These rounds are a no go for me, barrier penetration would destroy them and hollow points can clog. For high velocity unconditional performance I carry the reliable barrier blind Underwood 68 gr XD round in 357 Sig it gets a velocity of 2200 fps with 750 ft. lbs. of energy. I have full confidence in the XD round, I have little interest in the Liberty stuff.

Good to know. I wasn't even aware Civil Defense made a 70 grain in 10mm. I haven't been able to find either 60 or 70 grains in Los Angeles where I live. I think they both perform very well. I don't mind the base of the bullet curving once it hits an attacker. Also, curved wound tracks are longer than straight ones. I estimate a 12" curved penetration into the block could be a 13" or more actual penetration depending on the degree of the curve. And the initial spherical wound cavity is like a little grande going off. These round are impressive.

@@wtjonesphd9375 if you wanna complain about policies then move. I'm pretty sure if you go down to your regular FFL and ask them, they are allowed to have ammo ordered online and shipped to CA, but shipped directly to the FFL... Not shipped to your doorstep. If you cannot place an order and use the FFL's address then ask your FFL if he would be willing to buy a full case if you were to buy half once it arrives. They should be able to directly email the company or supplier.... Especially considering this ammo is supposedly "green", I'm surprised California doesn't have a lot more of it.

Speed defeats hard barriers. These rounds sail through windshields and auto bodies. Fluid ( flesh and gel) cause them to frag. A local FFL and myself have tested these extensively (.380, 9mm. 40sw. 357sig,and 10mm.) They punch through bone and hide like a cookie cutter and can defeat "some" body armor ( depending on class and caliber.)

That's wild for a pistol caliber. Those rounds are pushing velocities faster than most 5.7x28 ammo, especially the red box version. What impressed me was the movement of the gel block. How did the pistol hold up? I know a lot of firearm makers mention that going too light in grain and lots of speed doesn't fair well with the reliability of the pistol.

This type of light for caliber high velocity ammo seems like it might be better suited for "indoor" use, like living in an apartment complex or carrying in a crowded mall, store, concert or something like that, even a crowded outdoor event where overpenetration might be a factor. Otherwise I think I would feel more confident in a "normal" weight for caliber with a good expanding bullet. They are interesting and I do think there is a purpose for some people or situations.

If these performed well in real world scenarios then law enforcement agencies everywhere would issue them to their employees. These do function as advertised but they’re just like rip rounds and disintegrate on impact which is exactly how varmint rounds perform too. The reason not to use these for self defense is the same exact reason why no one would recommend using a varmint round on a deer or elk. Each to their own though and I know there are plenty of y’al out there

No LE agency will use this because of 1) PRICE and 2) controversy. These are frangible bullets. The impact of a 100MM at the FBIs' 21 feet standard, 2500 FPS or .45 acp at 2000 fps, will shock vaporize/rupture any internal organs around the wound channel.

Would have been cool if that extra weight was somehow in the exposed part instead of the base and could make it hold together another inch or two before it came apart, 3 inches is pretty dang shallow even on a perfect front on impact, but for sure if you had to use it on a situation where the angle was going to a 45° or 90° from square. I couldn't imagine having to go through an arm or something to try and get to vitals

I think these high velocity light for caliber rounds are actually great for specific scenarios, one bullet just can't do it all, but for summer time civilian self defense I think it's great, most people in the summer are wearing light clothing and nothing else, in the winter when heavy jackets and layers are a factor there are better options. Personally I like it, it's nice to switch it up depending on the situation. Obviously it's not ideal for a "duty" gun if barriers are a concern, not great for police. However for most people we aren't realistically going to ever shoot through barriers. Now I know some of y'all think your going to get attacked by a entire gang of people and have to shoot through drywall, and auto glass and car doors etc, like some kind of over the top 1980s action film... but lets be real, in 999/1000 self defense cases it's up close and personal person to person self *defense* unless you got the entire mafia chasing you...

