I had a Laser II many years ago. Kids were small so seldom hoisted the spinnaker. That assymetrical blows me away !!! Hauling along at those speeds, with all the dacron flying, a fine boat being sailed singled-handed by a BOSS !!! Brilliant !!

Outstanding! Did an expedition rig version with mine, full batten flat top main, battened jib and a WHOMPER downwind asymmetrical hanging off of a very long carbon sprit . Dismasted 4 miles offshore in 30 knot winds during Everglades Challenge 300 mile race to Florida Keys. New shrouds and better reefing habits for March 2023 race!

New old sailor, can you walk me through this? I'm looking to put together a boat that will do island hopping in Penobscot Bay and you've got me very interested.

That humming was generated by the centerboard's vibration at speed, I used to hear it while sailing the Laser 1 during the early 80's, thanks for the video, I keep watching it again and again😊

Hello, I'd like to ask a question. At what angle should I abandon heeling on a Laser 1? My friends and instructors keep telling me I should abandon at roughly a 75 degree angle and i need advice for handle heeling on a Laser 1 in heavy winds.
@jamaljabi5295
@jamaljabi5295 Жыл бұрын
@@UnknownCircuit182 As I remember, the optimum sailing performance of a laser I is achieved without any heeling which causes drag reducing the speed, Laser sailors prefer to keep the heeling angle to the minimum

@@UnknownCircuit182 Its the ILCA, not the "Laser 1", and yes in the ILCA you try to reduce the heeling to its minimum to get the maximum speed.

I would love if this was a development class. Laser Hull and you're allowed to do anything with it you like. That is a great setup and quick!!

Cool stuff. Single handed gennaker on this tiny monohull - you have my respect. We did this on a Hobie 16 with a 22sqm and two guys, and that was quite a bit of work. And a lot of fun, I should add.

Wow! We just bought an laser 2 und came up with the gennaker/asymetrical Spinnaker idea. Did some research: wow 😲! Very well done! We're located in Germany near Stuttgart, desperately trying to copy your set up :) could you help us with some sketches and data about your Spinnaker setup ? Would love to proudly ride your set up here in Europe 🌍 Greets Valentin

I made a video a while back on the spinnaker setup. The spinnaker itself is based on the dimensions of a laser 3000. I would recommend setting up the pole and measuring the rig dimensions before getting the spinnaker. I bought a kit from sailrite in USA and sewed it together. Highly recommend going that route. Have fun with the new boat!! kzbin.info/www/bejne/aXuzg4qqqLWCjbs

that was by far one of the best laser videos ever. Did you measure the speed? That looked like more than 18 kn? At the moment I am building an old Laser 4000. hopefully I'll be able to get the little beast running again this summer. have a nice sailing time

Super easy to get out. Just get a long tiller extension and hop out! I remember it was a big step at the time but once you are on the wire it is super relaxing. My tiller is a ronstan rf3132 and it is perfect.

Laser 2's usually rig spinnaker, you are using a gennaker and i would like to try it on mine, what gennaker is that? Is it another boat's?
@FunDaySailing

It is a custom made kite but it is based on the laser 3000. I didn't have the pole or halyard setup when i ordered it so the dimensions are a little off. 140sq.ft I made a video on how everything is rigged if you want to check it out.

They used to be. Trouble is their main demographic was junior sailing clubs, especially for teaching Bronze V (back when that was a thing) and their hulls went soft/cracked easily under the kind of abuse the kids would subject them to in lessons, so a lot of clubs switched to 420s (which I'm told were also cheaper). With the hull reinforced and used by skilled adults of the proper size I bet they'd last a decent length of time, though.
@mattjohnson8266

@@babgababsolutely true in pretty much all regards. It’s sad boats like these never caught on, high school and college sailing is dominated primarily by doublehanded monohulls now like FJs and 420s. With the new E and Z models, it’s hard to argue the effectiveness for both fleet and team racing, but there is so much less focus on singlehanded racing at higher levels. It’s a massive leap from optis lasers and sunfish to somethin like a moth, and the newer RS boats are super expensive. Laser 2s would have become a FANTASTIC high school and college singlehand boat if ever they made more. Now they are diamonds in the rough to find in good shape, quite sad indeed
