That's a really good point McClain. I've updated the video description to include that information. This platform is designed to give you a smooth, solid surface to stand on when doing Olympic weight lifting. It also gives you a solid, but soft surface to drop the weights on so you don't damage the floor or the weights.

Thank you for making this video. The portability/size of the platform was exactly what I needed. Built it earlier this week and everything has worked out well. Keep up the good work!

I'm so glad to hear that you built this and it's working for you. Thanks for the compliments!

Just wanted to say thanks for posting this. I made a modified version of this. I couldn't get 4x4 sheets into my car, so I used 10 4x2 sheets instead. And rubber tiles instead of horse stall matting. Turned out very well.
@RickOsgood10 жыл бұрын
No problem! I'm glad it was able to help you. Also good to know that 10 4x2 sheets will work just fine. It's nice to be able to fit the stuff in your car and also to be able to move it out of your way if you have limited space.

How are you going to split jerk on this? This is a deadlift platform.

Good job, that's a seriously heavy duty platform.

Great video. I made one of these a few months ago and it does the job really well.

Yep there's a difference in size between an olympic lifting platform and a deadlift platform and i notice most youtubers don't know the difference.

Awesome. Does everything stay in place when you drop weights on it though? I'd probably add a frame to it myself.

@Geddie so far I haven't had an issue with them moving around. They are pretty heavy and they have a large surface area. I've only ever gone up to about 260 pounds with it though.

Rick Osgood instead of using glue for the top layer 4x4 , can I just use the screws to lock it down?

Perfect lifting platfrom!
@chaostactics4 жыл бұрын
To point out the obvious. 1. There was no reason to flip the end with the horse stall mat over to glue it. 2. If you're building a dead lift platform you should have weight plates which would serve fine as heavy weight and avoid the need for clamping and give you more even weight/"clamping" distribution.

is this big enough to put a small rack in it as well 4ft by 3ft squat rack along with a bench ?

thanks for making this ! how do you think this would shape up if it was outdoors? any tips to making this weatherproof?
@RickOsgood10 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure it would hold up very well outside. It's mostly made of wood, which would likely start to rot and break down from the weather. It could also possibly start to warp, though I suspect it would be minimal since it's so thick by the end. I would think you would need to seal it with something. Maybe look into weatherproofing for wood fence and see if you can use the same ideas for this?
@firewire89125 жыл бұрын
the problem with this ia once you cut it the weight distribution is much less over the platform now.
@danrich503210 жыл бұрын
I wanted to save money and cut down on cost since wood is expensive and my location and stall mats are even more expensive. Would using used pallets be a bad idea? ,I would by a 4x8 plywood for the top but the base(bottom) would be constructed of all used pallets that I would take apart. Any comments are very appreciated. Thanks!
@RickOsgood10 жыл бұрын
I don't see why it wouldn't work. All you really need in the end is a sturdy platform to stand on that won't fall apart or be crushed under the weight. If the boards are strong enough, it would probably work. You could probably use something else other than a stall mat too. That's really just there to protect the wood from when you drop the weights down on it. Maybe some carpet pad would work? This is the stuff that is put underneath carpeting. You might be able to find some scraps that are big enough from a local carpet dealer.

this is a great video! I would like to ask what Grit sandpaper did you use for the top surface board? and did you coat it with anything? or just left it as is. I am concerned it might be too smooth.
@RickOsgood8 жыл бұрын
+Tri Le I don't recall the grit. I considered finishing it to be shiny and smooth but ultimately I got lazy and just left it as raw wood. It's not slippery at all.

About how much $ does the entire project cost? How much do the sections weigh? Do you have any advice about weather proofing (zinc screws, varnish, moisture protection, warping from heat protection...)?
@RickOsgood10 жыл бұрын
Each section is pretty heavy. They have to be in order to stay in place when you drop the weights on them. They are light enough, though, that I am able to move them around on my own. The whole project cost probably less than $150. It was a while ago though, so it's tough to remember exactly. I've had mine in my garage for the last seven months and have not had any issues due to moisture or weather.
@MDmountain5056 жыл бұрын
How did this hold up in the long run? Any separation only using glue on the outer mats?
@RickOsgood6 жыл бұрын
Mine is still fine. I only use it for deadlifts and I always set the weights down rather than drop them since I don't have bumper plates. I'm not sure if it would hold up the same if you were constantly dropping weights on it.
