I've been doing support for years and Fast Startup has caused more problems than it is worth. One of the first things we do is to disable fast startup on a computer and in every case, no one seems to tell the difference in boot up speed. I always recommend turning it off especially if the OS is running off of an SSD.

Brian, I was shocked to discover this setting when I was having a constant reoccurring problem, mainly with the coordination of lights on my Asus motherboard, between the RAM LEDs, and the case lights, they would not be in sync. I did discover a way to temporarily fix the issue... It was to do a cold boot, you know, where you unplug the PC and hold the power button... This would fix things For one reboot, until I found this very unusual... And I believe ridiculous setting on a modern PC with solid-state drives, even with a mechanical hard drive. The amount of time saved really is negligible, and balanced against other problems that I have discovered from my own customers, which are mainly after a major Microsoft update the machine gets screwed up... And how you get a call for service, so far. After repairing these computers and turning off fast boot I haven't received any call backs,... This may be a poor business decision. 🙂 Because now I have nothing to fix to earn money. Brian, also Thank You very much for explaining other issues that can occur, the sleep and hibernate functions getting messed up, that totally makes sense, I would not have stumbled upon those other issues because I generally turn those functions off to avoid problems,... Especially Hibernation. P.S. it's been five months since turning off fast boot, and countless restarts and Microsoft updates, along with installing various software packages, and I've had absolutely no l problems with the "pretty" lighting effects on the computer I built. again, in my life's experience having this function turned on, causes way more problems than the benefits.... Who would've thought after all these years, the shutting down your PC doesn't really turn it off in the traditional thinking, and starting the machine and the kernel from scratch. I hope people caught that in your explanation, and I hope they heard that using the solid-state drive really derives nothing in performance gains.

I keep getting a kernel power error 41 which shows as a critical error in event viewer. It seems to be related to the fast startup as I also get an error for that just before the kernel error every time. If I turn off fast startup it goes away. I originally thought I had an issue with my ram but I ran memtest86 and they passed all tests so I’m not sure why fast startup has decided to stop working. I also fresh installed Windows 11 and fast startup is still an issue.

I had a problem last year that when "fast startup", I would sometimes have one logical processor really busy with what I remember as "system interrupt", or something interrupt. Turning off the fast startup fixed that problem. Also, the system up time gets reset if fast starting is off, otherwise, task manager might report your system being up for many days, right after you turn on the system. I am running off an SSD. Startup is plenty fast with fast startup off.

The whole reason I shut my computer down is to wipe the current state. If I wanted to save the current state forever I would just never turn my computer off. If you want to speed up boot get an SSD and lobotomize windows--the fast startup was always awful and doesn't play well with most other programs. Also--it is very common for "fast start" to actually take longer to shut down... I just got a new system and after the displays shut down the computer would stay on for up to 20 seconds longer before the fans and lights would shut down--that's what reminded me to disable this feature and this video was perfect for telling me WHERE on windows 11.

My laptop is the one I have been having issues with (HP, AMD system) it has a HDD, can convert to an SSD but it does not meet 11's requirements. I've never had any issues with "Fast start-up" (it's currently enabled) but I have tried using my PC with and without this feature. I have a 5-year old HP laptop (only 4GB RAM and 500GB HDD) and with "Fast start-up" in the default setting (On) my BIOS time typically varies between 3.0sec-4.0sec (according to the task manager). I also only run 3 programs on start-up (1 of which is just the HP logo....) another reason why it boots-up so quickly.... I have no clutter on the laptop (at all) and will generally restart the PC twice a day (I'm well-aware of the benefits of a restart over off/on - and that the latter keeps the kernel "alive."). I'm pretty diligent with Windows 10 and other updates too. So I'd probably opt to stay "as is" with fast start-up enabled for the time being.

BIOS time is the time your BIOS spends doing it's POST operations before booting the OS. It has nothing to do with fast start up. Fast Boot in the BIOS is what makes BIOS time shorter if it's enabled, which makes it skip the POST and boot the OS directly.
