FAST 5 | 2019 Mercedes C300 Coupe - More Than Just a Snappy Dresser

The BMW 3 Series has been the benchmark of this segment since before I was born, and for good reason. It's an incredible little car. But the current generation left the door open for competitors to make a name for themselves, and that's exactly what Mercedes did with their current C Class. The 2019 C300 gets a subtle refresh and sharpens things up on the interior; most notably with the infotainment screen. It was no surprise to me that the C Class was the most luxurious and handsome variant in the segment, but what did surprise me was the way the C300 drove. This is the entry-level C Class and it still pumps out close to 250 hp and over 270 lb ft of torque. A snappy 9-speed transmission and an adept 4Matic AWD system makes good use of that power. The turbos spool hard and quick to peak torque at 1300 rpm. In basic English this thing feels quick, especially for the entry level C.
Power and delivery was a pleasant surprise, but it wasn't until I started pitching this C300 into some corners that I was really floored with the composure of this thing. It behaved like a proper sports car. The suspension stayed level and planted when in sport mode, and then when I wanted to dial it back, comfort mode was a smooth and supple ride.
Ultimately I'm very impressed with the C300, and if I were to have one I'd have the coupe since it's so good looking!

Just test drove it and loved it. I don't care about AI per se except when safety is concern. It should detect when you sway and bring you back in to your lane, etc. Or, pilot assist would be nice. But, the performance is AMAZING. It's like driving a 6 cylinder car.

I disagree, this does not feel like a 6 cylinder at all. Ironically, my commute care is a TDI Beetle. It's a 1.9 liter turbo and has way more kick. To be fair, curb weight is lower, but their is a distinct difference proving you don't have to be AMG tuned. Rumor has it in Europe the C300 comes in Diesel and that it's a performance boost, so maybe the fuel system is the reason why the US version doesn't impress with speed and acceleration.

In that comparison I'd go 330 but if you want to look above base I'd look at the c43 AMG!

I own this vehicle and have to say, this review was very generous. The car is stylish and dare I say sporty, but only in looks. Prior to this car, I had a 6 cylinder Accord Coupe, and I'll just say when it came to lane takeover and passing ability, I was completely confident. This car, is all looks, I would not attempt to pass on a single lane road, results could be deadly. The handling of this car is impressive and I'd give high marks in most area's but from an engine perspective, it's heartless. It's been 15 years since a 4 cylinder vehicle was my primary car and I'll just close by saying, this car may be a beast in the 4 cylinder class, but for the money, this should have been a 6 cylinder car. Personally, I would not recommend the C300. On the flip the C43 may be too much car adding 150 hp. This is why the C300 should have been the non turbo version of the C43.
