get really into if you like world music. It is a swedish/finnish band combining traditional swedish/norwegian style music with finnish/karelic/eastern (usually finnish vocals) and much more. Brilliant and passionate musicians and instrumentmakers. Their albums have often quite different styles, and also within each album, so it's really hard to choose. Unfortunately there are no good musicvideos and few good live-versions, this limits my suggestions. Täss'on Nainen - From third (breakthrough?) album (1994). Just sound with lyrics and english translation. Quite "tribal". kzbin.info/www/bejne/q6SnmHWtbdSsY7c Veli - one personal favorite, just sound, but demonstrates some of their range: kzbin.info/www/bejne/lYiYgomLjtlojdE Mitä Minä - ok song, one of few good live recording s kzbin.info/www/bejne/sGO0knd8rKqrb6M Hedna - New (2017) with selfmade instruments - questionable video/sound quality, but awesome: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gaauZ36GpMhsaKc Gåte A norwegian band mixing rock and traditional melodies and lyrics. Quite young musicians and an exceptional singer who was 17 when their first album was released. Sjå attende (look back/behind you) - musicvideo from 2nd album. The singer is 19 here. kzbin.info/www/bejne/aXu9cpumnsyHqJY OTHER - Kaizers Orchestra, non-traditional norwegian band you might like, but never hear otherwise: I have seen many claims, that Tom Waits said this band was a favorite of his. Unfortunately I don't know if it's true, but they have strong similarites in style. Very dramatic and stylistic with pump-organ and gas-mask as trademarks. Lyrics are excellent, but in norwegian. You tell me what genre it is :) Ompa til du dør - First hit from first album 2001. No Video , but english translation on screen. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bpaYeJagbrqXhq8 Hjerteknuser (heartbreaker) - ENGLISH SUBTITLES - Heartbreaking song from "Violeta, Violeta", a three-album story. It's about the incredible life of Violeta and her family up till she's about age 14. I have yet to watch this without crying, as it resonates too much with stories of my life. I fear I'm not alone, as it was for some reason a core piece in the memorial-concert after the Utøya-massacre. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bovOd4ukopKFhLM Begravelsespolka - excellent video, also from Violeta... - typical Kaizerstyle - needs no translation. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hZjQo59vjtpsqbM Warning! If you read any of this, I might make other suggestions... and certainly if you request.

@@smylyface I recently found a cover to the song Eagle Brother (Goaskinviellja) I mentioned above, performed by a much younger artist. I think it's fantastic. Its style is perfect for a reaction and I think it's perfect for you. I am really torn, because I would love to see you do the original as well. There are far too few mature women being promoted in music. What is special about this cover is that it's a "Spontaneous acoustic take, from a beautiful rooftop terrace in Valparaíso, Chile" and only accompanied by accordian (which by itself is special, but goes amazingly well together). Just imagine walking around in the back-alleys there and hear that music from the rooftop... VILDÁ: Goaskinviellja - Eagle Brother (by Mari Boine): kzbin.info/www/bejne/h2a1apdoiriIgqc

@Ral Deform More likely they picked up this technique from Sibrrian neighbours which whom they had a lot of contact and trade with. Nordic tradition is more influenced by Finno-Ugric cultures than other Indo-Europeans due to shared environment. Though they did colonize Greenland where there are Inuit people.

I enjoy your reactions. Regarding whether the "tribal sense" is something someone is born with: The idea made me sort of chuckle a little bit. I also have a Native American heritage and I am registered with our tribe. It seems to me that every human naturally has a tribal sense; because it's largely based on family affiliation--in the way that a clan is family, but on a scale bigger. There are so many ways a person can be denied their own heritage and become disconnected--economic or political circumstances, personal or societal tragedy. When that happens, people just gravitate toward other people they can connect to. They sort of learn who they want to belong to, a family (if you will) of their own choosing. When you have a group of people who have shared interests, who respect and honor each other, who defend and support each other, who mentor and cheer each other...voila! A tribe! And by the way, thank you for putting yourself out there as a reactor for us, so we can experience the joys of hearing something wonderful along with you.

