Herbert Grönemeyer's wife was an actress. If you know that, you might understand the passages about Shakespeare's Midsummer Night's Dream and the Golden Balcony a little better. Grönemeyer never wanted to perform again after his wife's death, but his children asked him to sing this song in which he dealt with her death. The album "Mensch" was created as a result.

If you understand German, this song is even more moving. The German language is - contrary to many opinions - very poetic. It simply has many more words than other languages. This allows you to express moods in nuances. Herbert Grönemeyer is a master at this, a real poet, in all of his songs. His voice is very distinctive, but not necessarily beautiful in the traditional sense. Some people jokingly call him “Grölemeyer” (“grölen” = to bawl). But his voice is unmistakable on his ballads.

Imho and speaking as a german he's a terrible singer and the german langauge is just not pleasant to listen to, at least in a musical context. It's also a myth that german is in any way more expressive than other languages. Very often in conversations I have to translate my thoughts from english into german because english is so much more expressive than german.

I visited one of his concerts this summer and of course he played that song. As it ended and I stood there with tears in my eyes, I overheard a conversation of a roughly 50 year old couple beneath me. They were both wiping tears off their eyes (like many people did). They started laughing and the man said "Selbst wenn man nicht will, das passiert mir jedes mal" ("Even if you don't want to [cry], this happens everytime"). That was one of the most intense concerts moments I ever had. Two minutes before, everyone danced and then we stood there, complete strangers, no way to hide the tears from each other. It was a weird but great feeling because no one was really unhappy or anything. Everyone had just enjoyed letting themselves fall into this hole of contemplativeness, just letting out all the sadness of life and then everyone was happy the song was over now and we could return to having fun at the show. Sorry for the wall of text, it's just hard to describe in English. That's what the other commentators mean when they say that German is good for the nuances of poetry.

My dad passed away the year Herbert had his comeback with this tour and this song. I never felt any grief after my dad died, I was 23 years old and just moved to another town... But several years later when I heard this song I suddenly broke down in tears and grief hits me so hard it was terrifying and wonderful at the same time. It was then that I realized that I never really allowed myself to get over my dads death... From this day on I listen to this song every now and then and cry my heart out remembering my dad and all the good times we had. I wished I had more time with him but as Herbert sings, life isn't fair. Thank you for sharing your story, it's such a great song!

It describes all the little great things that make a loved person special for you, it also gives an inside in the devestational pain you feel when you lose that person. For me as a German, this song together with "Halt mich" are the two *most beautiful* Lovesongs i have ever heard sung in German. I literally don´t know any other song or lyrics in German that move me and let me feel that much. Makes me cry every single time. "Every room you flooded with sun(shine)" doesn´t do the German original "Du hast jeden Raum mit Sonne geflutet" any justice. For me, it is one of the most beautiful compliments you could ever give to a loved one or partner. And yes, you can see it in every facial expression, and his voice, that Herbert has loved his wife very much. The way he sings this is heart wrenching.

Well, the way he sings I guess reafirms this a bit. He does not sing with a real gentle connotation, quite the opposite. He uses unusual accentuation even for german ears (which he is famous for) - that makes it rather hard sounding, sometime a bit like the barking of a Dog. Sometimes a more gentle line of lyrics shines through, but there are better singers to make the german language comforting for foreigners ears than Grönemeyer. He is an interesting singer though, but not a great one in the conventional sense of having a great voice or bandwith - more an excellent song writer and poet than a singer I would say. But I do understands fans of him - once you get used to his way of singing it can grow on you. An acquired taste, one could say, and for certain one of a kind.

I lost my lovly Aunt in the 90,s alsso to cancer, she was such a good person and allways knew the right words in every situation. When i heard this song for the first time my tears could stop because every Passage of this song is like its written for her . The best way to understand how great of a person she was is : Du hast den Raum mit Sonne geflutet! Because when she came in a room or you just meet her on the street everyone was all smiles and in good Spirits in an instant. This was the last song my grandma wished for her funeral, which sadly happened last friday, cause she passed away on the 26th april ... My aunt/her daughter died in december and chosed this as her last funeral song too. I´m thinking my granny died cause she was heartbroken to have to bury her own daughter. :( I have a very heavy heart and it hurts to listen to it but your reaction brought me to smile, cause you felt the meaning! Saw him live in Bochum a couple weeks ago, it just leaves no eye dry. His German lyrics are poetic and he paints pictures of the beauty of his wife and you just feel the pain of losing her, but his defiance to not give himself up, too.

Grönemeyer is a great poet. The song "Mensch" was written at the same time. And he also finds so clear and strong words to let us know what he's thinking and feeling deep within after loosing his wife. And there's another song, if I hear it tears are running :It's called "Golf November" by Reinhard Mey

This is definitely one of the best German Lovesongs of all time. Herbert for us Germans is not just a singer. He really is an icon for us! He had huge success in movies (e.g. Das Boot), but also as a singer songwriter! Afditionally he is strongly engaged in social projects and he's a really funny guy. I'm really touched that someone not knowing any German is getting so hooked up to cry finally!

Herbert Grönemeyer "Mensch" was played at my mothers funeral when I was 13. And even though he had cheerful songs like the Football song "Zeit das sich was dreht" or his earlyer songs, I cant listen to his voice anymore without getting emotional. He is a poet and songwriting talent!

When I first heard this song for the first time, I broke down cried hard and missed my mom so much. But also felt so much love for her and also touched by Grönemeyers love for his wife.
