Good to know. I wasn't even aware Civil Defense made a 70 grain in 10mm. I haven't been able to find either 60 or 70 grains in Los Angeles where I live. I think they both perform very well. I don't mind the base of the bullet curving once it hits an attacker. Also, curved wound tracks are longer than straight ones. I estimate a 12" curved penetration into the block could be a 13" or more actual penetration depending on the degree of the curve. And the initial spherical wound cavity is like a little grande going off. These round are impressive.

These do function as advertised but they’re just like rip rounds and disintegrate on impact which is exactly how varmint rounds perform too. Why be skeptical of light grain pistol ammo?... Typcial 5.7 is 40gr / .223 50gr / .556 70gr.. As long as these things are pushing over 2100fps they should behave like short barreled rifle rounds. The whole purpose of these light rouds is replicate the 5.7 40gr going over 2100fps to get into is hydrostatic shock territory.. and the high speed light weight of the 5.7 out of the 16" ps9 is what made it penetrate basic body armour. Add extra 1" to 1.5" to that barrel for an extra 10% fps and energy and really get as close as possible to rifle levels of damage.

Speed defeats hard barriers. These rounds sail through windshields and auto bodies. Fluid ( flesh and gel) cause them to frag. I’m still trailing way behind on the videos! Lol. But I have that exact same feeling about this ammo and the results. It would probably be great stuff if you were going to be in a situation where guaranteed lower penetration was needed, yet still a great deal of damage. But it is the penetration that tends to cause fight ending damage, such as reaching the CNS. Maybe if they had more of a spherical base rather than a disc? That might tend to get deeper and fly straight. If I shoot center mass, whether it be low, middle or high…I expect 10mm to reach the spine from the front regardless of organs or bone. And that keeps going full circle back to the Underwood XD and XP. It’s light per caliber and fast as well. Creates tissue disruption. But it gets just a bit beyond the high side of that 12-18 inch and stays intact. It’s still the one to beat imo. It’s great to have the different types of ammo available to meet different needs!

It's disappointing that we didn't get 50-yard velocities from this since the "real 10mm" threshold is defined by 50-yard (actually meter, but close enough) velocities and energy numbers, but I think we can tell enough from the 10-yard velocities. With the 60 grain bullets, our 3-shot average velocity at 10 yards was 2146 feet per second for an average 10-yard energy of 613 energy foot pounds. In order to be under "real 10mm" energy levels at 50 yards, we would have to see the velocity drop below 1826 feet per second (it's at 444 energy foot pounds at 1826 fps, which is the floor for "real 10mm). With the 70 grain bullets, the 3-shot average velocity at 10 yards was 2005 feet per second, giving us an average 10-yard energy of 625 energy foot pounds. In order to be under the "real 10mm" threshold, our 50-yard velocity for the 70-grain bullet would have to drop below 1690 feet per second in order to drop below the 444 energy foot pound floor. In both cases, that's a lot of velocity to have to lose to drop below "real 10mm" levels. And from what we've seen with other rounds, there's not anywhere near that much velocity loss between 10 and 50 yards.

Either one is good. But I still would not be on the business end of either. Cause the disc would go anywhere and cause more damage. Great test though.

You need to watch it perform against the Kevlar vest. There was another guy on this KZbin channel that was shooting Kevlar vest was a civil defense

I have a couple boxes of the 60 grain, but I haven't seen the 70 grain in person yet. These honestly aren't awful. You save a little weight, little less recoil & it makes an absolute mess in whatever it hits.

More weight in that disc definitely isn't a bad thing.😎👍

not a huge fan of fracturing bullets, but i see the appeal
@johnb7430 Жыл бұрын
I wouldn't even be bothered if they fragmented and totally dumped all energy within 8" after passing the thick clothing. Provided there was a wide disruption path over 2". My opinion is that unlike FBI / LEO, shooting through a barrier to a threat will get a civilian in deep doodoo more often than not.

I think these high velocity light for caliber rounds are actually great for specific scenarios, one bullet just can't do it all, but for summer time civilian self defense I think it's great, most people in the summer are wearing light clothing and nothing else, in the winter when heavy jackets and layers are a factor there are better options. Personally I like it, it's nice to switch it up depending on the situation. Obviously it's not ideal for a "duty" gun if barriers are a concern, not great for police. However for most people we aren't realistically going to ever shoot through barriers. Now I know some of y'all think your going to get attacked by a entire gang of people and have to shoot through drywall, and auto glass and car doors etc, like some kind of over the top 1980s action film... but lets be real, in 999/1000 self defense cases it's up close and personal person to person self *defense* unless you got the entire mafia chasing you...

I keep a mag loaded up with the Liberty Ultra Light Civil Defense that has a two piece "brass" with an aluminum casehead and steel walls, similar to how the new Spear ammo is made. A 12 round mag full of this stuff weighs almost 1 & 1/2 ounces less than a 10 round mag loaded with 115JHP in 9mm. so it goes in my pocket as a spare when I am wearing shorts with no belt. It would be my first choice against coyotes and such, since it is DEVASTATING in a short distance, but I'm like you... I don't trust it enough for regular EDC since it fragments so dramatically. But as a lightweight extra mag, I sure like it. If I ever need that mag for real, then it's already Katy bar the door anyway, and I have seen videos where that little base will penetrate Class II armor.

The way the base curves reminds me of what happens when you shoot a flat rock from a slingshot, like you said, they do what they are designed to do, but I'm going to hang on to the HSTs, Thanks Brian. 👍

10mm is my absolute favorite handgun round, and I EDC an FN510, since I got one for Father’s Day. I have about 12 different types of serious ammo for it (I typically run American Eagle for all target stuff), that are either hollow, hardcast, or frangible. I’m interested in checking out anything hot coming out in 10mm, because why not? That said, my preference for bedside home defense is .45 and a tactical light. Maybe I can get lucky and the wife will get me an FN545 for Christmas and I can put my beloved 1911 back in the main safe.
@joshmatlock3410 Жыл бұрын
What rounds do you use for EDC? Right now I go between Underwood 150’s and 180’s, but they sure are spicy. I’m sure interested in using a round such as this that makes carrying light and saves my wrists a bit.
@Watchdog_UFOtestpilot Жыл бұрын
@@joshmatlock3410 I use Federal Premium HST 200gr because that’s what Portland Police use. It’s extremely consistent and reliable, approved by the feds/police, and will hold up in court if I need to use it. In the woods I run the underwood extreme penetrator 140 gr platinum (coated copper).

One thing that would be nice about carrying them is they are a whole lot lighter than a mag full of lead hollows.

Cool test, definitely a surgeon's nightmare with all the pieces left behind. Would I carry it?, probably not. My opinion is that a 10mm needs to hit hard and go far. It should be an all purpose round, for four legs and two. Thoughts?

Civil defense won me over. Its pricey compared to others, but man can i feel the difference. I always train with my old ammo as i cycle it out and the difference in recoil was noticeable enough. The way it dumps energy and penetration abilities are why it become mine and my gfs edc. I doubt ill ever need to pop through soft armor, but if I do, I know I can.

Wouldn't the continuing projectiles tumbling create further damage inside a body? This is a good thing isn't it? Or no?
@Rusonekox910 ай бұрын
Not sure if i like it, humans bodies do have muscle, bones and fat to consider the baseplate penetrationwhich the gel test lacks for testing. 🤔 still worth considering besides the underwood ammunition.