She’s my favorite female vocalist. Speaking of Lord Of The Rings, please begging of you to KZbin “ eivor may it be” ( Lord Of the rings). Performed with full orchestra in a concert hall in front of thousands AND QUEEN OF DENMARK!!! Beyond incredible!!! She’s from the small Faroe island and when she gives a performance virtually the whole island of about 600 show up. She has an angelic voice so unique , so mystical , so magical, so entrancing so hauntingly beautiful as you just found out. It she can rock! Here are 2 in English That blew me away: : “ Eivor Palsdottir Wake me Up” ( 7: 11 duration) it’s in English and she kills it with celestial high notes and emotional impact. It’s about her longing to wake up from this earthy dream and reunite with a lover that left her with this heart-wrenching longing. ( and oh boy does her voice scale the ethereal heights). This vocalist has already become in my favorite top 5 female vocalists of all time! Of all time!!! And I just discovered her less than a month ago. How on God’s earth did i ever overlook this world class vocalist. Watch the drummer go crazzzyyy. Eivor “ free falling” ( the one that’s 6:47 duration) It’s on the island but inside I believe a restaurant seating capacity ( when the camera panned the audience) probably 300 lucky lucky souls to witnessed this beyond amazing performance. She put it on KZbin about 3 years ago and very few views and likes. If she performed it in America and there were 50,000 in attendance , all 50,000 would be screaming and yelling for a long time during and after the performance. The strobe lightening, post production camera work, her otherworldly vocal is beyond belief. At the end she hits notes that are so celestial so mystical so heavenly that even the great Dimash couldn’t execute with the emotional impact and purity that Eivor does. And a band member on drums was really into it! is a sight to behold. Excuse my excitement but whenever I discover an amazing vocalist I can’t control my emotions. I was one of the very first to discover and highly recommend (before the masses reacted to): Morissette, Daryl Ong, Dimash, ( best pop-op vocalist in the world), Diana Ankudinova, , Park Hyoshin ( best ballad vocalist in the world) , Park Ki Young ( one of the best female vocalists.. as good as or better than So Hyang ), Forestella ( best male vocal harmony group in the world). Lara Fabian ( adagio, broken bow) All love, Al

It should be mentioned, perhaps, that this isn't a traditional folk song but an Eivor original which, I think, makes it even cooler. While having elements of traditional styles it's also very uniquely her own. Also the breadth of her work over the past 20 years is really something. Television scores, folk, jazz, opera, pop, rock, electronic, grunge, a few songs even with a slight country tinge. I only discovered her last year. It's taken way too long for her to break out here in the States.

Tròdlabùndin means "spellbound" or trollbound if you will. Troll refers here, not to the mythical beings (Trolls), nor the not-so-mythical internetvariety, but magic. It's easy to see that "bundin" has the same stem as "bound". It is a reminder of how closely related the two languages actually are.

Eivør is wonderful, inspiring and amazing and ... a really nice person!! I was lucky to see her just recently on her Solo-Tour (in Basel, Switzerland). I was standing about 4m away from her in that small but fitting location, it was truly out of this world. Her voice has something cleansing, it's so pure, enchanting and beautiful. And - a little side story - she got people's attention after her first song by asking the ladies in the room for a nail file, since one of her nails broke a bit ... :-) So, she stood there, in the spot light, smiled, and took her time to do her nail :-) Then with a cute ThankYou she continued with her performance. I guess all the men in the audience were "Group hug with Eivør!!" - I really can't wait to go to see her again live (with a nail file in MY pocket ...)

Just wanted to say, amazing reaction! I also come from family that had to abandon their "nativeness" when they were moved from here in Indiana to the reservation in Oklahoma. We are Miami (Miaamiaki), and there is a deep separation between those who stayed here, and those who chose to go. It's sad, and unfortunate. Most of my family doesn't acknowledge those native roots, but I do, and my kids do. There really IS something primal to Eivør's music, and that steady drumbeat, the vocalizations, etc, really touch that primal part of all of us. Dare I say especially those who are so recently connected to the primal, indigenous roots? I don't know. I know I love it though. :) Anyhow, just wanted to throw it out there that I appreciated what you had to say with it all. Have a great day!

I was delighted to hear you speculate about "tribal" affiliations at the end of your piece. As one of the other commenters said, we all have them, especially the ones we choose ourselves (in ancient times, my own ancestors fought as a family group, painted themselves blue, and ran into battle naked; and when they've had enough to drink, they still do). With respect to this video, however, I commented on another reviewer's review that this performance sounded vaguely Native American, and some other readers felt that way as well. I'm not sure what musical elements made me think that, but clearly, there's something there that resonates with more people than just me and you. I wonder what it is? JT
