Definitely worth a shot with the full rig. The beauty of the laser is yes racing, but also just developing the technical feel for the boat. It's so basic that you can try anything with sail shape/controls to see what sticks, and the principles you learn are great for racing in any other class, because it's ALL about adaptability to the conditions

@joaopedromedeiros36894 жыл бұрын
I get the argument of "not trying to sail it perfectly, but rather seeing if it's fun". However, for dingy boats the kicker (boom vang) plays a major role in the amount of phisical work you do. Thats why we, laser sailor, use the vang a lot often, it depowers the sail by flattening it (in fact it's way better to thigten the kicker in a "block to block" fashion as the other controls will only affect the depth position (downhaul) and the deepness (outhaul) of the sail as fine tuners). Correctly trimming the kicker will lead to a much more fun ride in the lasers. Apart from this, great content!!!
@JoyriderTV4 жыл бұрын
Thanks very much for the explanation. That makes it all very clear. The kicker will certainly be engaged next time out!

How can this be anything but fun? It's simple and easy to learn. Having to work is a plus for fun in my book. Laser sailing isn't a pleasure cruise on 50ft yacht, it's a water sport. The only other boat that is more fun (defined as simple easy to learn) is a sunfish because it is just the sail and 1 control rope. I learned to sail on sunfish and lasers. A fun game we played was "sink the ship". You sail close to another boat and your partner jumps on their boat and capsize them

Sailed a full rig competitively in the mid 90’s for two seasons, including the winter frostbite series. What a boat! Improved my boat handling skills no end. I once sailed a summer regatta in winds gusting 30+ knots and it was insane. I’m 5’8” and was 12st at the time, and sailing it upwind was a real struggle. Easy boat to sail, difficult boat to master, also affordable and quick and easy to set up. I think it's important for every sailor to sail one of these or a similar single handed boat at some point in their career, because it's all down to you with no one else to blame. You will also race in big fleets with close tactical racing, where you will learn a lot. Obviously being an Olympic class has a lot to do with their popularity and I think for most people, unless you're aiming for that top tier, it's good for them to move onto other more challenging classes after a while.

Something to watch out for in the Laser is the infamous 'death roll' on runs or excessively broad reaches, you've really got to be careful about how you trim the sail and indeed the boat to avoid it in heavy weather. Too much vang or not enough mainsheet on a run is a recipe for capsizing. It's sometimes also helpful to deliberately lean the boat over to windward to put the CoE of the sail closer to the middle of the boat.

I was in Vassiliki sailing lasers 2 weeks ago. I have to say that it’s not good for sailing - the wind is very unpredictable as the bay is surrounded by mountains. There are doldrums everywhere and the wind just switches around without warning. I, and several others, got hit with the boom many times. It’s unavoidable. I ended up with a detached retina 😢. I do have an RYA day skipper sailing, so I’m no a noob. I, in retrospect, would recommend getting out past the bay and influence of the mountains if your sailing a dinghy.

Can you tell what mount were you using under the boom?
@JoyriderTV7 ай бұрын
It's a home made mount made by glueing 3 clips together - that were holding the spars together - I'll show you in tomorrow's Q+A

Lasers look so fun to race in a group! also either my computer sounds like you're in a tunnel or you might want to look into your audio.

Yes, I think that the sound did go a bit strange for this one - maybe a drop of water over the mic. Cheers

Joseph Bennett id recommend a windscreen or the windslayer cover for the GoPro, worse case it helps cut out wind noise!

@@ichewtoast111 yeah, i've been using one for all of my dry filming, not sure how it would be once it'd been under water.

Upwind! work Downwind! Menace Halfway? Heaven Think you go fast? Race Laser for life Sailing for eternity
@JoyriderTV11 ай бұрын
Yes, racing the Laser looks like one of the most difficult classes out there!
Going upwind you must really have the right setup or you wont have fun at all, really have to use a hell of alot of cunningham and kicker while the outhaul is quite flexible on what you can do.
@JoyriderTV4 жыл бұрын
Ok thanks, I'm getting a masterclass in upwind Laser sailing through youtube comments!
@evan11884 жыл бұрын
Joseph Bennett haha its quite good isnt it, i heard you say we abuse our sails but in reality the cloth in the sail is quite stretchy and isnt a very hard material so you can get away with over sheeting controls and itll spring back
@JoyriderTV4 жыл бұрын
@@evan1188 good to know. I'll wang more on next time.
@SergioMiletto84 жыл бұрын
For the upwind in this condition you want the kicker pulled until the two blocks on the boom and on the traveler touch, the cunningham also must be pulled as hell , it moves forward the belly of the sail and so sail is more efficient and the tendency of the boat of heading up is reduced finally, outhaul must be regulated based on the conditions of the waves by easing it a bit in high wave conditions and pulling it on flatter seas, upwind in this case in general must be very tighten varing it on the basis of what i wrote
@derPaul764 жыл бұрын

@JoyriderTV4 жыл бұрын
I'm on it, thanks.
@Barzeto4 жыл бұрын
Can someone explain to me what is "the vang"?
@RockinOn2174 жыл бұрын
“Boom vang”, also called the “kicker”. It pulls the boom down, which pulls on the leech of the sail. A Laser sailboat likes a lot of vang when going upwind to get speed.
@SportSoulLife4 жыл бұрын
Indeed. When you sheet out the boom should only move sideways, not up at all. Sheet it in completely (block to block) pull out all slack in the kicker and some 3 cm more. Remember to release the kicker before going downwind or you will be buying a new mast (been there done that) 😉
@Eliosempreteso3 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for this great piece of video! May I ask how you get the bottom right direction and instant speed on the videos? Thx
@JoyriderTV3 жыл бұрын
It was with the gopro quik app, now i'm using telemetry overlay
@AJ-sw8pm4 жыл бұрын
Going downwind, you left the downhaul on which seriously de-powered the sail, all you need downwind is a bit of kicker to keep the leach, next try beam reaches, fastest point of sail and doesn't require upwind
@JoyriderTV4 жыл бұрын
Now, that's a great tip. I'll try that

Which did you prefer? Zest or laser? Or have you tried any other monohulls?
@JoyriderTV3 жыл бұрын
I think they were pretty close in terms of what was more fun. If i was going to have one for myself to sail solo - the Laser would be the one so that I could race. If i was going to look at the best option for sailing with kids, more fun sailing than racing the Zest would win. I've tried quite a few different monos over the years.

What's the idea with pulling center board up and down? So you can lean her more?

On the race - across the wind you don't need as much lateral resistance so too much daggerboard just causes drag.

What keeps your Laser from going turtle at anchor? Any buoyancy at the mast top?

Because the boats are pointing into the wind they don't need any buoyancy - the weight of the hull and daggerboard is enough.
