Good job mate, my bro is a tv repairman, but they are useless now days, unless of course, he has a brother who needs help .. we had a tv repair shop in town, who could repair all sorts of equipment. He had to shutdown as he could not compete with cost of repair versus buying a new one. For him to replace a 50cent part plus his labour, the customers would just weigh it up and buy new, hence, we now have no tv repairman. Sad, just sad, we are a throwaway society now.

One thing as a highly experienced electronics Technician, I would have done is add a 5 Amp capable, diode with a Peak Inverse Voltage 20% higher than the max input voltage across this input. This would be wired in to be reverse biased in normal operation. If connected backwards again, the the diode would be Forward biased, saving that capacitor and any other reverse voltage susceptible expensive and possibly hard or impossible to find parts such as application specific ICs. .

The manufacturer should probably put one of those diagrams depicting the input voltage/polarity right next to the input port. Also, I am surprise there wasn't some sort of protection on the input before that capacitor. I'm even more surprised that nothing else broke.
@robwebnoid5763
@robwebnoid5763 Жыл бұрын
Yes true, there is no diagram on the front. It should look like the standard " ---(+ --- " next to that port. I don't know "jack" about Jackery, so I would not have known the polarity either, because anyone would make that mistake especially if they don't have the manual handy & that companies still use both polarities using the same kind of jacks/plugs. On wallwart adapters, I always look for that polarity diagram on a sticky label or case embossing before trying it out.

It is strange where the capacitor is as the device looks to have reverse polarity protection - those two chips look like MOSFETs from the way the pins are connected, and the SW1 (switch) designator on the board.

Awesome and helpful video. I picked one of these out of the battery recycling station today and did an initial charge test with a low-watt phone charger and the display lit up dimly so I have hope that it's serviceable. I will test charge it tomorrow with a USB-C PD 45 watt charger that I have and see if it will take a charge that way. Thank you for the cautions about reversing polarity with the main input charging port -- I will use caution when testing different charging adapters with this unit. Conversely, I now know how to identify a faulty capacitor on its charge circuit. Thank you.

Great video - very clear. I had the same sinking feeling you describe when I accidentally connected three 200 watt Bluetti solar panels (in series) to my explorer 500, giving it well over 400 watts at about 60 volts. No smoke, but I did catch a bit of a burning odor. The input charging port is now dead, of course. I disassembled the unit and checked the PCB with the charging jack on it, and really could not see anything obvious - all of the nearby capacitors look fine. I have a good multimeter, but unfortunately the unit no longer has any charge left, which precludes more sleuthing. I wish I had your skills and equipment. Any ideas about how to proceed would be welcome.

Sorry to hear! Really, you’ll need to track down the part that got fried and replace it. It can be tricky but there are tricks, like giving the board power ( not connected to the battery) and seeing if something gets hot (a short), etc. Use diode and continuity modes to find shorts and open circuits. You could replace the board if you can find one for sale.

Instead of plugging into AC socket on the wall to charge up your power station battery, he used a solar panel to charge up the battery. A portable solar panel can be plugged in directly into the power station to recharge the battery. The solar panel cable attaches to an SAE Adapter and this adapter plug fits into the INPUT (round socket hole) of the power station. SAE stands for Society of Automotive Engineers, by the way. The wrong solar cable polarity end went into the SAE Adapter, so it shorted out the capacitor on the battery side. I'm not electrically inclined but deducing this is what happened. I have little knowledge of electrical wiring.

TY so much for the video! 😃I am troubleshooting my Jackery 500. I can't get it to hold a charge anymore it seems, and it's only a yr old. When the Jackery itself is plugged in, it will pass power no problem. You unplug the Jackery from the wall, and the whole thing goes dead. The display will come on and read 100%, but that's false. I've tried resetting it by holding down the display button for 10 seconds, and watching it run through everything. It will reset to show something like 14% and charging, but never charges the battery. (I have left it charging for more than a day plugged into the wall, only to open it up and find the battery shows almost no voltage). Still dead in the water and working on it. Would you have any idea what the issue is? The fuses all look good. Caps look good, and nothing burnt on the boards. Many thanks if you can offer any advice. 🙃 I'm hoping I am not stuck with a really expensive paper weight lol

So when you measure the internal battery leads you are getting near 0 volts? That seems strange. If true then my guess is that the bms likely won’t attempt to charge the battery cells. There is a mixup in polarity. The typical DC jack has the inner pin as positive and the outer casing as negative. Many power stations can handle a reverse polarity on input, but apparently not this one. The solar panel has a positive and negative (since it’s a DC device) and with connectors it’s possible to get the polarity wrong (what I did).

Yes. I don't know anything about electricity either. You are here to learn not to palm it off to someone else. If too lazy or insecure to learn, then why come here at all? Think it through. Get the tools. Get the parts. Get some advice face to face with an electrical shop guy. Then watch this video again. Then do it. One new thing learned. Be aware of safety issues. Cover your eyes, wear rubber shoes, rubber gloves, and work on a non metal table.

Thanks! Well, at first when I saw all of the smoke coming out the sides that's what I thought. Though I didn't know what I would get in to, I was happy to see that the capacitor seems to be the only damage.

What's funny is that I have cheap devices that they work easy between 9-24v with polarity protection. But expensive stuff came with only one input (12v or 24v) no protection.

A little hard to understand what you mean, but yes laptops sometimes use them, but these days most companies use flat cells to make devices thinner.

Do you mean cold or hot temps? The high end temps are probably not an issue with most devices. But if the unit will be below freezing then you want to get a battery that has a heater on it (installed or built in).
@mjremy2605
@mjremy2605 4 ай бұрын
Lithium always. Keep it warm not cold. Also, Inverter should be True Sine otherwise your cell phone and laptop will be permanently damaged. Modified Sine inverters are cheap rubbish that will damage a $1500 computer or phone. Yeti Goal Zero 400 is pricey but has lithium batteries, and a true sine inverter safe for delicate electronics. It also does not die on you early like the Lead Acid batteries that don't hold a charge. I mean most of these have 18AH Lead Acid batteries. You can only discharge that to 50% or 9 AH. Are you kidding? That is worthless.

@@FrugalRepair I dont know. Ive used it twice since I bought it. It was reading 55%. I did a hard reset and now it reads 65%. I cant charge it and I cant charge anything with it. Its possible the display is not reading properly and voltage is lower than whats being displayed.

Hilarious how experienced people with excellent repair skills blows equipment by making connection mistakes. If experienced people can blow up things not surprising that normal people do it accidentally. They realy need to add fuse protection to these devices. In the old days almostv everything was fused.
@FrugalRepair
@FrugalRepair Жыл бұрын
It tells me two things, 1 - These units should have reverse polarity protection. 2 - I should have checked the polarity first rather than assuming because the connections fit. And usually repair people get better at repairing because they have broken a lot of things ahead of time and it became a learning experience.

Not even watching your video. Did you push and hold the display for 10 seconds. All Jackery has safety feature. To reset models 1000 and smaller. Push and hold display button for 10 seconds. 1500 and up, push and hold both display and dc button for 13 seconds. It resets the Jackery.

That’s unfortunate because it’s much more corrosive. You want to open that up and see if you can identify where the corrosion is and hopefully ID the faulty parts, replace and clean thoroughly and get it running again.
