I was thinking about using a blue in our dark hallway, any recommendations? And if not blue I was considering a yellow undertone- you went through that kind of quickly so I’m not sure which yellow undertone would be best. So far we have painted one bedroom in Borrowed Light and two in Parma Gray. People walk in those rooms and just rave about them. We still have to do two big rooms, our windowless laundry room which has stainless appliances, our hall bathroom and our main hallway. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. The two large rooms have vaulted ceilings and a lot of windows.
@NicoleSage14 күн бұрын
I would keep to a lighter blue if possible, unless you want to lean into the darkness. Something such as Selvedge for something darker, and Green Blue - it has those green undertones so instantly makes the blue feel warmer and is perfect for a hallway. For a warmer neutral with yellow or red undertone, look at Oxford stone, string or off-white, sandy toned neutrals that are warm and pair well with the blues you mentioned if you look at the overall colour scheme of the house. Windowless laundry room - go bold here! Sulking Room Pink, Farrow's Cream or lean into the darkness with De Nimes.

I use diamond Matt in my bathroom, I have never had any problems however my bathroom is large with good ventilation, if your bathroom is small with bad ventilation that gets lots of condensation it is not recommended.

I live in a first floor apartment and have just painted my entrance staircase in skimming stone. The banisters and staircase wood is a gingery coloured wood which I’m going to paint over. What finish paint would you suggest for durability and what colour will sit nice with the skimming stone…thank you
@NicoleSage5 күн бұрын
Morning! I would use modern emulsion (7% sheen) which is the most durable for woodwork and heavy traffic areas - for a colour pairing, you could lean into something like Railings for a gorgeous contrast, very popular with skimming stone, or even a green tone a couple shades darker than skimming stone for a really stylish, relaxed feel, such as French Gray, Vert De Terre or go for something darker such as green smoke. Alternatively, lean into a darker neutral such as Dove Tale or Elephant's Breath, hope that helps! Nicole x

Even if I do love FB paints and have actually painted my whole apartment in FB colors it is absolutely not true that one coat is enough. You WILL need the 2 or 3 coats depending on the color. It’s actually what FB color consultants recommend.

One coat with F&B has always been great on our walls in this renovation (all applied to fresh plaster and mist coat), maybe that comes down to the prep work and consistency of paint applied to the walls
@JT-HADOUKEN3 ай бұрын
F&B is definitely a one coat if prepped and applied correctly. Of course F&B like all paint brands will recommened 2-3 coats because.. 1. It gets the unknowing diyers to spend more 2. Saves any backlash when said novice applies 1 coat and then moans because there mist coat is grinning through.

Thanks! As you have a narrow space, I would personally use the same colour on the walls and ceiling, it gives the illusion of a bigger space. Sounds like it benefits from good light though - here are a mixture of earthy inspired shades worth considering; Oxford Stone, Schoolhouse White Smoked Trout, Vert De Terre, Eddy, Setting Plaster. If you don't want to colour drench the ceiling also, I would stick with a warm white such as Wimborne white or even wevet for a light feel.

I'm painting my hallway, ceiling and upper walls are going to be Wimborne white and bottom half french gray, what would you suggest for doors, skirting and stair rail and bannisters?
@NicoleSage4 ай бұрын
Morning, if the bottom half is French Gray, I would paint your skirtings in the same colour as well as the architraves and doors. If you add another colour to skirtings you end up segmenting the walls in bands of colours. I would then introduce a punchier colour onto the stairs such as Red Earth. If you want something more traditional, Railings is a popular choice for the stair rail and bannisters or lean into the green tones of French Gray and add something like Treron to the stairs for definition. Hope that helps, Nicole x

The colour suggestions are really helpful, thank you. I have a decent size hall (t- shaped) with winding stairs, but when all doors are closed to the adjoining rooms, the space is dark. I have a porcelain tiled dark grey floor with warm brown hints which runs through to the kitchen. What colour would warm and lighten the hallway? The original new build white looked cold and the recent grey looks depressing and gloomy. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Hey! Because of the dark flooring, the best approach will be going for a warm yellow or red based white (depending what undertone you like) and using this up and across the ceiling for a cosier feel. I'd look at Wimborne White, Dimity of Pointing. If you want something a bit cosier but not as bright, Oxford Stone is great in north facing rooms (I have this in my north facing bedroom, it's really cosy), it will look darker in your darkest corners so worth testing a couple of your faves first! If you have the space, without seeing the flooring, I would add a long runner rug as it will break up the darkness of the grey and bring some warmth into the space. Hope that helps!

We're probs going to go with dimity/Oxford stone/ jonas on the half height panelling etc paired with a complementary white e.g pointing and like a white on the ceilings and skirts and doors etc What do you think? Also thoughts on accent color may go with studio green handrail...does that mean we need to match the handrail with something else...thanks
@NicoleSage4 ай бұрын
Thank you! That sounds like a really good plan with colours so far, and a pop of colour on the rail will pull the scheme together. Not necessarily, although it helps if you can add that shade in somewhere else so it feels intentional, such on a vase or a decor accessory.

