150 Fragrances deep into my fragrance journey, most of them niche, I would like to state that my journey was way too deep... I think people are way too esoteric about chosing a fragrance. Do you like it? Then you should wear it. Maybe get a 2nd opinion from your partner or friends. A lot of people don't even wear fragrances, so anything but the absolute best sellers will be unfamiliar to a lot of people. If you wear a fragrance at all (at least as a man) you are already way ahead of at least 70% of the population. Sure if you are in a bubble of fashionistas people might all wear fragrances and nerd out about it but the regular people don't. I don't subscribe to signature fragrances either. How often do you need to meet a person to get them to understand that it is you they smell? And what if they hate it? Especially at work or with a partner... Wear something appropriate for the temperature or adjust your sprays accordingly if you must wear tobacco vanille in the summer or mugler cologne in the winter. You need to get close to a person to smell their perfume with most perfumes. I dress like your everyday guy on the street but I wear exquisite fragrances. Except for my girlfriend and good friends i get close to pretty much no one notices or comments. I do have stuff that fills up a room. I just think that is not what a perfume should do in most occasions. You could go into the artisanal oud deep end. You could go into bespoke fragrances. You can explore arabian perfumery and attars. That would make what you wear more unique. But even things as popular as Aventus are something you rarely smell. As far as favourite scents go I really like Thirty Three by Ex Idolo, which is an amazing metallic rose and oud combo. But as I said, I have a lot of fragrances and I like to rotate them, so I would just suggest trying out perfume, trying to understand the craftsmanship behind them and if you love something to not overthink it.

This 100%, fantastic comment and i subscribe to this totally, also a thing i'd like to add, if you like some designer fragrances just go for it, don't snob them just because they're designers at the end of the day if you like it that's all that matters, and besides noses desiging those are still some of the best in the industry that also work on niche ones
@silinsii7924

Being a guy in the same boat as you, yeah, we did go too deep. People make too big of a deal choosing what fragrance they wear, and try to compare a fragrance that they like, according to how popular it is. If it's too popular then they think its "basic" and "smells bad", but like you said, the majority of the population doesn't even wear perfumery on the daily, so wearing a fragrance at all is already a step above others. In my opinion, it's as simple as sample, sample, sample. Just find what you truly like and buy it. Other people's opinions on what's "basic" or "popular" shouldn't hinder what fragrance you wear or enjoy. Just enjoy the olfactory experience and leave it at that!

Another thing to keep in mind is, some people wear fragrances in order to "appeal" or be "attractive" to others, not necessarily to be "unique". Although people rag on Dior Savage and other designer fragrances the truth is they are mass appealing and most people like the smell. For me I like to wear fragrances that most people will generally enjoy but is still sort of a niche. Remember that most people don't wear fragrances so wearing one is already a step ahead.

I've always found every "dark" fragrances, like the ones he's into, as gross to most people, they can come off as a rotting wood smell, or grandpa aftershave vibe. Unfortunately it goes both ways 😅 yes some areas people know certain fragrances because they are worn often by many people, but other areas know nothing about these popular fragrances and you can make a killing with them. I happen to live in an area unfamiliar with dior sauvage and get showered with compliments when I wear it. Also, you have to consider that a popular fragrance is popular for a reason. Often times people don’t care that they’ve smelled it on others, they’d love that scent on just about anyone if it’s good enough. I had a woman say she bought it for her husband and her friends were all raving about it with her after catching a whiff off me. So even though I was using a fragrance owned by her husband, she was still all over the scent.

True, niche niche fragrances are not really to mass appeal. It is rather something that is an unique/artistic experience for yourself and also a memorable distinct smell that will stick to peoples brains more than a basic but also good smell. It is not mass appealing but it is so much to explore that it is a good chance that you will find something personal that you like more than the basic safe fragrances.

Fragrance, like fashion, has one rule: If you love it, wear it. The problem is most people get trapped by ideas about what others think, what they're supposed to do, or just get lost trying to be something they are not. Unlearning all of that, and truly listening to your tastes, is much harder than doing what someone else tells you.

i'm a woman and i personally base my fragrance choices on mood or how i want to feel that day, and the core of my personality. and of course on what my nose likes. that's why my every day scents are usually sweet, fruity, floral, not too strong or overbearing and a little playful. i genuinely love fruity scents and want to come across as approachable. but sometimes i wear something a little louder and more seductive, darker, when you just want to feel sexy and confident! and when i want to stand out or feel a bit moody, i have that one fragrance that doesn't really smell typical to me, but it makes sense to wear it in that mood. so yeah, i have a few of them, but each of them has something special that stands out and makes me feel different. i try to keep my collection small tho, only buying what i truly truly love and see myself wearing. i'm looking forward to finding more scents since i'm new to this whole world of fragrances. it's been an exciting journey so far!

