Good stuff! But this bike is so stable in corners you could drink a coffee leaned over. Someone below said it gets more looks than Ferraris. I say when a Ferrari drives by, everyone looks at the Ferrari. When a 916 comes by, Ferrari drivers look at the 916 😁

I agree - on smooth sweepers it is incredibly stable and confidence inspiring . I also agree with the review in so much as when it becomes unsettled by bumps it does take a while to settle again . Suspension has come a long way in 20 years … Ironically the only bike I have that gives me the same confidence, on long sweepers is the new Hayabusa gen3 , which achieves it in a different way and is nothing like as nimble .

I have a 748 since 2001. Even this 100 HP-Version is outstanding and keeps up on the road with every bike.

A few years ago, like 18 or 19, I saw one listed for only $5k. It was a time I didn't have the money, license, nor experience to get it... only a couple of years later I'm in a position where I'd very forgivingly spend that 5k and have the bike of my dreams and be able to enjoy it. Well, only a short amount of time later they're not 5 grand anymore, not even close.

Great to watch a review from a younger , current, fast rider . I love mine . I covered mine in the MAM Journals at the beginning of the year . Starting is an art not a science but I find mine starts every time if I turn the ignition on 3 times ( to prime it) , add a tiny bit of “ choke” ( yes - I know it isn’t) and press the starter 🤞 . Thanks for the review . I thought it was very fair and accurate 👍

Great review. I think it speaks volumes about the bike to have a younger person like yourself (and someone who has ridden a lot of bikes) rave about it. I would like to mention one thing: they shouldn't be that difficult to start. I have a 998 and I have owned it for 2 years. Ive only had a starting issue one time and I needed to clean the battery cables. Since then, it starts first try every time even when it is colder.

Jesus I feel relatively young still (38) and when I hear kids talk about these bikes as if there past it try riding one, non of the fancy electronic aids to help you, just raw like real roads bikes should be. Bought a 996 when I was in early 20s and was best bike I ever had and I've had quite a few now. Only just recently bought the 998S (996r engine) which is better. Nothing can match the shear beauty, handling and sound of one of these machines. I encourage everyone to have a go if you've never tried one. Fingers crossed they keep on rising in value... a bike I will hopefully never sell, gives more value everytime I see it, in more ways than one.

Yep 10yrs ago my track bike was a 99 748! And every once in a while I’d crack it down the road!😂 miss that!!!

None of the 916-series should take 15 minutes to start. That's an indication of a tune-up required. My 998 got harder to start prior to needing service, and then after it was perfect. The only other cause of hard starting for me has been when trying (undersized) light weight batteries, especially under 18 degrees Celsius.

On the road, something like this, even the older Desmoquattro versions, 916, 996, etc, make so much sense.., you have to work a little bit to hit mach speed.. The modern machinery makes it just too damn easy to do so! And not too many of them look and sound as good as this does!!

Mine lasted a few months. Alternator nut came off the crank, trashed the main bearing, threw bits up the piston barrel. Broke it for parts. But I did love it while I was able to ride it. 996 to Bala on KZbin.

Thanks for sharing it’s definitely exciting and glad you rode it properly. I had a chance of riding a buddy’s 916 and it’s definitely something I couldn’t forget. I agree it felt modern and all the sensations are just unlike any modern bikes although the brakes didn’t.

Excellent video.....I will always remember my first ride on a Ducati 2001 748. The thing was unlike Anything I'd ever experienced. It felt like it was on a rail! Of course I bought it and didn't let go until I was forced to. I called it "my lady in red." I would love to own any of it older siblings. The saying is true. "There's nothing like a Ducati." Out of all the bikes I've owned, the Ducati is by far the most forlorned.

Fantastic bikes love my 996. Mine was a slow starter until I upgraded the cables from the battery to the starter and added a new earth via the battery box. Virtually chucks the engine out the frame now night and day 👌

You can probably get more out of them too than you can with today’s 200hp litre bikes. They need a lot of electronics to make them road rideable. I miss my old 125hp Ducati 916.

Fast Bikes show 3, distributed by DUKE, released 2001. Still available new from DUKE or on eBay. It says on the back it's a 996R but it's wrong. It's an SPS, a Mille R, Honda SP1, GSXR1k, and an R1. There are several n the series, so if not this one, one of the others.

7rslender, I have a 748 and it is not the easiest bike to ride. It wants to turn wide, the revs rise but drop fast and nearly stalls at stop signs, brakes are great, at least and of course it looks fantastic.

You really should get on a 748R. A lot more fun on the road as you can spank it properly and still have all the good handling e t c, e t c.

Great to look at and own, but had three of the 996 desmoquattro series, and boy were they fragile. When the crank looses it`s preload like after 20k, it goes downhill from there, the crank bearing steel cages start spinning on the bores and if ridden proper hard at that mileage, its not gona see the finish line. And many more inherent issues built in on these, but still would like to own one just as a static showpiece.

That's probably why you want a 998 with the Testastretta motor. Much more reliable. You can also swap out a Desmoquattro motor with a Testastretta like the 1098 or 1198 with some work and have the best of the old and new.

"Twitchy" ? You need to drop the yokes 10mm and the rear ride height up 15mm, fit a 180 rear and wind up the ohlins steering damper. Then it turns and becomes a bit "Twitchy". Take out every mm of throttle free play. You soon get used to how to start it, mine starts on the third chug every time.

25/30 mph in slow traffic these things are painful, i have the 996 , and at normal speeds you feel every bump and you think your spine will come through the top of your head! stunning to look at but best left in the shed or on the track, every day bike they are not !

I get his comments about the handling. They are absolutely rock solid in corners and on long sweepers but if you throw a bump into the mix, it quickly becomes an oh **** moment. I think you can best describe the handling as solid with a wee bit of quirkiness to be mindful of. They are also dodgy at slow speed turns; at slow speeds this chassis turns like a bus and feels super sketchy.

I've owned a 1985 RZ500 for 20 years now, has an Ohlins rear and had the suspension freshened up 12 years ago, still a 37 year old bike, tires are from 2006, and it still handles, shifts, brakes very well. Have it jetted and Jolly Moto's on. Will go 140 mph easily and no ill handling. Rode a mate's 500 Gamma and it was better yet.
