we had a mantis shrimp as a pet before and it was really awesome...aside from its powerpunch hammer-like claws, ours had also this samurai-like claw that would tear their preys apart...we had set up an aquarium about half an inch thick for this creature along with othe fishes and at night, we could hear it banging the enclosure! seeing this vid just made me miss our pet...

That's a good physics question! I believe the salt water the fish lives in has a lot to do with cushioning the recoil, but the force isn't coming from the shrimp as a whole, it is coming from the claw on impact. So the reciprocating force is exerted on the shrimp's claw and disperses as kinetic energy through the shrimp's body and the surrounding water.

What I find truly incredible is as you watch the super slow motion of the balloon popping at the beginning. You can also notice the extremely rapid eye movements of the guy reacting to the popping. Maybe because of the change in light reflection from the lack of yellow balloon 6 inches from his face, or maybe something else. Just some food for thought.

If both of them hit each other, they die, but the thing is other than that slight speed advantage the pistol is outmatched. Mantis shrimp are much bigger, more agile, and much smarter. Unless they are equal size and the pistol gets a solid hit quickly, I don't see it winning.
