Mara's Musings There is in NK a secret economy that uses hard currencies to operate western style businesses. In the late 50s I was an American army dependant in NATO countries and lived in a restricted economy. In 56 the Russians went into Hungary and the special currency we used was swapped. This made no sense because if the Russians continued into Germany they could have broken into the stores and been amazed.

You can tell that they don't serve food at that place normally often. She fiddles with fries as if she hasn't served it before. ...and then when one tipps over she say oooooh . People in the western country mostly only watch from western propagandas. Media tend to exaggerate things as well. All Jaka's videos only presented the life of middle-upper class people of North Korea, without offering any political views yet *id.iots* still shouting propaganda. Truly, the effects of propagandas are people tend to assume mundane things out of their a.s.s.e.s. and erase all sense of nuance.

From the comments, you can tell y'all don't know shit about politics and geography. Firstly the guy in the video is Indonesian due to what they're speaking and Islam not being a thing due to North Korea's views on religion. Secondly, yes the North Korean people can't afford this but he can because he is an immigrant worker, not some army general also he pays in USD or Chinese Yen which are both far more valuable than North Korean money which is why he can afford this. Also, you can hear other people in the back which means people from big cities such as Pyongyang are actually able to afford it. The reason the waitress serves fries in a formal manner is because in Asian Culture being polite and formal is very important and most people working for restaurants such as waitresses are hired as full-time workers rather than part-time so they do their work in a more committed manner.

A McDonald’s in Vegas is like this. They have a black baccarat chandelier that likely cost around a million dollars hanging in a freakin McDonald’s. They make money on the casino not the fast food though. This is possible because nothing needs to actually make money in foreign districts. Fast food restaurants are not fancy because they sell cheap food and need to turn a profit. These restaurants and stores are fancy to show off to foreigners and lose huge amounts every day but the party considers it propaganda spending so the purpose of their stores isn’t the same as everywhere else on earth.

I find these videos so interesting. I never really thought about life for people living in Pyongyang until I started watching these videos… now it’s a minor obsession for me. In a weird way, I was imagining people in Pyongyang to be very stern and unemotional. But you can see glimpses of people’s day to day lives here where they’re joking and laughing, playing, working, enjoying themselves and spending time with friends and family. I guess it’s obvious but it’s a side rarely seen by outsiders. I suspect even the few visitors to Pyongyang do not get to glimpse these scenes. From what I’ve heard, tourists aren’t allowed to really interact with the locals. It’s a shame because I think scenes like these really humanize the people of North Korea. As a Westerner, all I see and hear about North Korea is negative things. But this makes me go “oh yeah, there are actually people living here, too.” It’s funny that before watching this channel it wasn’t something I really thought about. Thank you for taking the time to upload these videos. They are really something! I hope that one day there will be peace and prosperity for all the people of North Korea. And maybe in time the rest of the world will be allowed to befriend the country and its people.

@@wolfiesworld9361 Maybe don't uncritically believe every horror story you hear about the country. Defectors are often encouraged and paid to embellish their stories and used essentially as propaganda tools by the South Korean government. In some cases this is obvious like Yeonmi Park, who constantly tells absurd lies and contradicts herself, while others tell more realistic accounts. That doesn't mean everything they say has to be wrong, but I'd be more sceptical about these stories coming out of North Korea, especially when they fit into this market for sensationalist stories about the crazy evil rogue state that is totally unlike every other nation.

Hey, bud, think before you jump and do a little research before you fall on your face in the comments by revealing your ignorance. Nobody in the rest of the world is ever speaking negatively about the people of NK but about the criminal Kim dynasty and one of the most oppressive regimes in history. Reminds me of here in Kazakhstan. People drink hot tea with everything. From local food to Burgers. Hot tea is default beverage! Also it’s funny because this place is called a “Soft Drink Restaurant” yet I see no refreshing cokes in enormous styrofoam cups like at a normal burger joint. In Kazakhstan nobody puts ice in drinks because they think ice will make you catch a cold or something. Perhaps it is similar in N. Korea?

Interesting the use of the term "Soft Drink Restaurant" that really makes it sound rather odd by western standards. I think in the US we'd call that a "Soda Shack" (of course this looks more like a sit-down restaurant like a Denny's or a Big Boy). Interesting how they serve the sandwiches first than the fries next, usually both would come at once (fries being a side dish).
