Self-checkout is as much a joke as it is a boon. I like being able to do it myself, that's the ONLY benefit. It was cost-savings for the business otherwise. However, companies spent billions to retrofit every store with these complex systems, plus anti-theft measures, rather than just pay checkers. So was money really saved? If minimum wage didn't exist wages would be higher because businesses would then compete with each other for employees with wages. Now the government sets a standard rate of pay and all companies abide by it. Minimum wage is the reason wages are lower and the government is to blame for the dollar losing its value and on top of that the government takes almost 50% of everyone's wages so the problem is the government and people would have alot more money if the government wouldn't take half of it and then print trillions more destroying the value of our currency. People like to blame businesses but the real bad guy is the government and the real greed is also coming from the government. Idk of any business taking half my wages

I stopped getting fast food about a year ago. It was equally driven by increased prices and deteriorating food quality. If I ever want “fast food” I usually order takeout from a local restaurant. It’s a couple bucks more expensive but significantly better quality. There are no deals in fast food anymore. The only real appeal is the convenience of the drive thru.

Similar to the one grocery store we have, where even basic produce costs enough to break bank. They raised our minimum wage, but cut how many people we can have on the clock so that they could “maintain profits”. So food takes longer and costs more anyways. It’s all corporate greed. A wasted cheeseburger costs our store about 25 cents in actual food waste.

I never cared much for fastfood and I don't eat out often either. Maybe once or twice every other month or so but this is why when I do I eat out I go to locally owned joints. Where I live when I want something fast there is a local drive-in where the prices haven't changed in at least 10 years and the portions are so much bigger than what you'd get at McDonald's. Can get a full and legitimate meal for less than $10 and not just a burger and small fry. If I want to be charged more than that then I am just going to go to a place where I can sit down inside and has decent atmosphere where the food has to be good to stay in business lol. Honestly it amazes me anyone still goes to these corporate owned slop shops anymore considering the price outweighs the convenience.

This is the old paradigm. The paradigm is shifting. The reality is processed food costs way more for the end user than whole food does today from a caloric and nutritional density perspective. It's way more economical to eat healthy if you shop frugally, go to different stores not just one, and prepare your own meals, than it is to eat pre-prepared/processed food. I exercise and have a physical job. I easily eat 3k+ calories of healthy whole food for $10 daily on average. To be clear that's all my meals/nutrition in a day. $10 gets me nothing if i bought stuff prepared already. People also don't seem to understand that it's not that these American companies use chemicals as a cheaper replacement for regular ingredients. These chemicals often exist in addition to the regular ingredients; meaning these chemicals are extra cost not saving cost. Why do they do this in America? Because our corporations and society apparently think the most important things for a fruit preserve isn't the taste, it needs to look an unnatural bright red color instead of less visually appealing, dull reddish brown of real raspberry preserves. The corporations pay premiums to add these chemicals for reasons like texture, color, addictiveness. It's literally cheaper to make raspberry preserves from just raspberries, sugar and a drop of lemon juice than it is to add all the other stuff Smuckers does to get their unnatural color, texture and shelf life....as well as getting you hooked on their product with maltodextrin, msg etc. The point is if you empower yourself and engage in your own health it's cheaper to eat healthy if you're willing to put the work in shopping and prepping I'd also point out people don't appreciate the inefficiency that comes with scale. These companies are so much larger today than even cpl decades ago that the efficiency gained with factory processing is being eroded by losses that exponentially increase with scale such as waste. Scale is now at a point for many large corporations that they have fully eroded the buying power edge their size has given them. The tables are turning and it's small craft, boutique and artisan companies that are becoming hard to compete with on a profit basis. Turns out at scale there becomes a point that giving up the control of a small company erodes your profit margin. One large market has a tipping point if you want to compete in it. A more healthy economic ecosystem for a society is many small markets

Fastfood prices are now comparable to my local restaurants. I'm on the East Coast. My local McDonald's full meal with sandwich, fries, and a drink is about 13-15 bucks. A nearby restaurant with incredible spicy chicken sandwiches and fries is the same price. In 2016-17 it was about 8-9 bucks for a combo meal at McD's

I'll say this I live in canada a Big Mak meals sets you back about $17 back in 2016 it was about $11 However the minimum wage here is $17.20, and in 2016 it was $11.25 When you increase minimum they increase their prices. The problem is not everybody's elses wage increased over 6$ in that time. Many people like my wife were making like $20/hr in 2016 and now she makes like $21 an hour. She was making close to double minimum now shes making a quarter more than minimum. And alot of those $20-$30 hr jobs didnt increase their wage much since we boosted minimum so we feel the impacts more.

Well said. While I believe in regulating life saving medicine pricing to a degree, price setting by the government needs to be very limited. Government interference often leads to issues. Case in point, FDR set wage caps on several professions until WWII when his own generals told him that he needed to get his foot off the economy. To get around this, many employers starting giving, a while not new idea but very rarely given and almost unheard of, health insurance to employees to reward them for good work. Since then there has been this tug of war between insurance and medical providers which has contributed significantly to increased prices. Anyways, I digress, if people stop going to these fast food restaurants they in return will respond.

