Fascism derives from 'fasces,' the name of a halberd-luke axe ancient Romans used as a symbol letting people know they were not afraid of acting with draconian brutality. I'm trying to make sense of that too. So far it seems that fascism can come in a number of forms, but elements that are often present, are extreme nationalism, nostalgia for a great past, superiority, an inferior yet powerful enemy and a culture of violence. I found Umberto Eco's list of 14 points on how to recognize a fascist a good starting point, with the caveat that it's inspired by his own experiences under Italian fascism. How does Israel score? Apart from the 'great leader' most elements seem to be abundantly present in the Zionist ideology and practice. But, who am I, other people may present cleaner criteria.

The Left vs Center issue is a bit of a conundrum for the left, because it is not reciprocal. The left maintains an awareness of the center as a lesser evil and tries to unite with it to stop fascism. But the center then gets most of the power and proceeds with doing things which betray the truth of its position: that it regards fascism as the lesser evil. It allows things to keep moving that direction. It all has the appearance of a trap that would only be defeated by a substantial break to the left to allow it a majority without alliance with the center.
