I was always taught that if you wear a tie with an OCBD it should be a knit tie

I like this discussion. I'm a slider from another dimension, just trying to find my way home. In the world I come from, we call those Oxford shirts, and we always wear ties with them. It's practically the ubiquitous national school, military, and professional uniform. In fact, the non-Oxford non-buttoned collar dress shirt is exclusively for extremely formal situations -- weddings, funerals, court.... Maybe not a silk tie, though.

The tie with an OCBD with a sport jacket, blazer or a suit is a statement of American Ivy Leage aesthetic. I would not expect the British or Euros to appreciate such.

Great content. I am thoroughly enjoying these videos and the chemistry between you two gents. Concerning the topic in this one, I often wear a tie with a button down collar, but only with a blazer or sports jacket. From my own experience, this type of collar generally works best with a smaller knot, particularly a simple four-in-hand with a silk tie. A bulky knot blows out the limited collar space and looks out of proportion.

What is amazing is that this discussion is still taking place on KZbin in 2023, when American men have been wearing an OCBD as a regular part of business wear from the 1960s. G Bruce Boyer, from his 1985 book _Elegance_ wrote,” The button down collar is at the casual end of the business-shirt spectrum, and is the jauntiest collar that one can wear in the office or board room.” [p 49] Among the American legal profession, wearing the OCBD is ubiquitous. The last two US Attorney Generals have worn OCBDs in their official capacity. While the current AG, Merrick Garland, doesn’t wear an OCBD all the time, his predecessor, William Barr, almost always wore an OCBD. I’ve seen photos of Ramsey Clark and William Mitchell, US Attorney Generals from the 1960s, wearing an OCBD while in office. Special Counsels Bob Mueller, John Durham and Jack Smith have worn OCBDs either while making court appearances, testifying before Congress or while speaking to the press. Finally, many members of Congress have worn OCBDs while performing their duties on Capitol Hill. So, while it might be considered to be inappropriate for formal occasions in the UK, it is perfectly acceptable as business wear in the US by the most conservative of professions.

A button down collar is not always oxford cloth. They might be wearing OCBDs but it can also be very hard to tell if someone is pressing and starching an oxford cloth shirt or if it’s twill, poplin, pinpoint, or broadcloth. It’s especially hard to tell at any typical distance you’d usually see these guys from.

I really enjoyed this segment. Getting OCD ‘bout an OCBD. Wow. I see nothing wrong with a button down shirt and tie although I suppose one should consider choice of knots. For me at this point, I’d now keep my button down sans tie with a smart coat. As for sprezzatura, the idea is nonchalance or rakish informality and I quite like it. But let’s be honest, it is contrived in the effort to be stylishly informal. The one undone button is simply ridiculous. I like some of Chris’s asides in this segment; a bit of a smart-arse peeking through. 😂 Anyway, nice work gents!

I've been wearing ties with OCBDs for sixty years (LONG before I'd ever heard the term "OCBD"). Brooks Brothers has been selling button down shirts in the States for more than one hundred years. Ties with ODBDs? As we say on this side of the pond - that horse has left the barn. I'd wear that foulard with a blue button-down shirt any day of the week. I wouldn't wear that striped shirt with a suit; but I would wear it with a sport jacket (and a solid colour - that's for you - silk knit tie).

Great comment! I used to wear Bengal stripe shirts during my work career, and these have been quite common here in the UK. I think Chris’s one works well with his plain suit; it is the bold pattern of his tie that perhaps makes things look a little too busy. You are right about ‘OCBD’, that one is a new to me too!

I never wore a Winchester shirt when they were last fashionable in the latter half of the 1980s, possibly because every other gent in the City of London, where I was working at the time, was wearing them. I have thought of buying one now, but my hesitation is that it might look a little dated, be it the height of formal smartness. Your answer has prodded me to rethink. The Winchester shirt is overdue a return, and I would like to be one step ahead of Chris Modoo when it does! 😊

I love button downs and a left pocket. However to reach a compromise I have a hidden button down collar shirt with no pocket for more formal suit wear.

In the South, maybe it was just New Orleans, I was instructed not to wear a tie with a button down. It might have been just subsequent to when at a young age I leaned that Southern Commandment of only wearing seersucker between Easter and Labor Day. Now that even that has been challenged with Easter to Halloween. So, maybe the tie is fine with the Oxford cloth button down.

Why not suggest wearing an Ascot/cravat with an OCBD shirt. That works very well because the button down gives good support to the collar.

I've thought about this quite a bit (too much time on my hands) and I believe there's cultural differences here. In the UK (maybe not so Ireland) there is a general rule among more sartorially conservative men that one does not wear a button down collar with a tie. A bit like not wearing brown shoes in "the city". However in the USA the button down collar is absolutely everywhere to the extent the stereotypical "G-Man", Robert Mueller types, CIA etc, they always have button down collars with striped ties, worn with suits as well as blazers, but I think that's an Ivy League thing, isn't it? I'm no expert. The exception to this is the Mod subculture here in the UK who have worn button down collar shirts with slim knitted ties since the late 50s, early 60s, and you still see it today. My understanding is Mod fashion originally grew out of Ivy League inspired looks from the US linked to jazz music, with the addition of influences from 1960s continental Italian fashion. A kind of British Italo-Ivy sort of thing, with Jamaican & West Indian influence coming in too that got stronger over time

Overall not a fan; button downs comes from polo and just seems too tight of a look. OCBDs are casual shirts starting with the oxford cloth itself, they often have pockets which I am not a fan of when having a suit jacket. Pocket OCBD should let the button down be the solo feature of the shirt without adding a tie.

Button-down shirts indeed have their origins in polo, and for some, they might feel too tight or casual. Oxford cloth shirts definitely offer a more relaxed vibe. Thanks for sharing!
