Fashion Dreamer Reviews are Disappointing…

Fashion Dreamer launched with widespread, major disappointment from fans of Syn Sophia's previous IP, Style Savvy. Fans were expecting a game with more substance. Despite its rocky start, free updates were confirmed for the game, giving it some potential. I'm staying optimistic about the future of Fashion Dreamer, but am unsure about what this means for the future of high-budget fashion games.

I think a lot of people gave up way too early. I saw so many people basically speedrun through the game and get to the credits and be like “omg that’s it!?!” when there’s two whole other ranks after platinum that the game doesn’t even tell you about lol. There’s WAY more stuff to unlock and I feel like the credits were the point where I was really able to actually get started with my whole clothing brand lol. I also saw people complaining about there barely being any NPCs, like they didn’t realize you unlock more NPCs as you level up the ones you start with. The game isn’t perfect and I definitely have my gripes with it, but I feel like a lot of people don’t even bother giving it a chance to let it stand on its own merits. Despite the few frustrations I have I still racked up 100+ hours on it in less than two weeks so I think it’s safe to say I really like it lmao

I pre-ordered the game and had it arrive a couple days after launch. I just hit the credits tonight (I only put in a couple hours each night). And honestly I already feel I've gotten my money's worth and haven't even tapped what's likely in this game (higher npc levels, what appears to be multiple showrooms? higher brand levels, a 4th cocoon, I barely explored the photo egg, etc). I can easily see myself getting at least 50-60+ hours out of this game which is pretty rare for me. I do have some nitpicks but overall pretty pleased.

@@Otome_chan311 I agree! I know games are expensive now so I understand people’s anxieties about prices. For me though I’ve already gotten my money’s worth of enjoyment out of it for sure. I wouldn’t recommend the game to everyone, it depends on what you want out of your fashion games. But as a huge Style Savvy fan myself (thousands of hours across all of the games) I can safely say I love fashion dreamer as well, and its core concept.

@@TheNoSensei yup. I'm not super picky when it comes to girlier games simply because there's so few of them. I also picked up selfy collection a while back which is super budget, engrish and all, but I adore it. Fashion dreamer is fun, even if I can agree that maybe it's not as developed or polished as the old style savvy games. I'm glad we got *anything*. Makes me wonder what all the people complaining are playing? 🤔

I personally think people had way too high expectations from this game, since style savvy is something that was being produced by nintendo, and therefore had a much bigger budget considering there was 3 sequels to the initial game. I also enjoy this as a casual game a lot, but I do wish for many qol changes of course.

I got super sad at the harsh reception. Despite it being a game that would benefit from more (I’m not blind to the flaws), I like what’s there a lot and I feel like it hasn’t really gotten a fair shot.

I think it's pretty obvious that the devs were not ready to ship it upon release wich is a common thing in the industry nowadays. And the lack of story also seems to come from the idea that it isn't really a game as much as it is a brief thing to do in the train and such. I am a little frustrated not gonna lie. Mostly with how barren it feels and the hollowness of the lack of even the little story we got in the older games. I still play the old games but even with them they feel less cold because the story added context even once you finish it and get into the mode fashion dreamer basically is at from the start. Maybe they'll add that later on but now it just feels like a weird way to do things. Just the typical leaving players in the dark about update plans and such. A lot of it feels like it's being really mismanaged and it doesn't really seem to have a clear identity either. I mean even with these drip fed updates they feel so half hearted. Why couldn't they have a story to them? Why not make extra npcs for that you can only interact with and get their outfits after finishing the event? It all just feels weird. I love this game and dressing up especially as it helps me with my work as a designer to brainstorm. But it also feels so strange how the game is handled. We finally got color sorting at least. I wonder if we'll get style/patter sorting too sometime in the future. or a memory closet to find items u deleted in case u miss one you deleted for space. In general though it feels like they are struggling to find ppl to do assets for them because of how sparse and recycled the 3d models of the clothes are and how accessories like necklaces and wristbands as well as stuff like leg warmers as an extra category are missing. It really limits us and it is kinda weird that in a time where y2k is coming back, that leg warmers and inners are basically gone. I guess I'd probably assume it's an asset issue and a budget issue. but also, a downgrade for a new game is never gonna be good. Hear me out though. Maybe we'll get a new style boutique though that works off of this engine. It wouldn't be a new thing for them to recycle models and almost the entire fashion in 3ds titles for those sequels so who knows. maybe it's a tech demo. And sure that's a bit of a slimey move to make to test the waters and develop an engine, but I get why they might have to if their budget is very low. It doesn't seem like nintendo was sponsoring them for this. So I guess this was the best way to get a new style boutique made for the switch. It's still a pipe dream of course. But a dream is still a dream. And I hope it becomes a reality.

