I pay $160 a month for 4 shoes. It is insane but he is the farrier my barn uses I use him bc I cannot be out there due to work. He does the pro barrel horses at my barn that's why he charges so much.

You should still have a farrier come out occasionally to make sure nothing is wrong. Unless you are professionally trained you still should have someone come out every now and then.

I was an equine technician years back. I’ve been extremely lucky. My previous two farriers were so highly educated and knowledgeable. One moved away, the other passed away. I got a new one who’s work was absolutely frightening! Then later he comes out with his 14 yr old son and has him trimming my horse!Needless to say he never worked for me again. My latest is even more knowledgeable than my first two. You simply must have a farrier who truly knows the science behind what he/she is doing!!

I actually have the best farrier and I am so grateful! He honestly told me when he thought my horses didn't need shoes and he told me all the things he was doing to my horses hooves and why they are good techniques and what are bad techniques.

I’ve had farriers that have pulled the leadrope out of my hands in order to yank on my horse’s head then get mad at me for asking them to stop. This has happened twice. I’m lucky to have an amazing gentle farrier now.

One farrier was trimming my mustang and she was being a pill because shes young and the farrier was trying to teach my mom who has trained and owned LOTS of horses how to teach the mustang to hold up her feet and he refused to trim her

No. If something goes wrong than you can give them a tip for putting up with you and your assurances that you’ll practice before next time more. They build their own tip in if needed by telling you it’s X for that horse. Basically they’ve built in the profit they want and if not they will tell you. My farrier charges $20 more if is only one horse because he doesn’t make what he wants to come out otherwise. That is while we are on the calendar and he is driving on a set route too.
