BremSter solves "Buttons" by Fraπ.
A Sudoku using the Buttons constraint.
Solve in Sven's SudokuPad WebApp: sudokupad.app/fx1tjflkia
📋 Puzzle Rules:
• Normal Sudoku rules apply.
• Buttons: Constraints placed in the Buttons must be used in a two cell domino touching that button. If a constraint is repeated in a button, it must be used in different dominos.
• Dominos touched by buttons that do not have a constraint allocated to them may not match any of these constraints. However dominos not touching buttons may match these constraints without restriction.
The following constraints are used in buttons:
• Digits separated by a black dot are in a 2:1 ratio.
• Digits separated by a white dot are consecutive.
• Digits separated by a V sums to 5.
• Digits separated by an X sums to 10.
• Precise Buttons: In this puzzle, the constraints in the buttons must be used in the domino in the direction the constraint is on the button.
For example: The white dot in the leftmost button between row 2 and row 3 must be used to connect r2c5 and r3c6.

Thank you so so much for solving this one! That box 1 spot was unexpected, that was required in the first version, I just love the fact that you found that! Beautiful! Applying the negative constraints was exactly why I thought about using a constraint to "clump" the other constraints together, and I think there's nothing better than quads 😉 Hope to see a puzzle in the future without Precise Buttons... that would be nuts! (I won't do that, sorry 😂) A big thanks to Luda3 and dumediat for being super supportive and for the help for the rules! And thanks to everyone who attempt this! ❤

Nice new ruleset, not as formidable as I feared from the video length. The negative constraint on the blank button sides was key to solving.

I LOVE this new button variant! BTW, it reminds me of some people who are very particular about how they sew on buttons - "the threads can't make an X", for example!

Interesting variation, especially the negative constraint when there are blank bits on (or whole) buttons. Really enjoyed it, needed to pause a few times so I could refresh my thinking. Loved it, and was more approachable than I expected

43:36 got stuck about 1/2 way and had to watch some video. Really neat constraint , fun puzzle. I like how the buttons look like face emojis. I hope that CTC picks this or a future puzzle with this constraint up , it needs to be seen.

I spent about 35 minutes on this before starting the video. I think I like it, but I couldn't get through it. Starting the "solve-along with BremSter" now. [Edit] After a hint, I did get through it, but couldn't have done it without the negative constraint. I really think I could learn to like the Button constraint with a lot of practice.

what I do not quite get is: why use buttons if you can just write in the constrained ?

I was looking for a way to force the negative constraint on some parts of the grid and I thought about quads with constraint inside 😄

I think this notation is useful for signifying a LOCAL negative constraint. There's no other way that I know of to show that a domino cannot enjoy ANY of the standard constraints.
@ChrisVenus
@ChrisVenus 11 күн бұрын
Bremster discussed this a bit towards the end of the video but it boils down to there would be a difference between having no symbol on a domino around a button (meaning negative constraint in play) vs no symbol in the rest of the grid (meaning nothing). Also I think it is designed as an intro to understanding the new rule set and a very simple use of the rules is a good intro before we have to get our head around harder versions of it (ie where it didn't use the precise buttons rule).

A very fun puzzle. Looking forward to more like this! One comment on the rules. When I read "Dominos touched by buttons that do not have a constraint allocated to them may not match any of these constraints" I was very unclear whether the "that do not have a constranit allocated to them" meant the button or the domino. ie was it just the button in Box 9 where there were no allocated constraints that the negative constraint applied or did it mean for example the three other dominos in box 2 around that button that didn't have the white dot allocated to it. In the end I solved assuming it was dominos without constraints allocated and that seemed to work but I think the rules could use some cleaning up. My suggestion would be something like "Dominos that touch the button with both cells and have no constraint from the button allocated to them may not match any of the constraints". I'm definitely looking forward to more of these (with some nervousness!).

Fair point, we tried (well, BremSter tried) to re-write the rules as accurately as possible without even trying the puzzle first, I will integrate that for the next puzzle! Thanks!

this hamstrung me too. tbh I'd just scrap the buttons and have a 5th mark like a grey circle which has the negative constraint.

@@francescopetracca374 There's always going to be a while of trying to find the best wording for any new ruleset. I'm not sure if the above is perfect but something to think about. I enjoyed the puzzle a lot though!

@@letsmakeit110 I'm not 100% sure I see what you mean by scrapping the buttons. My first thought was that you mean another symbol inside the button circle but I'm not sure that is right? That could work too though - something like a ∅ maybe? (That's the empty set character which kind of works as a symbol but is also just like a line crossing out somethign saying "NO". In some ways that would make a much more cluttered grid if you wanted to have a lot of circles with those sorts of dominos compared to just having nothing.

Just to clarify the rules, since a domino can only have one active constraint with the precise buttons rule, is the intended meaning that a domino fulfilling multiple constraints is invalid? Like a 23 pair on a v or white dot?

This was a bit of a head-wrecker, as it took me much of the puzzle to feel fully comfortable with the constraint! I'm still stunned I completed it in just 15:35 (conflict checker off), but I will admit there were times I was sure I was not making logical deductions!