Nah, fragrance has nothing to do with what you wear. It is a completely different world which has more to do with your character, what you are doing, if you are a father or a child, if you are going to school or if you work. If you are on a date or with your friends. If you are doing sports or going to bed at night. If you just wanna feel fresh. That has nothing to do with a T-Shirt man.

Nice vid, I can appreciate your takes here, and it's cool to see a different and more thoughtful perspective on how fragrances fit into one's image etc. Since your last vid on this subject, I've dropped a few grand on fragrances and have a collection with 50+ bottles in it and a bunch of decants. I was really surprised by Black Afgano, since I had tried 4 other fragrances from the perfumer and they were super synthetic to my nose. I really didn't think I would vibe with BA, but found it to have an interesting evolution throughout time on the skin. *RE: Signature Scents:* I've noticed that a lot of collectors don't really care about having one. I suspect this is because the size of their collections are so large that they can more easily select a fragrance for a mood/occasion, so it's hard to have a scent to associate them with. The idea of having a scent for each occasion is goofy, and I believe is a function of collectors finding nails when wielding an increasingly large hammer. Instead, much like you allude to with styles, it seems like they can form a "signature" by adopting a profile. So for you, that would be "darker" fragrances, but for me, a lot of my fragrances trend towards "freshness" in some way because I find other stuff to become stuffy over time. While there is the idea that I can match my fragrance to the vibe I'm going for, my love for citrus probably presents too much energy, so I guess I'll need to become more extroverted to match my tastes 🙃 At the same time, I personally find my collection is probably too large, so I usually just throw something that I already enjoy like Aventus if I need to dash out the door. I think the solution to this would be to partition my collection into small subsets for each month, so that I can have less decision paralysis and more time to enjoy parts of my collection. *RE: Asking your friends about fragrances:* I suspect that is very dependent on your location. In larger cities with more interests and "culture", it's probably easier to find these people, but I find that most people living in the Midwest are probably just wearing something Sauvage if they are "into fragrances". Funnily enough, one of the most interesting people related to fragrances that I personally know doesn't actually really own any, but has an open mind and strange tastes. Hopefully I can find him something soon 😅 *RE: Brands I Recommend:* • *Creed* : this is probably the most mainstream "niche" for guys, but it still passes imo because so few dudes wear fragrances outside of Sauvage/1 Million/Eros. Most of the entire line isn't groundbreaking, but is super airy and is very difficult to be bothersome. It's a perfect background scent that doesn't distract, but rather adds to you. My favorite so far has been Royal Water, as it is a perfectly comfortable, creamy, refreshing scent that I feel would not be out of place in most occasions. (I am biased, owning most of their line.) • *ATH* : This perfumer is very bombastic and loud with his fragrances, and many probably know him by his KZbin channel where he does reviews. Some fragrance eliteists hold the opinion that his work is too simple or based around designer profiles, but I find that his blending is usually very pleasant. His favorite fragrance of mine is Supernova. It truly just feels like a juicier, zestier, version of Aventus and is worthy of hype. • *Argos* : a lot of their lineup is based around designer profiles, but what makes me recommend them is the immaculate blending. My favorite is Triumph of Bacchus, which is what I would consider the mega evolution of Red Tobacco: sweetness and fruitiness are added to make the tobacco element more palatable. I was also impressed by Danaë because of its blend, but it smelled a lot "men's cologne" to me which I would never see myself wearing (this is my preference, not a dig at people who like this genre). • *Savoir Faire* : this seems more like a "hip" brand to me, but I can appreciate Soul Café which evokes a strange sense of nostalgia. That and Whiskey Rose both come off a little synthetic to me, but they are interesting and worth getting your nose on. *P.S.* I will reiterate a point in my last post on buying through the secondhand/grey market. DO IT. FIGURE IT OUT. There are so many people that impulse purchase their fragrances and then want to sell them off to recoup their losses. Go on FB groups or Reddit and you will save so much money. Of course, there is risk, but if you do your research on sellers (verifying they aren't scammers) and/or buy from reputed sellers, you're _very_ unlikely to be scammed. To give you an idea of why it's necessary, look at the MSRP of Creed: ~$500/100ml. On the secondhand market, most newer batches range from $150-200/100ml. For something like Sauvage Elixir, the savings are comparable: $180/60ml at retail vs $90-120/60ml.