It's disappointing that we didn't get 50-yard velocities from this since the "real 10mm" threshold is defined by 50-yard (actually meter, but close enough) velocities and energy numbers, but I think we can tell enough from the 10-yard velocities. With the 60 grain bullets, our 3-shot average velocity at 10 yards was 2146 feet per second for an average 10-yard energy of 613 energy foot pounds. In order to be under "real 10mm" energy levels at 50 yards, we would have to see the velocity drop below 1826 feet per second (it's at 444 energy foot pounds at 1826 fps, which is the floor for "real 10mm). With the 70 grain bullets, the 3-shot average velocity at 10 yards was 2005 feet per second, giving us an average 10-yard energy of 625 energy foot pounds. In order to be under the "real 10mm" threshold, our 50-yard velocity for the 70-grain bullet would have to drop below 1690 feet per second in order to drop below the 444 energy foot pound floor. In both cases, that's a lot of velocity to have to lose to drop below "real 10mm" levels. And from what we've seen with other rounds, there's not anywhere near that much velocity loss between 10 and 50 yards.

I’m still trailing way behind on the videos! Lol. But I have that exact same feeling about this ammo and the results. It would probably be great stuff if you were going to be in a situation where guaranteed lower penetration was needed, yet still a great deal of damage. But it is the penetration that tends to cause fight ending damage, such as reaching the CNS. Maybe if they had more of a spherical base rather than a disc? That might tend to get deeper and fly straight. If I shoot center mass, whether it be low, middle or high…I expect 10mm to reach the spine from the front regardless of organs or bone. And that keeps going full circle back to the Underwood XD and XP. It’s light per caliber and fast as well. Creates tissue disruption. But it gets just a bit beyond the high side of that 12-18 inch and stays intact. It’s still the one to beat imo. It’s great to have the different types of ammo available to meet different needs!

Lots of sizzle with Liberty Ammo, but considering these things are never under $1/round going w/the steak seems to be a lot more practical. You can get something like Winchester white box JHP with 50 rounds for about the same price as you would w/these for only 20 rounds.

Just like you, I am not sold on this design. That penetration of the frag elements is super shallow and if were to hit it any structure it would probably be even less. And the non-straight path of the disc concerns me as well. Looks like you could have a perfect center mass shot and still miss everything you wanted to hit.

I keep a mag loaded up with the Liberty Ultra Light Civil Defense that has a two piece "brass" with an aluminum casehead and steel walls, similar to how the new Spear ammo is made. A 12 round mag full of this stuff weighs almost 1 & 1/2 ounces less than a 10 round mag loaded with 115JHP in 9mm. so it goes in my pocket as a spare when I am wearing shorts with no belt. It would be my first choice against coyotes and such, since it is DEVASTATING in a short distance, but I'm like you... I don't trust it enough for regular EDC since it fragments so dramatically. But as a lightweight extra mag, I sure like it. If I ever need that mag for real, then it's already Katy bar the door anyway, and I have seen videos where that little base will penetrate Class II armor.

While the performance in this test is good, I'll still take a bonded lead-core HP for my carry guns. Like you, I prefer more penetration and a predictable bullet path. I will say, though, that the Civil Defense is good on varmints from a PCC. Shot a coyote at 60 yards with a 9mm CD; DRT, and a nice pelt because the exit hole was tiny (just the bullet base). Inside wasn't so nice..."soup" is probably the best descriptor.😬

Well, then put a Glock model 40 barrel in the G20. He's thinking if it goes 2000 fps it'll blow the frame because of unsupported chamber problems, but I'm pretty sure Tools said they solved that issue. You'll have a tad of barrel hanging out but THEN you can put a 165' or 180 grain actual full bore 10mm load in the thing with a modified recoil set up. Ted Nugent hunts with a G40 all the time. The misconceptions abound ..

I wouldn't even be bothered if they fragmented and totally dumped all energy within 8" after passing the thick clothing. Provided there was a wide disruption path over 2". They do over 3000 fps from my 10mm carbine. Haven't had a chance to get test them but I can't imagine they would be much different from a frangible or varmint style 556 at close range. They bleed energy extremely rapidly and may be an option for those concerned about overpenetration or stray projectiles in an urban environment. I would like to see fewer, larger fragments that penetrate deeper and straighter penetration from the base. Then again 5.7 green tips veer all over the place as well and they seem to do just fine so who knows.