Finance guy here. You are absolutely correct in using covid as an excuse to raise prices/inflation. Its referred to as inflation "Stickiness" which violates many 'Theories" of economics that prices are efficient (Example, low supply, high demand, prices go up, but in turn you invest in manufacturing to increase production and lower cost, then costs come down as supply increases and fixed costs are lowered) this in reality rarely happens, and simple serves to increase profit margins while price remains constant or increased. (why leave money on the table? its the human factor of not necessarily playing best/efficient strategy for profits) and when prices are raised they are rarely ever lowered, which is a slap in the face to "efficient markets" . I knew, before inflation kicked off, this is EXACTLY what they would do with prices, or they see their competitor raise and match them. terribly frustrating. They say the only product that doesnt violate the efficient market is televisions, they have improved, gotten bigger, and prices have continued to fall. Thats about the only product, interestingly. Bread and Circuses!

In Canada about 4 or 5 years ago, right when the "apocalypse" happened and we had to teach all our "visitors" that washing your hands is a daily thing. It was $5 for a value meal at McDonalds. That's 5 Canadian pretend dollars, it had a burger, fries and a drink. Across the street was Burger King undercutting them, for the same price it was fries a drink and two burgers. Now the "value" meal at McDonalds is $10 and the BK meal is back down to one burger but it's $8?. I once tried to order a single burger from a Wendys, it was $4 in person and $23 through Uber eats because of all the fees. Now that the delivery apps around here have dropped fees, everyone tripled their prices on the apps pretending it was to compensate for them taking a cut. Sorry I don't need a fucking degree in advanced mathematics to understand that a company taking a cut of anywhere from 5-15% doesn't require a 300% price increase to compensate? I almost never eat out anymore, they had me at their "restaurants" almost daily for years, last time I went to a McDonalds was two years ago, the manager called me a stupid bitch for not owning a car and told me I was too low class to eat there because of it. I wrote to corporate and they wrote back stating that the employees followed policy. Being that I'm apparently a stupid bitch for not having enough money to pay for a car + insurance to eat at the discount store two blocks away? I eat home cooked meals now, it tastes better at a fraction of the cost, they can't even sell me on convenience anymore sine actual frozen dinners are cheaper, healthier, more accurately advertised and taste better.

As a fast food shop owner i can tell you prices are insane, but i can share why. As pandemic hit, they took away all our plastic bags , and straws, then the trucks stopped , and plants shut. Right after that we had the illegal worker / border stuff start. Then gas started rising during the trucking crisis. After that they banned all our foam products , and the paper / cardboard stuff is no joke 3X the price. Cheese is up 3.5X the price it was in 2019. Fresh produce, even if you buy local is now over 3X the price. I am now using 3 supply companies just to make sure i can get the products i want. Cause EnS Foods will not have my chicken one week, but Bova Foods will, or I cant get the ham i use from either of them, so i call Sisco Foods. Then we go to the depot outlet ourselves on our day off , and fill in the gaps! Since 2020 it has almost felt like a serious push to regulate small family food places out of the business. Like you showed how the fast food giants gained massive amounts of money since pandemic...... I swear a big chunk of that cash is because the tiny burger shop that couldnt eat the massive costs to survive since 2020 have closed, and the big chains are whats left. If you were any kind of boss at all, you paid your staff during pandemic while your business was shut down for months, and then even when you did reopen......, your dinning rooms had to be closed! So you had to find made up jobs , or keep paying your wait staff to not work. Since 2019-2020 owning a small fast food place has been a non stop noney battle to not raise prices , but still be able to survive.

Cooking was always a skill people must have, regardless of the prices. If you can’t cook, you failed as a human being. You don’t have to be a chef, but you have to at least need to know how to use a oven. As for a professional skill, unless you are willing to get an education of a professional chef and spend decades of low pay to get experience to make a name for yourself for a chance of higher pay, then cooking as a skill is one of the worst skills you can learn in today’s time. Unless you are as well known as Gordon Ramsay, you are not a good chef yet.

The $5 deal from McDonalds in my area came with a small fry and a small drink. Wendy's increased the price of their original $4 deal, again with a small fry and small drink, to $5 and did not offer a new $4 deal. It's funny they tell us it's not affordable as they spend countless millions on advertising, as their profit margins continue to increase, as their CEO bonuses continue to increase, so basically the company is earning all time high levels of money, and yet they will say they can't afford to go down on prices. This can't be true, they just don't want to give up their profit margins that they've worked so hard to push so high up. Once they turn it back down, it's going to be hard to bring the profit margins back to where they are today so they're going to squeeze us bone dry until then.

Cheaper is very arguable here. Surface level cost probably looks cheaper for sure. There are several other factors at play though. The largest of which (in most people's cases is time). What's your time actually worth? Not just an hourly wage your employer agrees to pay you, but your free time? Where you get to decide what's important. Hours in meal prep, grocery shopping, cleanup. Etc. Paying a couple extra bucks to put that nonsense into someone else's hands IS the reason fast food exists. So cost is arguable, but imo quality isn't even questionable.
