Omg yes circling back on the issue of giving credit to the wrong group for an “aesthetic, can you believe they credited Taylor Swift’s football player boyfriend with the “fade” haircut?!?!?!?! Like are we being serious right now, a haircut that black men have been donning for forever, is because of Kelce?!?! You were spot on with all of your icks, thank you for the backstory and thorough research as well 🍪

As someone who is white, but from a culture where our moms, aunties and big sisters dressed like "mob wives" (i'm eastern european), i think it's really silly that anyone calls that either culture or anything to do with appropriation. They're to make us feel sorry they married murderers?😅 Before the mob wife, we had slavic bimbo (same thing, just the beginning of fur coats getting in trend) and that one was insulting and a stereotype, but again, not cultural. Just a passing view of what is generationally inherited or popular in some countries (the usage of fur). Anyhow, amazing video. I was brought here via the yt algorithm, and I love the channel. Really fresh and amazing. ❤

I think it's important to give the mic to the marginalized group when it comes to determining if something is cultural appropriation or not. And from what I have seen, the majority of Natives are not happy with the collab. Pharrell and LV didn't even tag the Native designers they worked with. There was hardly any mention of them in press releases or subsequent pr after the show. Regardless of what we view is or isn't native american appropriation, I think we might all be able to see how Pharrell and LV could have given more props and limelight to the creatives behind so much of what we saw at the fashion show.

Appreciate your posts. However, LV is appropriating Indigenous prints and fabric. LV are known for doing this on more than one occasion - Kwele Tribe, Mexico, Indigenous prints, Palestinian keffiyeh to name a few. Prints are distinctive designs, meaning and symbols and have significant importance. While LV did hire Indigenous artists, LV & Pharell did not name them publicly and even wrote in the PR "inspired by Native American Culture" - hence tokenization. Having a few Indigenous faces doesn't dismiss appropriation. Just like having a gay friend doesn't mean you can't be homophobic. LVMH is a luxury brand - wearing luxury or patterns appropriated into luxury goods completely dismisses the historical and present-day oppression groups face for wearing their culture. By definition it's appropriation. If LV was collaborating authentically and bringing attention to the disparities of Indigenous people then it would be presenting a new relational avenue for reconciliation, but we know that would never happen in the pursuit of capitalism. Capitalism is about extraction for shareholder gain. Even if it looks pretty to some for a season, even if it is palatable because they have a few representatives of that group - really it's to tokenize them. Fashion sometimes perpetuates colonial tactics - the money doesn't benefit those communities. People should buy directly from Indigenous/Native, and not "Native inspired."
@lenav53658 ай бұрын
It was really disappointing to see the Native American designers who worked on pieces for the collection not even get tagged on single post. Louis Vuitton/LVMH has so much money, I'd like to see them invest in these communities in a REAL way in order to see this as an actual equitable collab. I have a feeling those designers were also disappointed in how things worked out but they just can't express it openly.

So amazing to see native indians so beautifully represented in Pharrell/LV show. I can't believe people would be so petty, jealous & scream appropriation when thats not even the case. Native indians are almost mute & invisible in their own country which prioritises everyone else in the DEI. Stunning show, so happy the brand is doing well 👏💯👑🏟💖 Also people need to get off their high horse about appropriation of aesthetics - its so self centered. Running people down for the mob wife aesthetic is just as crazy as running black women down for using light makeup, straightening & dying their hair blonde. Enough with the icks people, its bordering on narcissitic - lets accept each other whether you like how people look or not & be better people! 🙏🙏🙏

So, hooray for Pat's artistry but I am not a fan to see just regular people walking around looking like that. What also bothers me about the Mob wife aesthetic is that Mob crime is glorified in pop culture but in the black community it’s considered thuggish. I understand that it’s fun trend to dress in full glam but it’s still smacks of double standards and racism in our society.
