Kevin Peek. Absolute artist when it came down to being the best.

Another classic from one of the overlooked geniuses of progressive rock. Kevin, you are sadly missed.

I actually worked with Kevin's daughter for a while. When she told me who her Dad was, I was gobsmacked, as I am a big Sky fan, and had a cassette copy of Awakening.

Must take it's place as one of the greatest songs of all time alongside the much more recognisably hip stuff like Tim Buckley, Roy Harper, Mountain, Boys Next Door, Moffs, Housemartins etc etc etc etc. This is the clear standout from the album, but the album is quite good really, and worth collecting.

Title is "Faster than Light". The keyboard part at the beginning and end of this (7:02) always reminds me of a kids' fantasy tv show that was on when I was about 6-10 (or younger). I can't remember what it was about, all I remember is that it had a catchphrase "look into my eyes" said by someone (a wizard?) that looked or sounded like the bad guy in the Smurfs. It would have been a short-lived British program from the 80s. Btw, this is a likeable Kevin Peek record. He didn't get a chance to make many. His electric duo with JW on SKYFIVELIVE playing Sakura was a great example of how he had a distinctive style on electric guitar (I think his reputation was being a strictly session player for others). I really like the simple melody he plays on slide guitar on City on the Water on this album. He did some tunes for SKY and arranged their "toccata hit", plus "my gazelle" and others. The drummer's use of hi-hat after 6:47 is inspired on this track.

Bless Google: mystery solved: the program was called "Into The Labyrinth" and the sorcerer was called "Rothgo", although I haven't identified a musical link yet...

slight similarity in small sections of this tune to the sung vocal melody, maybe. Still puts my brain in the same place/space somehow. Stop talking to yourself, Owen. kzbin.info/www/bejne/iaDEq4Sti96tedU

My childhood was in the 70's and early 80's and I can honestly say that I have never heard of the tv program Into the Labyrinth. I've spent most of that time glued to the tv as a kid but that's a new one on me, and I thought I knew them all. It must have been late 80's not for me to know that one.

Any musician in a band like that would need to be a serious virtuoso to get a seat at the table.