@NicoleSage2 ай бұрын
I'd keep with something light and neutral, but with a slight bit of definition on the bottom half to ground the scheme. Look at something like Slipper Stain on the panelling and Wimborne white on the walls and ceiling. If you want something with a bit of colour, think about introducing a soft green on the panelling like Eddy or Vert De Terre with Wimborne White or Lime White on the upper part and ceiling.

Love skimming stone! Yes - so you can either use the same colour onto your skirting if you want to give the illusion of a bigger space, or I would go for something a couple of shades darker to add definition. I would use Dove Tale or elephants breath. If you want something with more of a greige tone, Vitty Green would work well. @NicoleSage6 ай бұрын
If you want a blue, I'd go for something lighter in tone as a dark blue in a dark hallway will swallow the light and make it feel super dark. Coastal Grey is lovely or Mineral Mist, I have some other blue suggestions here that might help; www.sleek-chic.co.uk/2023/04/dulux-blue-colour-chart.html

The front hallway has an opaque glass arch around the front door so lots of light comes in through it, the back hallway has light from the rooms that come off it ie the kitchen and living room so it's darker. Coming in through the front door, the front hallway has moss green on the left wall. There is a 2nd door (a dark varnished door with glass panels) to the back hallway, and on the wall space above that door, I painted it folly pink which is a light terracotta. It looked too bright and garish with the green so I toned it down into a copper colour. It still looks overpowering with green next to it and the overall colour scheme is too strong. So should I use an off white in that wall space above the 2nd door instead,and if so, which white would work with the moss green and feel more calm and stylish, the ammonite or others? Thanks in advance
@TheMLMGoldАй бұрын
So the problem is 2 strong colours in the hallway, quite a dark moss green on left hand wall and copper above 2nd door, and lower facing wall on the right. I was thinking of re-doing the moss green into something lighter and more subdued like green stone by Little Green paints, and perhaps also muting the copper/burnt orange with either a complementary white or colour. One of them certainly needs toning down, if not both, what would you suggest, and any colour recommendations? The right hand wall could be Jitney as I like the chocolate, sandy tone more so than the Oxford Stone, but that wall also needs to complement the colour scheme without overpowering it, so it could work...or even a complementary white there, I'm not sure.
@NicoleSageАй бұрын
Ah I think I can visualise this quite well - the problem is that the two bold colours are fighting for attention, however, just having one bold wall in itself can be difficult in a colour scheme unless that colour if featured elsewhere in the space so it feels intentional. Without seeing the space, I would remove the copper colour and go for a complementary, warm white against the green such as Wimborne white, or skimming stone for something a bit warmer. Depending on how dark the green is, and how light this area is, even on days when it's a bit dull or an evening, a dark green sucks the light even more, so I would personally be inclined to lean into a softer green shade here and pair that with a warm white, lots of lovely shades such as Lichen, Ball Green and Vert De Terre for an earthy feel without it being overpowering.
@TheMLMGoldАй бұрын
@NicoleSage Thanks for those great suggestions! I think I solved the issue by repainting the copper colour with Oxford Stone so it feels much warmer now. The honey dew look against the light is warm and inviting and it offsets the darker moss green whilst complementing it. However, in the 2nd hallway, that same moss green appears much darker so I may use one of those greens you suggested. I'll have to get some samples. What do you think of Green Stone, too dark also? When I put it against the current green, it appears lighter. I also discovered French Grey recently which is light and refreshing and looks more green than grey, it looks great in the side room off the 2nd hallway and in the bathroom upstairs. It doesn't zap the light like a moss or olive green but reflects it nicely and stands out.
@TheMLMGoldАй бұрын
@@NicoleSage That moss green looks good in the front hallway on the left hand wall as it's a well lit area....but the space is lacking something. I have Joa's white on the right wall which is ok but it creates a muddy shade under the sloping staircase cabinet which goes halfway down that right wall from the ceiling. That muddiness continues above the 2nd door which leads into the back hallway. I'd like a brighter white under the sloping staircase cabinet to make it less muddy, would that be achieved with the Skimming Stone, or the Wimborne white.. or another white like just straight white? Lastly, do you recommend doing both sides of that front hallway in the same colour, ie in moss green? It goes well on that left wall but not sure if it would overpower the space by having it on both sides, or perhaps it would add some consistency. I guess having both side walls the same colour is the norm. PS I've ordered the Vert de terre and lichen samples that you recommended for the back hallway, Ball Green isn't available till after Xmas...I think it's more of a grey green and probably duller than the other two so I'll see how these two look when I collect them later

Deluxe is to simple and there’s no depth in the colours. I find premium paints offer depth to their paints.

I have a dark west facing hallway, I was thinking blanc de chine on the walls and de nimes on the woodwork? I have a rail at the top of the stairs so not sure if de nimes would be too dark. Other option might be skirting and rail in slipper satin
@NicoleSage3 ай бұрын
Hey! Love the choice of these two colours next to each other, I wouldn't go for slipper satin on the skirting as this is lighter than blanc de chine, best to go for a shade at least two shades darker on the woodwork for definition. De Nimes is a dark colour in general so it will feel even darker in your darkest areas, just something to be mindful of, but if you get a lot of light afternoon/evening you may get away with it. Best way is to get a tester onto A4 sheets of paper so you can carry through the space. Ideally, you want the rail in the same shade as the woodwork. Hope that helps!
