I truly believe the Boo theory has some evidence, but in a different way. Some can argue that King Boo is dead Bowser in Luigi's mansion, and in Bowser's inside story, there is a Boo and Koopa that are a couple. My guess is that Boos are dead Koopas, who have been killed by Mario, and are thus terrified by him.

I have another theory i heard that the sunken ghost ship in super mario world is a old airship from super mario bros 3 and the boos are enemies that lost there lives when the ship drowned,and what backs this up is that if you compare a super mario bros 3 airship with that same level there is a lot of similarities to the design

There's also another theory suggesting that every single Mario game after the first was really fictional within the game's universe. That Mario had the one and only adventure, and spent the rest of his life putting on performances back on Earth retelling it. Each was slightly different and more elaborate, and each used the greater resources afforded to Mario as his fame and fortune grew. All to keep his fans coming back.

There is also MatPat's theory that the Mario series is based on 'thrill' kidnappings- Bowser runs a thrill-seeker's company that people pay money to get 'kidnapped' for a thrill/break from their normal lives. The princess calls up Bowser when she has been getting bored and they arrange a new 'plot'. Mario also gets a break from his plumbing work to become a hero. This theory explains why Bowser's plans always crumble so easily and why Mario and friends invite Bowser to go go-karting with them.

That actually makes a lot of sense. Mario could actually have spent a long time fighting in the Mushroom Kingdom and when he got back home, he had a dream about one of his other adventures. He then got inspired to put on a play using hired actors wearing costumes to help him show off some of his adventures to the children. Afterwords he then went to help Daisy with her kingdom the same way as Peach. Realizing Peach had left him a castle, he goes there to find Wario waiting for him

They're remnant of their cities. That also explain the lack of cities in that universe. Another thing that makes my theory stronger is that there are MANY more human ghosts than actual living humans as seen in Luigi's Mansion. The war may be why Mario and Luigi ended up in New-York even though they were born in the Mushroom Kingdom as we see in Yoshi's Island. Their parents must've sent them there to protect them. Another theory about the Boo's is that they're actually the ghosts of enemies that died the reason for this theory is that in Super Mario World there's a level called the ghost ship which, according to the instruction booklet, is meant to be a crashed air ship from SMB3. This is proven because at the end of the level you find an orb which you also get at the end of every air ship level in SMB3. Since the crew is gone and boo's are all over, it's thought that the crew died in the crash.

Actually, there's a theory I've heard like it. Peach has signed up to "arranged kidnappings". This allows Peach to have excitement in her life, Mario, a nobody plumber, to be a somebody, and Bowser to get *ahem* "special payment". This also explains why Bowser and various Koopa Troop members appear in Mario spin-offs as playable characters.

The invincibility theme and Viva la Vida playing at the same time is going to give me nightmares for the rest of my life.

I have a theory about how Mario and Luigi are ex-members of an organization of Mercenaries known as the Hammer Bros. This is made more possible by the fact that when Mario was known as Jumpman (A definite code or nickname), he used a giant mallet. This same Mallet's design is used by Hammer Bros sometimes instead of normal thrown hammers. Another is that the Hammer Bros' beak is more like a mask when compared to the Koopa's beaks.

That would explain why they're not around and why Peach's grandmother is a Toad. The leader of the Koopa clan was Bowser's father, who died because of the sacrifice of Peach's parents. Seing how the Koopas were winning would also explain why the Goombas, not wanting to be almost anihilated like the humans, joined forces with the Koopa clan. The humans losing the war would also explain all of those pipes and sewers everywhere.

To add to that, in Super Paper Mario, when Bowser and Peach were married at the beginning of the story, it caused the Chaos Heart to appear, which was going to destroy all of existence, signifying it was never meant to be. So if Peach and Bowser getting married causes the Chaos Heart to appear, I'm sure them having kids together would just make the universe explode in an instant! Besides, none of the Koopalings have even remotely any physical traits of Peach, let alone that of human beings!

the booklet for Super Mario Bros. on the NES states that the people of the Mushroom Kingdom were transformed into bricks by some sort of Koopa magic, so all the bricks Mario smashed were probably little Toads.
