One of the choice lines, "I've never owned a car.... I ride the subway everyday to work" How many other of the city's brass can claim, or would claim that.
@CaptainDripp6 жыл бұрын
tnprime me. I've never owned a car either (mainly cause I'm a bit too young to own one to begin with) and I ride the subway (almost) everyday. Sure, delays piss me off and make me late, but I just DEAL WITH IT. I'm not like every other commuter who b itches about every single little delay, it's clear that these people have NEVER been to, experienced, OR EVEN HEARD of other public Transportation systems in the world. And another thing, once you know how the system works "behind the scenes" (and by that, I mean types of signals, how things work in the tunnel, communications between crew and tower, etc.) Combined with the history of the subway, trust me on this, you'll never look at the MTA the same way again.

To everyone arguing in the comments section: The MTA doesn't, and will never have enough money to fix every issue in the system, unless there is substantial change in legislation (or they decide to go fully self-sustaining and raise the fares to $10). So you fix the MTA by voting for pro-transit local representatives, ones who support introducing Congestion charging for cars in Manhattan already! Bloomberg wanted to do it years ago!
@joestewart89146 жыл бұрын
I see nothing wrong with raising the fare to match operating costs. They should be able to get it done at about $8.50 but that's only my opinion and if it has to be $10 it should be $10.
@JJ-mh3hb6 жыл бұрын
If the MTA was a private corporation they'd need to raise the fare to $25/ride to break even.
@DaReS2976 жыл бұрын
@joestewart I see a lot wrong with it. Public transit systems do not operate in a vaccum of the free market. They are a public service, like healthcare or the fire department. There is a movement underway in progressive cities all around Europe where cities are trying to make their systems free to city residents, or at least for people who can't afford it. Good public transit improves people's health while cars do the opposite. So again, drivers should pay for public transit. Bloomberg suggested that idea as well once.
@Novusod6 жыл бұрын
They should raise the fair to $10. That would be smart. You get what you pay for.
@DaReS2976 жыл бұрын
@novusod That doesn't work. Because then the ridership goes way down, the MTA goes bankrupt and everyone starts using their cars to get around again, so NY starts looking like New Delhi. A Lose-Lose-Lose situation.
@kevinduval3696 жыл бұрын
Thank God we have a competent person who actually cares about their job and what it means. I only pray that the subway system and bus system can be remodeled and reinvented before 2025 because the city is only set on growth so all these short terms better pay off with a reduced fair and on time arrivals. I'm putting faith on this company to not destroy the NYC market.

I've read the plan and it is good. I also had the chance a couple of months ago to talk to Mr. Byford and he is serious about doing this. The problem lies not with him, or even most MTA employees. It is with the politicians and funding. Yes, the money is there to do this- the MoveNY plan which would alter the toll system on bridges and in Manhattan; a small tax on seven-figure incomes, etc. Changes in how the MTA plans and contracts work and work rules- some of which date back 60 years, all need be changed as well. The combination of these things would all provide the money to transform the system. If you read the plan, it is split into two five year segments. I would like to add a third one, with one very large, project: an extension of the number 1 train from Whitehall to Governors' Island, then to Red Hook, and then to Staten Island. Hey, we can all dream, can't we?
@BicyclesMayUseFullLane6 жыл бұрын
Chet Cutick "politicians are the problem" Well, shit, colour me surprised. Hell, I think part of reason why he left Toronto was because the politicians here screwed him hard. With the really questionable new streetcar acquisition and steadfast refusal to fund a downtown relief line (which will 'relief' the bottlenecks at the interchanges between Toronto's main 2 subway lines) until some random suburban sprawl of a politician's constituency was served with subway (which will no doubt worsen the bottleneck), there really wasn't much more he could've done back in Toronto. If New York is anything like Toronto, he's gonna need some really good allies in the political system, because nothing will actually get done without them. So, from north of Lake Ontario, I wish Mr. Byford and you folks down at the Big Apple good luck; you'll probably a lot need it.

