I agree a lot of people think contractions make the speech terrible. There also tend to think it is just Americans that do but it is not true. It is not just Americans that use reductions. There are three countries in the world that are considered to be an English speaking country in the sense that English is their first language and that is North American, the UK and Australian and each one of these countries uses reductions. The rest of the countries all speak English but English is not their first language. British kzbin.info/www/bejne/nHeuZYFjapJgapY Australian kzbin.info/www/bejne/rl61gqh_jZ2of5I

Hi Rachel, could you please make a video on the pronunciation of the L+S consonant cluster, I'm really struggling to pronounce the name "Elsa" and the word "else" PLS HELP!!!1
@thomasrad52024 жыл бұрын
Hi there, native speaker here! The L + S do not combine. The difference is that there is no "a" sound in the word "else". Try pronouncing the syllable "El" and then imagine you are making it plural by adding an "s" sound on the end. Remember that "s" can be pronounced without the need to attach a consonant to it! If it sounds like you are hissing sound then you are on the right track!) If your native language does not often pronounce consonants on their own (without being followed by a vowel) then this may be difficult for you, I recommend to listen to various sound clips on google until you are comfortable. Good luck!
@juanpabloforerosanchez17384 жыл бұрын
@@thomasrad5202 Thanks Thomas, I'm aware of the pronunciation of else (els) and the name Elsa (ˈelsə). I'm just not sure of how to make the change with your tongue from a lingualveolar consonant (t, l, n, d) to the s since these are made by placing the tip of your tongue up . Is the l pronounced as usual and then you put the tip down for the s? . Does the blade go up for the l while the tip stays down for the s to make it easier? Those are my concerns. Rachel has explained how to pronounce consonant clusters like ts, ns and even ls for the sentence "we'll see". I'm still unsure of how to make the L+S change. I'm fixing a lisp I had before, and now I can create an accurate s sound so these consonant clusters are kinda new for me, though they exist in Spanish as well. Sorry for the long text.
@thomasrad52024 жыл бұрын
juanpa Ah yes, that makes sense. The tongue position for the "L" in else is called a dark L, (www.callearning.com/wp-content/uploads/pronounce-letter-L.jpg) as it follows a vowel as opposed to coming before a vowel. Maintain that tongue position and then loosen up slightly to create a gap for air to slide (by moving into the "S" tongue position) when completing the word. This is my best guess.
@juanpabloforerosanchez17384 жыл бұрын
@@thomasrad5202 Yeah I completely agree, it feels much more comforable to make a dark l before the s Thank you so much for the help

This gives me insight into how non native English speakers have trouble picking up our language. I assume reductions exist in most languages, which would make it difficult for Americans to learn foreign languages. Apparently some professions have their own reductions too. Ever listen to recordings of conversations between pilots, or between pilots and air traffic controllers? This native speaker of English from Indiana is lucky to understand more than a third of the words ! !

I don't know where it comes from but when I listen or read English I understand words which I don't remember when I try to speak. Today I watched on KZbin videos of a man who is a pilot of Boeing 747. I'm a native English speaker and I had no idea I did that hahaha. In fact when she said becuzawuza at the beginning I burst out laughing, but it was totally accurate. Awesome video. This is absolutely correct and what he said about "over formal" or "difficult to understand" is true. If people pronounced "And in the" anyway other then "enintha" I'd probably think they were being too formal.

I doubt that I will have a reply to my comment I just wrote, but can you as a native speaker tell if I'm right, when I think I hear "godda" instead of "gotta"? Not everyone did that clearly, but with a between 't' and 'd'. Or am I, as a Swedish idiom goes, "out biking" 😂? Meaning thinking completely wrongly. Where we make "Ute och cyklar" "Uteo cyklar" (The 'e' is pronuonced in both cases)
@boots33723 жыл бұрын
@@annabackman3028 Hi Anna, It's closer to "Godda" than it is to "Gotta". I'm repeatedly saying "Gotta" to myself, and if I slow it down (and it's very subtle) I hear "God-ta". The difference between the 'd' and the 't' sound is very small, but I hear it. The 'a' sound is hardly audible.