With fragrances, just as with everything else in life, you shouldn't fall into extremes. Sure, even tho i don't have as many fragrances as other enthusiasts, i still have more then usual (around 35) so from that POV i also fell into the extreme. I like to have casual, mass appealing fragrances like Versace, Dior Sauvage, Paco Rabanne aswell as darker scents like Serge Lutens, Encre Noire, Montale/Mancera's. I want to have a balanced "wardrobe" of scents to wear depending on the mood, weather, occasion, encounters etc. I don't want to come across as judging or atacking anyone, but i feel like many people want to "be different" for the sake of it and end up appearing like clowns. If you wear certain clothing, certain style / behaviour because thats your personality then sweet! But don't force trying to be "cool" by not being "cool" couse then you are a try-hard and you base your personality on a facade of trying to appear different. Be yourself and don't try to be something else. Best regards.

About Inexcusable Evil. Bought it as a joke for my bf but ended up liking it. I grew up in rural Romania with my grandpa being a ranger. They went hunting a lot. This smell reminds me of hunting. The smell of blood and iodine.. I also used to clean the gun barrel and play with gunpowder sprinkling it on top of the stove like some kind of war fairy 😂. Keep in mind that Romanians sacrifice their animals in their yard, so the smell of blood, burnt hair because we burn the pigs after killing them..and iodine and wet concrete is very normal to us. This reminds me of grandpa ❤

I'm a huge fan of Francesca Bianchi and own 3 of her scents (Etruscan Water, Under My Skin, and Encounters). Her scents have such a seductive and sexy vibe but most of them also have deep animalic notes that you just don't typically get from designer stuff. They're also extrait du parfum which means they have strong lasting power. Worth every penny imo

i was having struggling the last year trying to find a fragrance that fit me. i can't get a good vibe for a fragrance in a perfume store surrounded by conflicting scents but tried it at a few places anyway. i ordered samples of more expensive brands so i didn't have to bust out a wad of cash on what would ultimately be a failure. i didn't wanna try scentbird or monthly boxes because i couldn't find one without shady shit going on. eventually i found one i loved that smelled amazing and fit me really well, but turns out you can't get it in the US anymore and it's $600 a bottle. rip to YSL Babycat. so i settled for Coffee & Whiskey from Bath and Body Works. normally a place i hate shopping at but man i'm in love with the smell.

When you talked about fragrances that smell like childhood, Polo Black is the one that comes to mind. My dad wore it to work every day until he decided that perfume wasn’t his thing. I inherited what was left of his collection at the tender age of 11. As the wise man that he was, he envisioned that I would grow into them eventually. He’s 50 now; that was 10 years ago. I have since added fragrances like Eros, Bottled Night, D&G Light Blue (gift from aunt overseas), and a local perfumery’s take on Aventus. But something about Polo Black made me profoundly happy when I finally reunited with it just recently.

Im a sucker for Idyllwild by Ineke. This fragrance is absolutely wonderful. I spend my time trying to find fragrances that remind me of my childhood in the redwoods, and this is one of the best I have found. Its a woody, green, and slightly spicy scent, which has a top note of rhubarb and grapefruit. I think the rhubarb is one of the most alluring parts of this scent as its not something I find too often. I really think its such a great blend as the citrus in the top gives way to the cypress and fir in the body with the more deep woody notes at the heart. I think anyone who enjoys woody nature focused scents should give this a try. I wear a lot of earth tones and live in a place with a lot of trees, but even if I move, I cant imagine not continuing to wear this. It does falter in the winter months as it needs a little more heat to stand out as much, but that can be nice as it can be more subtle. Its not an overpowering smell, but it has a character that I havent been able to find in much else. Im biased because its everything I could want in a scent, but again, if you even think you might like foresty scents, this is a good bet. The company is also based in San Francisco which is super tight.

I love Pernoire, a swiss niche brand. I got their discovery set, and i def recommend Mansa (which i bought later), Masar, Vitias, Amoral and Naki. All these scents have their own personality, and thats what the brand aims for. And they're all Extrait De Parfum, so they're super long lasting, without a huge sillage/projection (which I prefer) I think it was Damien Broderick (the british GRWM, "Its Chewsday, so lets get dressed" guy) who said that fragrance should be discovered, not announced. But I recommend trying Pernoires discovery set, and seeing if you like some of their creations.

If you’re going to get edgy or daring fragrances with a higher price point, try something like Bortnikoff or Areej Le Dore. Prin & Strangers parfumerie have a lot of affordable offerings as well that fall into that “ultra-niche” category. Also don’t be afraid to branch out beyond the atomizer and pick up some attars. You can get some really high quality stuff for the same price you’d drop on those niche bottles. Exploring notes alone will also give you something to find your identity with, with your scent. Oudh oil has enough variety in its smell permitted you’re buying natural oil that will keep you busy longer than you’ll be alive. Oud can smell like anything, all depending on its origin, distillation process, etc. Musks from various animals can also have heavily varying scents from one another. Ambergris in particular can go from smelling like fresh excrement by the greenest water in Galveston, TX to having sweet nuances and almost mimicking something like white musk. Deer musk can have the same depth as well. If you’re gonna be daring, go out and experience these natural elements of perfumery that walked so these half witted edgy perfume brands could run