Also I am very grateful that he has addressed the issue directly versus dodging it. I look forward to reading the plan.

I don't think anyone is disputing that London had one of the first if not the first subway line worldwide. However NY's mass transit system is quite old with construction of the first elevated train line starting in 1867 and proposals going back to 1833. NY also has North Americas and maybe the western hemispheres first rail tunnel under city streets opened in 1844 in Brooklyn. NY also had electric traction before London and also there was the Beach Pneumatic system using compressed air and which opened in 1870. So while not the first, NY was certainly a leader in early mass transit and probably this story should have stated it that way.

It’s a shame that a visionary like Andy Byford was forced out of the MTA leadership post by former Governor Cuomo. The MTA has tons to learn about operating a cohesive transportation network by seeing how they operate their systems in Europe. I spend part of my time in Europe and I am currently in Switzerland. Their transport network is absolutely outstanding! Maybe some of the MTA bigwigs need to get the hell out of their ivory tower and make a field trip to Geneva and see what a cohesive system looks like. In the US we like to rest on our laurels and brag how great we are when in reality there are a lot of things that are better outside of the US.

Here's my problem with the MTA as a New Yorker they come up with these new plan they don't follow through with it a lot of times the only thing they follow through is there fare hike. If anybody goes back into the 90s New York used to get a lot of money to fix the problem it was Albany and the governor at the time remove the extra funding from the MTA that's why the MTA that a state that is in now on top of that the rich are not paying their taxes in Manhattan which is the business district and the very most expensive place to live in why the low income people have to pay high taxes for a system that's not getting funded. This new plan is okay but I mean the system should have been maintained since the start of the twenty-first century. If it was maintained repaired and fix we wouldn't be needing this 10 year plan we would have had a five year plan. This is going to be another wasteful plan just wait until next year for another fare hike and wait until 2020 the plan is not in the full motion yet oh yeah on top of that Trump is also not going to help us repair the system as well he's not giving any funds to New York to repair the two tunnels so yeah.

Well, this should be easy as cake considering that each year, we pay $3,500,000,000 each year for the MTA system. New York pays more than any city in the world. Meanwhile, Paris, France only pay $100,000,000 each year and Washington only pays $250,000,000 each year. So how about starting off by sending C trains to Lefferts Blvd? Then Send Rush Hour Z trains to Bay Parkway or 9th Avenue via West End? Oh and don't forget about sending G trains back to Continental Avenue with more cars and/or trains
@TheRailLeaguer5 жыл бұрын
Parkside Productions Not enough cars and demand for those service changes. The Fast Forward Plan is mainly tackling car reliability issues, signal problems, and other problem areas.

Parkside Productions Yes, but your service extensions can wait.
@CaptainDripp5 жыл бұрын
In order for C trains to go to Lefferts, a new Fulton Local would have to take its place so that the C could run express. (Let's say the R or W for example by building a new tunnel) As much as I want the G back to Continental, it would just be wasted capacity, so I wouldn't bother. The J and Z are literally the same service but with a different stopping pattern. You might as well increase D service and have the J/Z extended to Bay Ridge.

YEAH, RIGHT. THEY CLOSED MY STATION ON THE N/W LINE FOR 7 MONTHS. WHEN IT OPENED THE SAME RATTY, PUDDLE FILLED CEMENT PLATFORM WAS IN PLACE AND SAME RUSTY SUPERSTRUCTURE UNDERNEATH. THEY LINED THE STATION WITH GLASS PANELS THAT WERE CRUDDY THE FIRST DAY IT OPENED. STATIONS UNDERGROUND SMELL LIKE PISS, AT LEAST MINE IS OUTSIDE WITH SOME FRESH AIR.

I was shocked when I saw the state of NYC subway, everything is literally falling apart:( London underground is a paradise in comparison. NYC subway needs billions of dollars of investment over the next 10 years, just like London has had.

Since TfL really knows how to run a transit system, and the MTA seems to have forgotten, importing some talent is a good thing.
