As I watch some of your videos, this reminds me so much of the South Korea of the 80’s that I know. I really learned to enjoy the food over there, there’s a Korean restaurant near the va hospital and I always stop there to eat the one older lady is from North Korea and we always have a nice visit and she will make dishes for me not on the menu.

the silence is so loud and the emptiness is eerie. the way the workers are just sitting around looking bored... even if this isn't staged its obvious that this isn't for the general public. i'm aware that this is for "privileged" folks but it does nothing to debunk what we know about NK. it's just wild how people continue to defend them as if they were personally affected.

Yeah, we've had something like this in the Soviet Union. In Moscow, and maybe a few other cities there were stores where you could buy Western goods, but they were restricted to specific people. There were stores where you could pay only with foreign currencies, chiefly US Dollars (I'm guessing they were for tourists and diplomats), and the goods there were actually well-made Soviet goods, whereas everywhere else people had to make do with the cheaply-made stuff. Also, a not very fun fun-fact: During WW2, some besieged cities (i.e. Leningrad, today's Saint-Petersburg) had restaurants for high-ranking Party and military officials. Here you had everything from simple bread to caviar to exotic fruits, and it was all fresh. And this was during the height of the siege, when there was famine (people were given a daily ration of 200 grams of barley bread made out of whatever was available; some people, like soldiers would get more, because they were supposed to protect the city), and it was also extremely cold. The patrons of those restaurants would engorge themselves on all that food and would simply throw away what remained. The staff (who were mostly simple people just following orders) only survived the siege by gathering the leftovers and feeding their families at the end of the day. One particular waiter got sent to prison (or executed, I don't remember) for serving buns that weren't "warm out the oven". Imagine that.

His wife is a foreign diplomat in north Korea. Jaka's just a freelance photographer, he just happened to accompany her staying there from 2012 because his wife was pregnant atm, and he decided to upload their video trips when they went back home in 2016 which earned him reputation (or maybe notoriety, depends on how you wanna look at things lol).

I suggest you to check out Zoe Discover channel as well, she had been in north Korea as tourist guide for much longer period (I think from 2003 until covid started to spread out globally) and she makes contents sharing insight about what's like to live inside the country from an outsider.

Im curious, the prices on the menu are displayed in korean won (KPW) and EUR, is Euro the most accepted/used foreign currency? I would have guessed its chinese Yuan (RMB) or USD, i saw them handing you back EUR as change in another video too. Why is Euro so common over there?
@JagaimoNeko
@JagaimoNeko Жыл бұрын
I don’t know the answer buf I think it’s the same as in Cuba. USD cannot be used because their leaders hate (or at least declare so) the US, same for Japan. CNY cannot be used because China does not want to openly declare the “friendship” with DPRK. So here we have EUR: EU is far away and the currency is open and freely convertible.
