American Goulash aka Succotash
1 medium onion diced
1 pound hamburger
2 cloves of garlic chopped
1 bell pepper diced
1 14 oz can tomato sauce
2 14 oz cans of diced tomatoes
2 cups of beef stock
½ tsp seasoned salt
1 ½ tsp Italian seasoning
½ tsp smoked paprika
1 bay leaf
1 ½ cups dry macaroni noodles
Start to brown the burger in the pan and once it starts to break apart add the garlic, onion and bell pepper, stir well. Then add the rest of the ingredients except the pasta and bring the mixture to a slow boil. Boil 25 minutes and then add the pasta. It takes about 25 minutes boiling to cook the pasta through but remember to stir the pot frequently because the dry pasta will stick to the bottom of the pot.
You can serve this with cheese if desired.

I’ve been making goulash for about 70 years bc that was the first dish I learned to prepare at the age of 18 when I got married. I’m 88 now and still make it in smaller portions just for myself. I still like it very much.

I think your meat sauce in the American Goulash would be very versatile. Some of my Grandchildren love spaghetti and others rice or couscous. I would make up a big batch of meat sauce and add the appropriate carbohydrate at serving time. For real comfort food some of my family love mashed potato’s which would also go well. I’m sure Thespis sauce freezes like a dream in appropriate size containers. Thank you for the recipe.

15:02 Love your videos Colleen! I grew up on the Hungarian style of goulash with potatoes instead of pasta but I much prefer American goulash. Question for you…the written recipe doesn’t mention the soy sauce or Worcestershire sauce so I just wanted to double check the amount with you. If you would be so kind… P.S. if you put a damp paper towel or washcloth under your plastic cutting board it won’t slide around on your counter. And using the blunt edge of your knife to scrape things from the cutting board into the pot will save the sharpness of the blade edge. 😊

Hi Colleen. I made this today, and it's very good. But when I watched your video I see that you added soya sauce, which is not listed in the ingredients list. So I am wondering what difference the soya sauce makes? Should I add it after the fact? I probably won't, this time, but may try it next time (and there will be a next time!). I live alone since my husband went to heaven, so a big pot of goulash isn't something I can eat all on my own right away. So I will freeze one-serving bags tomorrow, and will enjoy it over the next while. Thank you, dear friend, for sharing this recipe with us. First, I don't have any seasoned salt, will it affect the flavor much if I just use regular salt, and secondly in the video you mentioned you add soy sauce or worcestershire sauce, but either one is not listed in your printed recipe. Hi Colleen! Another great dish I had forgotton about! My grandmother always knew when to make us comfort. Thanks for a great tutorial and for sharing. I finally found a recipe I had been searching for, for years she also made. Pastina with egg and cheese. Have you made this? Thanks for spreading your joy 😊

I’m going to try this. I made some last week from a different recipe, but when I tasted it, it was too tart with the tomato paste. I added a little sugar to cut the acid. Unfortunately, that little bit didn’t make a difference so I added a little more. That made it too sweet. Sigh.

You made yours with Italian seasonings, but I make mine with chili/Mexican seasonings. I'm guessing that goulash is one of those recipes that have thousands of variations.

I agree Debi, I'm sure that each family who makes it has their own style of making it. Thanks for watching, Colleen

My paternal grandmother used to make something she called Goulash, but it is nothing like this or Hungarian Goulash. It took me many years to figure out what my family had passed mother to mother down the generations. I finally ran into Czech Goulash. I recommend if you ever decide to try something different. My maternal grandmother on the other hand, made this dish. I do love it, though, not with macaroni, instead boiled potatoes.

Ahh, true goulash as it has paprika in it. Just ask Uncle Felix (Christmas in Connecticut (1945)) as he adds paprika to Irish Stew and declares that it's now goulash. 😂😂😂

The acid in tomatoes and tomato sauce does not go well in a plastic bowl you should have used stainless steel.
