That is an awesome idea. It would be easy to put another layer over the places where you have gaps i would think. I'll bet the Spring time sun would heat that so warm that you could take off your jacket, gloves and hats etc without any other source of heat other than solar if everything was sealed up well. Very interesting.

Far North Bushcraft And Survival Like you said. It is similar in concept to your video with the clear plastic tarp teamed with the Mylar sheet backing- radiant heat with minimal fuel consumption, portability, low cost, and Vehicle EDC. Clarification, thermodynamic similarity, not structural.

Thanks for the video. When I worked in shipping, we had a machine that used very large rolls of plastic rap. What is nice about plastic rap is when it get warm it shrinks and will get rid of lose gaps. When we moved last you can buy these smaller rolls 5 inches and they had a handle so you could walk around your furniture and plastic rap it, when the movers came they just picked up a dresser draws with everything in it and put it in the truck. They where happy we did it this way less trips for them and no draws sliding out and causing problems. Now we just need a roll of plastic rap with a fiber mesh on a dispensing handle to put in the pack.

A couple of things I gleaned from this video. First: it is always good to keep thinking. Let your mind try to explore and work through problems. This seems to work especially well while you are going about more mundane everyday tasks such as cleaning, etc. Secondly: after you have thought through an idea, don't just let it drop. Put it to the test. See if it will actually work. Don't be afraid to fail. You learn more through your failures than you do from your successes, and successes will never be possible if you are paralyzed by fear of failing.

Awesome idea for using saran wrap. Refletix would be useful too. Just a little correction I'd like to mention ... it was the Native People who used the teepee. If you are going to experiment with plastic for shelter covering you should try using clear plastic poly. It's heavier and takes up more space than plastic wrap but you can make a shelter with it very quickly and it's very durable. I've used it to make several tents over the years and they work great!
@suzywong8237 жыл бұрын
Get a huge clear dropcloth and cut out a semi-circle. You can wrap that around the frame very quickly. The thicker the plastic the more durable, of course.

I ran across this idea on another channel and love it! He suggested using industrial cling wrap. I came up with so many visions of possible shelters made with this stuff and it has huge lashing capabilities as it is amazingly strong when twisted into a rope. I used the wrap binding our purchased wood at a campsite one year as I forgot my guy lines for my tent...worked great! And to be able to use it as emergency water proof coverings for your feet and gloves! Thanks for the video!
@arturasmecionis23377 жыл бұрын
good one. i will consider this idea for mini green house in the garden. for that i wouldn't join top ends. Just keep four sticks in the ground, wrap them around and put some transparent lid on top which could be used for ventilation. the lid could be made from four sticks joined into a square and wrapped with same stuff. thanks for this idea. Just keep doing what you do!

If you look into teepee design you will find that the bottom and the very top are supposed to stay open, to allow for circulation when you put your fire in the center. I like teepees, they are strong and they enable you to stand up inside.

very nice for security reasons for sure. out of the wind is always a plus too. also be a good way to collect water from condensation built up on the inside if need be. leather is still used on teepees because it breathes. plastic doesn't breathe but it awesome for a short term shelter.

A very interesting concept Lars. Great job, especially on your first time doing it. It looks like one would get better with a little practice. That stuff is very strong and would work well, I am sure in dry powdery snow conditions, or even heaver snow due to the sharp angle of the tipee. The Plains Indians built them for the extreme cold and winds of the western states, of which many places on the western Praire were a mile in elevation and very cold. Very inventive thinking Lars. Great video. Your daughter is learning fast from daddy.

I use normal kitchen strength film as a disposable windscreen cover as we get hard frost but rarely snow - works great. After watching your video Lars I see office supply companies sell double thickness film in 40cm [16inch] widths for commercial use capable of wrapping pallets of building bricks ... I think you made a great discovery as you could twist it as rope too so only need the film and a good knife to build a shelter
@eddywiggins6207 жыл бұрын
nice idea Lars. Try pallet wrap ,as it is stronger than normal household cling film. I made a temporary shelter to work on a forktruck outside at a customers several years ago. It worked well for stopping the rain and the odd stray golf ball from the golf course near it . only thing is it likes to attract dust and bits . It might be cold at night time though

If you had one of those ponchos (you know the ones that are in every crappy emergency kit you can buy) you could use the head hole to put the poles up through and then have it spread out from there (it could wear the hood). Chances are that the poncho wouldn't be long enough to be really worth a damn, but it could make a nice top of the tepee then just kind of fluff in forest debris to fill the lower reaches. Love your stuff.

