How long had it been since this horses last shoeing? You did a great job, your technique is fabulous. You do care about the horses and their comfort. Have you ever restored a severely neglected horses hooves? That's something I would like to see more in the farrier community. I've watched farriers work on our horses since I was 9 years of age and have always enjoyed the process. Have you worked on foals at their first and second trims? Have horses tried to play with you while trimming their front hooves? Really, really enjoy the process. Thanks for sharing! 😎

That just depends on how dry the hoof is. I'm more concerned with the angle the horses hoof is at.

Each horse is an individual, some gave more problems with their hooves that others.

@@feathersong5838 If the farrier is working to correct the hoof this has to be done incrementally over several sessions. If they correct it completely in one shoeing that can often lead to other issues for the horse because it’s body isn’t used to it.

I believe you’re asking about the “gouge” used to create a small divot for the clench to rest in? It’s a step that a lot of farriers don’t really bother with. Typically undercutting the nails with the side of the rasp and then rasping the clenches smooth after clenching is sufficient. I’m all about the details and doing quality work, but I’ve never felt like the gouge made enough difference to incorporate an additional step in my finish process. Clenches should be rasped thin enough, that in the event that a shoe does get pulled off, the nails can straighten and pull back through the wall without removing large chunks of hoof with the shoe..

I have never seen even 1 other farrier that digs so deep, and removes so much material. Especially around the frog, and the frog itself. That horse was seriously protesting. I was hoping he could rest a bit. The work is GORGEOUS and aesthetically pleasing, but as I said, never have I seen so much extra gouging and grinding. I've never seen another farrier use a sander on a hoof either. I am not a farrier lol, so I'm not criticizing because I don't know the inns and outs, just saying what I saw, of course by a layman.

I can't give a opinion on the digging and going a bit deeper, but for rasps or what u called a sander i do. Rasps or are very commonly used around me, so personally i see it a lot. I do my own horses feet and I use a rasp because when I dont, I see some slight bumps that may cause a uneven fit for when I shoe my horse, or when the hoof is on the ground, it is uneven. It's like a nail file I guess, to better round the edges. I also know its used to pre round the toe so the horse doesnt have to wear it down themselves.

Farrier treat each horse as individuals, if there’s potential infection or other issues they need to take off more. As for never seeing a farrier use a sander, you can’t have seen many horses being shod then, it’s common practice.