I’ve always kinda associated fragances w/ the personality of the person wearing them and less w/ their fit. I tend to wear frangances that are more citrus and marine forward despite wearing mostly blacks. I guess for most it usually aligns since personal stylebis a reflection of the individuals identity but idk if scent and outfit necessarily has to be a reflection of the same aspect? It is a great starting point tho I think

Definitely an elevated video. Most guys have to be convinced just to care enough to want to put in the effort to smell good by using fragrances. I tend to gravitate towards whatever scents I like to smell continually throughout the day as opposed to what I am wearing. Perhaps this is a new way to consider fragrances instead of the occasion and whatever I "feel like" wearing. I have not explored niche very much yet (still a noob to the fragrance game) but I tend to gravitate towards Parfums De Marly Layton, Spicebomb, Angel's Share and Baccarat Rouge 540 I'm definitely all over the place

What a refreshing video, you are definitely sharing a humble and honest opinion, that invites to a discussion about cool ideas and community. I personally think fragrances have to be used carefully and wisely (because they cost money and you have to think were and when to waste your precious dollars to smell for the right people) I used common/commercial fragrances for trivial activities, but save my loved niche ones to share with friends, at events or special moments, when you dress appropriately for the boost of the performance perfume. My personal favorites: A Anarchist - Toskovat, Dark - Neandertal, Sacreste - Laborattorio Olfativo. Keep this alive man, peace.

I started my journey into niche fragrance coming over from specialty coffee. With coffee you must train your palate and your nose. I have only been into niche perfumery for around 4/5 months, and have been loving it so far. Some of my favorites so far have been Amouage Royal Tobacco, Francesca Blanchi The Lover’s Tale, and Jovoy Psychedelique. Finding unique and special fragrances that fit both my style and attitude has been so much fun. It can be a very expensive and spiraling rabbit hole of a hobby, but it’s genuinely fascinating and fun. Standout/uncommon fragrances that I’d say are great if you can pull them off: Nasomatto Black Afgano, Papillon Salome, Orto Parisi Stercus. Finding something challenging but not so crazy out there that you’ll offend others is fun. 🥹

The first step is to actually stop listening to other people. Just wear what you like because you like it, not because of the opinion of the masses. Ironically enough, *not* wearing something just because everyone else does also fails this criteria, because you're just going by the flow but in reverse. No... You go orthogonal. No "ohhh that's overrated and overhyped", no "ohhh that's weird and unpopular", no "ohhh this smells like evil ex boyfriend/girlfriend" - you do you. You like Sauvage? Wear it! You like Kouros? Wear it! People will bitch, of course - that's what they do - regardless of what.

Designer fragrances don't particularly suck, only the most popular ones can make you smell quite "boring". (that applies to niche scents as well, since some of them are as popular as designer scents). But your signature scent shouldn't necessarily fall into niche fragrances, as they're more expensive and a bit more difficult to explore. Remember that most people don't even wear fragrances at all :P

I agree. Niche doesn’t equate quality or superiority or uniqueness too. Sometimes, I hate sampling unknown brands thinking they are special but they aren’t. In fact their notes are usually just linear without too much depth on it. There are highly regarded designer perfumes too aside from being mass appealing. Anyway, it’s just a matter of smell. ;)

@@annparas2645 It's considered that they're made of higher quality ingedients, but even then finding the right scent is quite exhausting since your nose just stops working after sniffing a certain amount, that's why a lot of people rely on fragrance reviewers and just try out the fragrances based on the already given list.

I’ve only found one (possibly) niche fragrance company that has more than one scent I like. I enjoy Morning Chess and Dirty Velvet from Vilhelm Parfumerie. I can thank the British menswear poet Tiktok guy for that. Morning Chess is more fresh and citrussy while Dirty Velvet is exactly what it sounds like, sort of bittersweet. It reminds me of the set design of some 60s/70s films, like Boorman’s Point Blank. I also like Sanctuary’s Right Whale scent, which is fresh and makes me think of a beach, clear water. I also recently picked up DS & Durga’s Pistachio which I enjoy because it reminds me of my childhood. I wouldn’t say it smells like pistachios, but I like it nonetheless. It’s more of a vanilla scent in my opinion. VERY STRONG. I only use one spray and it’s still just shy of overwhelming, so I use it only occasionally. Less niche, I enjoy Creed’s Green Irish Tweed, which smells like cut grass at first but eases down into a more tolerable version of that. Also I’m sorry, I like Dior Sauvage, but I only get the $40 deodorant spray, I’m not paying a ton for the actual cologne since the deodorant lasts all day anyway.
