Power Station Charge Hack!
Portable power stations come with a wide range of onboard charging capability. Even when equipped with higher wattage chargers, they often require hardware, sold separately, to increase the charging time. One simple work around is checking to see if it has a USB-C PD bidirectional port. Use the USB-C PD with a laptop charger or solar panel to boost your speeds! In this video, I show you how to boost charge from wall and solar.
Please check for a USB-C PD port with IN/OUT and read your owners manual. Several brands are selling models both including and excluding a bidirectional PD port.

The first step is making sure that it says in/out on the PD port. If you’ve confirmed in owners manual, then you can charge this way. They’re all different. With the Oupes 600, you plug it in and it turns on automatically. With the other units I’ve used, you do have to turn the port on.

@OutOfOfficeCamping
@OutOfOfficeCamping 2 жыл бұрын
You're right about reviewing the owners manual first. Great point since not all models seem to work both ways. Did you say you had received one of the Techoss 300? I know the model claims on their website and Amazon to be in and out recharging. $40 later, the model they sent me clearly didn't accept a in charging with the PD60 port( I believe I got a early production model since it has a 8 amp DC port) It would have been great since they did send me a 35-watt panel, which has been wonderful. I didn't know if you experienced that also when testing? It's Definaly a hidden secret for those models that do offer recharging through the PD60 port as the Jackery 300 and many new models list. But it really isn't clear. At least I was confused when I first learned about it. I wasn't sure if my fast charge phone plug would work, or did I need a 30-watt or a 40 watt, etc..??? That part was definaly not clear and confusing. After all, who wants to toast a brand new product by plugging power into the wrong port? Great job on the video. You did say refer to your owners manual. 🙂 Mark (& Teresa)
@DIYOutdoorLife
@DIYOutdoorLife 2 жыл бұрын
I'm really glad I emphasized the owners manual part....lol I have actually learned a lot more since I filmed this, some of my subscribers pointed me in the right direction. PD 3.0 is bidirectional, but some manufactures do not allow it to be used that way with their power stations, while other do. It should always be clearly explained in the manual. Most of them are printing "IN/OUT" right below the plug. I've done this dual charge with a ton of systems, but I'm seeing that the bidirectional plugs are being phased out on a lot of brands.
@OutOfOfficeCamping
@OutOfOfficeCamping 2 жыл бұрын
@DIY Outdoor Life I love learning. While I feel I'm a solar generator junkie would you consider doing a follow-up video to share all you have learned? While some may know but I myself and I'm sure others are confused even how the PD60 port works out, let a lone in. As did I, which as I pointed out, with the Techoss claiming there, the new 300 offered such. I didn't even know what plug to buy since they offer different charge rates, watts etc.. I'm sure you get my confusion. You always do an amazing job explaining. Thank you. -M

Since I already have larger panels and an MPPT charge controller, I would like a direct charging port to the battery and charging specs to set up my solar and CC to charge the power station faster. This assumes the manufacturer's MPPT CC is smaller than the maximum allowed for the battery.
@DIYOutdoorLife
@DIYOutdoorLife 2 жыл бұрын
I used to do this with the older Goal zero‘s. You could simply open a compartment on the top and wire in a Victron MPPT… worked great. Anymore, the larger systems come with very fast charging. Some ecoflow, bluetti, and goal zero have 600 watt mppt built in. I would need a truck full of solar panels to hit the limits. Still a fun project, thanks for watching and commenting! -Brian

If so, is the specification for that generally listed in the manual or on the product web page? That would be a good piece of information to know before buying. I deleted my first response after rereading your comment. If you plug an appropriate 120 w panel into the oupes 8mm input, it will only give you 100w. @@dgavern it’s not bidirectional then. They make it unnecessarily complicated, I will try to include a list of the PPS that it works with.

why not just build your own solar panel generator. I did and I had fun doing it too. There's lots of videos for someone that had the DIY bug like I do.

For sure! I've been building them for a long time, even before you could get lithium chemistry cells and BMS. Although I've done some pretty compact systems, it doesn't take the place of the portability of the PPS. There's clearly no match for the quality, longevity, and serviceability of a good home build though. Thanks for watching!

You meant 50% faster, right? I hope so. BTW. You can't call Oupes. There is no phone number to call them. Also, they don't honor sales terms and most likely warranty. I had to dispute CC charge cause they did not issue RMA# nor return address to return the power station within 30 days since the date of delivery.

@@DIYOutdoorLife Bought it directly off their US website. The phone number listed there is to a warehouse which gets inundated with calls from Oupes customers seeking help/support. They did not collect sales tax which is another red flag. Looks like they don't play by the rules.

While this is extremely useful information. It is only relevant in context. While the power delivery standard is bi-directional, not all power delivery ports themselves are! Many devices from bluetti and EcoFlow have output only PD ports. Infant MOST EcoFlow and bluetti products DO NOT have bi directional capability. Please check your facts more thoroughly before making generalizations that will confuse people, especially when citing specific products. I loved a previous video of yours. It was extremely informative and concise. That is why I subscribed. But I tire of misinformation being passed around. Otherwise keep up the good work!

Thank you Chris, but you have your signals crossed a little bit. You are confusing conventional USB-Cs (including high wattage) with PD 3’s (labeled PD). Power delivery ports are bi directional, USB-C’s are not. The majority of the systems on the market in the 500wh class have PD, although, as you say, Eco flow in particular is phasing it out. Bluetti seems to have a million sku’s these days and includes both. The products that I showed people in the video all have bidirectional, including the bluetti and ecoflow, but your point is well taken. I appreciate you highlighting some of the generalizations and I tried to clear this up in the description. I’ll take a look again and see if I can be more precise next time. Thank you!

@@christopherconklin8901 you’re right. It’s classed into 1,2,3,3.2 and on… They even run a 240w now. It’s all over the place and your spot on, it can lead to over generalizations and I’m just trying to help people out. With the labeling system, have you seen a PPS that labels PD on the face that isn’t bidirectional? It seems like they drop the PD label when they’re pure outputs. Like you suggested, I’ll do a deeper dive and to make sure it don’t twist anyone up. I did try to say 10 times to check your owners manual for the rig your working on.
