This week I pattern a sports corset from an 1890s fashion corset, using plenty of extant examples, including a sneak peak that I got from a real life Ferris Good Sense Waist.
I decide which features of the athletic corset I want to keep, and then figure out how to alter my existing corset pattern (Symington 18788) to accommodate those changes.
I will attempt to show you guys my personal process for modifying corset patterns, based off of… well basically ZERO experience and some common sense, and all would have gone well except for some silly errors that were made along the way.

Dude. You've got a gun show going on. 👍 And I agree with the logic of making the medium-lengtth version. The short version DOES look like just a boned sports bra and kind of defeats the purpose. Understanding that is exciting for some reason.

That long waist is so elegant. I can absolutely see why you'd have liked to go that route if possible. :)

oh my goodness, I mean... if I could have gone that route, not only does that mean that I'd have these gorgeous elegant lines on my corset waist, but also that I'd have the most amazing waist/torso! Too bad one can only pad OUT and not UP!

hmm... I'm wondering if, instead of a powernet panel you could overlap a bunch of elastic straps, like the way they overlap ribbons in ribbon corsets. You'd avoid the gaps, and still use an elastic style similar to that of the 1890's.

It's definitely an option to explore. I've used overlapping elastic strips before (on the bottoms of gaitors/spats) and I never liked that solution; the way you get two thicknesses of elastic in certain places always kind of bugged me. But that's just a personal preference on my part, and I think your option is interesting as well! Full panels of elastic, while certainly more prevalent in the 19-teens, is seen at least as early as 1902, so at least I'm not jumping the gun TOO much ;-)

@@ShannonMakes, just a thought the power elastic done doubled but cut at an angle and placed back to back would add more body to it which would also add a better strength to the side panels. Sorry I can picture it in my head but having trouble explaining it. I remember (about to show my age) 40 years ago buying a modern elasticated only pull on tummy flatness ad it was made with the same stuff you used on the side of the corset but each panel was made with ( \ / ) to make it Look like ( | ) this made the elastic stronger but because of the way it was done it also stopped it from wearing out fast they lasted for almost 30 years but I can not find them today (note to past self always buy a spare😹😹😹) in other words the way it was made not only supported me it also supported the garment as well and thus made it last longer. The only drawback is elastic does eventually brake down no matter how much you care for it. It starts to harden if not used once it has been worn a few times I think that has something to do with our body sweat and then the washing of the garment. I liked the idea of the elastic side panel but when I do look to making one I think I will opt for the option of using the dubbed version idea for added support and allowing it to support itself as well. Now off to watch the next video on your making it🤗🤗🤗