I really do enjoy the game, likely in part cause I had to move back in with my parents since that has forced to limit my real life fashion (forced to boymode). I end up recreating outfits I was wearing a while ago, or stuff in the style I want to wear and it has been really euphoric.

I’m thinking of getting the game because I’m contractually obligated to be fascinated with games with detailed character creation. But boy howdy, that genderlocked stuff and lack of body type diversity?? Here’s hoping those updates you mentioned will include more variety for spice of life reasons!

Letting games just suck at launch isn’t really great for anyone but the higher ups, fans are turned off and away from a game they might have really loved and that feeling of wasting money certainly doesn’t help and it’s just encouraging upper management to push more games out the door undercooked. Especially for smaller teams? It’s just a significantly smaller cyberpunk except the fan expectation is more self directed. I’ve sunk time into this game and it’s fun but everything is undercooked and the gameplay loop is really easy to burn out on, especially if you aren’t into room decoration. Edit: also, give me type A normal boots. I need military boots beyond that one pair

I do love Fashion Dreamer it's an unpolished diamond. With a little work it will be beautiful I just wish people would just give it time. Who knows maybe some DLC is in the future 😉. Stay positive❤.

I agree that the game will only get better...I just wish games would release in a more complete form, rather than be rushed to get out there. I understand why companies do it, but I'm disappointed.

A take from someone who wasn't comparing this to the Style Savvy DS games (and never played them) but DOES play Shining Nikki, Love Nikki, and Life Makeover (mobile fashion gacha games) Fashion Dreamer is lacking in a LOT. This is a 30$ game priced at 50$, the visuals are good for the Switch/Nintendo, but mediocre by all other metrics. The clothing options/combinations are limited, the character customization is limited, and the gameplay loop lacks variety and gets tiresome. With grind mechanics better served to a mobile game format than a fully fleshed out game (the bingo!) Solo play is next to impossible with how the game's E-point system works, as well. Clothing customization is limited exclusively to color choices despite the game showing off an extremely robust selection of patterns and images in logo creation. Very frustrating, if I'm being honest. It's almost like they're purposely showing off their lost protentional. It's worthwhile if you can grab it on a sale. I'd say 30-35$ is a good price. The one thing this game offers is the type B/masculine body which is almost entirely absent in any other fashion game I've played and was what I looked forward to the most. That said, I'm not even sure it was implemented in a proper way, but at this point I'll take what I can get. Men's fashion is so grossly overlooked and avoided, and I think simply not tying clothing to body types would have fixed this, but I'm glad to see they put any options for it there, at all.

Well, I’ve never paid attention to reviews. I had no expectations. I personally play in Solo Mode… because I’m a massive loner who likes to keep to myself.

You should try online mode. The game really shines there :)

The online mode doesn't involve communicating. You can see other people's muses or how they dressed the NPCs, and get clothes from them or their showrooms. There are also a lot more clothes options in the pop-up area.

As someone who HATES online multiplayer games due to playing games to escape people I definitely recommend trying out the online mode as it's basically a offline mode but a bit more do to imo.