Reminds me a lot of Far North Bushcraft episode where he makes an emergency shelter with his wife using almost the same materials.. which btw is not a complaint to what Lars is showing. As the idea behind this and Bushcrafts episodes is most likely: use any material available to make a weather- and windproof shelter. Survival is using whatever it takes to make you survive in Nature.
@researcherextraordinaire88677 жыл бұрын
Wider rolls of clear plastic shrink wrap used for shipping are available and the material is very strong. Its too bad there isn't an easy way to skirt the inside face of the teepee frame with clear plastic so there would be a double wall of plastic with dead air space in between. This would help keep the inside of the teepee warmer at night.
@ianlevine2737 жыл бұрын

Great idea! I like the fact that you record an experiment. It stimulates ideas while watching you create it. This solution reminds me of the Mors Kochanski super shelter that uses a fire or the sun to create a greenhouse effect inside, while the fire is outside; it also uses a reflective emergency blanket to reflect more heat back into the shelter. Regarding the top, a long stick with a branch cut off near the end passing through the roll, may let you reach higher to close the top. Cheers.

'Romance and realism"...it reminds me of a particularly apt definition of 'adventure': "Someone else in deep stuff a long way away" Here in America we often use 'Saran Wrap' as a general term for household cling film, after one of the main producers. I really like this idea for more than just survival tactics. I would use this at some of the festivals I go to. This would make a great public tent for getting out of the wind, as its totally public, visually at least.. Though, considering that all the festivals I go to are predominantly attended by stoners, I'm probably going to have to layer it at least three times and do some regular maintenance. I can see this also being cool at night at you can sleep under the stars and still be protected from the elements.

Cling wrap. That's right. There is a larger, meter wide, version called "Packing wrap" for binding together boxes or material on shipping pallets. That comes on a spool with handles. There is a lot of tipi tutorials on the web. Canvas or buffalo hide (buffalo are nearly extinct so a hide costs quite alot). Tipis work best on the plains because the tribes had to bring the poles with them (few trees on the plains), also the Tipi is wind resistant. People make tarp tipis by cutting a tarp into a conical shape from the rectangular tarps. Try small linked chain and snap links. Lie the chain on the ground flat in a line then pile the poles on top. Close the chain with a snap link tightly around the poles then hoist upright and spread the poles to make the base. Native tipis are three and four meters tall. The canvas has to be tied off before the poles are raised then the material is brought around and tied off. There is horizontal ribs in some tribes tipis that resist side loads from wind and gives a place to hang items off the ground. The entrance faces south in winter and north in summer to use solar gain or for shade. The tipi has a stiff flap the can be moved from one side to another to keep rain out the top or prevent strong winds from pushing cooking fire smoke down into the tent. Summer time the cook fire is ofcourse outside. Maybe try a wickiup next? That is bows bent over to make a round roof.

Brilliant idea. Experimentation like this is the essence of pure science - keep it up. I suggest using double glazing for a more durable refuge - i.e. a teepee within a teepee. Triple glazing would be even more AWESOME with staggered entrances opposite to the prevailing wind.
@SurvivalRussia7 жыл бұрын
Thank you :) Yes, I have been thinking about that actually :)
@mpmansell7 жыл бұрын
I'd been thinking of double 'glazing' more as insulation and to create an airgap between the inner and outer and would be curious if this would help reduce condensation. Perhaps leaving the inner 'open' top and bottom to allow some air flow would help (then the triple glaze would be handy :D What is also interesting is the ability to 'laminate' mylar space film in place, while being able to cut it to shape to maximise its area.
@KnolltopFarms7 жыл бұрын
it absolutely would reduce condensation due to temperature differential, and depending upon conditions you could vary the size of the vent at the top, as well as the door size. I think it would be too warm on many days of the year, but nights would be nice...also, that could be a good way of keeping you outside and working instead of inside being lazy, LOL!
@spammerwhammer55267 жыл бұрын
OK but let's not lose sight of your original intent. I have been reading many comments. A camel is the result of a committee designing a horse. Your marque* 1 is on day one. Marque 2 (double glazing - you survived so now make life better) is on day two and so on. * Yes, that is the correct spelling - AWESOME, genuine English/French! Vive la difference.