I couldn’t really bring myself to keep playing unfortunately. I’ve never been into mobile games or games that are more “chill” ig so, it was my first Nintendo Eshop return unfortunately 😭

@@MagmaMonika Okay so, it’s a bit different. They say you’re not allowed to, but they always make an exception once. So, if you call in for a refund for the first time they’ll let you. It’s only once, though.

I agree with basically everything you said here. As for the question of whether we'll get another game, I think Fashion Dreamer likely *has* sufficiently made enough sales, especially in Japan, to warrant making a sequel. I was honestly expecting this game to end up like most other girl-oriented games and launch quietly, receive very little online buzz, and then die out. Fortunately, that has not been the case at all and there's tons of posts online indicating pretty high sales; at least from the Japanese market (who Marvelous and Syn Sophia are focused on). We're also getting two updates (In December and January) which is quite rare for games in general. So despite the negative reviews, I think it's all a good sign moving forward.

@@Akane1313 if they keep publishing with marvelous we'll be fine. The question is profitability. Localization isn't too pricey so if there's some sales it's easy to localize without really focusing on it.

I think with some updates the game could feel more like the fully realized game ppl were looking for... i really think ppl just need to give it time. and a lot of ppl who are disappointed in the game have admitted that the gameplay loop is really addictive so i hope these players stay long enough for updates and events. it looks like we will be getting a runaway feature eventually. the other feature im hoping for is to meet our friends in the game and take photos together where we get to decide on the poses and such... really hoping for the best for this game because i love dress up games and am sorta tired of playing gacha games to get my fix...

Personally the big feature I feel is missing is the abillity to save/manage outfits and share a catalog/backlog of outfits and photos within the game itself. We're stuck with whatever we got on currently and then the showroom and that's it. It'd be nice to be able to make photo albums for others to look at, for instance.

my brother bought this game but i ended up playing it the most, i love it. ik its not very inclusive (type b clothes vs type clothes, and body shape) but I love it and its so fun. I see it not being fun for someone who want to make the outfits more unique and be able to customize more. I only wish we could add bags but I still like it

I dont think its unfair to compare Style Svayy to This, snice its the same team that made both, they knew what their fans loved. I think what woulda helped was having a proper store front of sorts instead of the show room. Some more NPCs who visit it, and players as well can if you have gone to online mode. (like it stores your store and when you log back in you can see what items were 'sold' so to speak) BUT I think this also may be a sort of testing base for possible future items for a new engine for them, like DQ:B1 was clearly a test overall to see how players would react to a Minecraft but with Dragon quest attached. If Syn Sohpia plays it smart the sequel could be amazing. We did get the butterfly fashion update, and the next seems to have some wedding and Steam punk stuff coming.

People didn't seem to realize this game wasn't gonna have everything at launch that they would want. I'm sure the devs will still support the game at least, in order for their to be more content, and some adjustments and bug fixes. Plus, the game has high quality visuals for a game on switch, and the art is gorgeous. May not be much right now, but it'll get better than it already is, I just hope they'll expand the item limit for the inventory so that it doesn't stay at just 5000 items max. Too small of a limit for this game, plus a lot of the clothing items are the exact same, just different colors that players give them, which would be fine if there was more clothing items at launch, but there's barely items at launch, and it shows since everyone has at least 3 of that same item or more with different colors. Game really needs more to it tbh, but I still love the art in it.

I think this game is ok was top 10 in uk for couple weeks and feel people thought this game was gonna be style savvy which made zero sense but i feel the updates will save it ie changing npc an other muses hair & makeup (temporarily) more stuff an they get the style savvy ip at end of 2024 so i wonder if this was always meant to be a transitional game before next style savvy game 😀

sadly many review they compare it to style savvy 🥲 im having fun so far its perfect for me who dont really have much time because of work, yes the game feel lacking and they really need to update some stuff like maybe adding fashion chalenge the themes depend on event stuff irl like hallowen, valentine or season etc the winner will decide by voting and top 3 will be show to everyone...maybe idk 😆 i really hope they making style savvy too with the same style and graphic its really cute
