I'm in no way sayin this is on you; It's not. This IS a great video. I was inspired. I bought jack stands, breaker bar, pry bar, extra 19mm socket and the struts of course. I got up early today to beat the sun, Lifted my Armada, place the jack stands, removed on tire. loosend (1/4 turn) the 14mm on top the strut. Then hit a wall with the bottom strut nut, I couldn't break it ti save my life. I thought I'd get a hernia. I was so pissed. Then I put everything back and went to my mechanic. And thats where it is now. I soaked all the bolts two days earlier but, I couldn't break the nut free.

Great video.. I am replacing my strut assembly and decided to put a leveling kit. Will this method allow me the slack I need to add my spacer on top of strut?
@awesomexistence4 жыл бұрын
Pathfinder shock/spring assembly replacement is near identical. Exception is the stabilizer bar interferes with removing the lower shock bolt. Some choose to unbolt the stabilizer bar. I chose a different remedy. This is remedied by lifting/compressing the suspension until the bolt will clear. The bolt is under tension however a pneumatic impact wrench will run it out. Also the shock would not drop free and clear without disconnecting the stabilizer bar end knuckle bolt and rotating it out of the way allowing the shock to drop enough to clear the top. Again by lifting the suspension until the knuckle bolt is free to rotate out of the stabilizer bar. Then drop the suspension and remove the shock. Install the new assembly. Upon assembly of the lower shock bolt, I chose to reverse the bolt direction so as to easily insert or remove it and have had no clearance issues or adverse issues with the bolt in this direction. Up with the suspension again to realign the knuckle bolt and fasten it. In hindsight, I should have ordered new stabilizer end links since I ended up unbolting the ends anyway and would have been an ideal time to replace them. Drive quality feels back to new. I definitely think replacing as an assembly (shock and spring) is the way to go as any spring fatigue /sag will affect the new shock performance.

T Nasir my 2008 Pathfinder had a very bad case of bump steer. Replaced the factory shocks a few years ago when I first felt the bump steer with Bilstein shocks and it didn't help. A few months later I replaced the shocks again with oem shocks and the problem continued getting worse. A month ago I started looking into replacing the whole front end and rear end but decided to replace the springs first and re-use the oem shocks I had already installed. Literally just did this yesterday and no more bump steer.

@BigBassMafia There are 4 bolts on the top of the strut assembly that are 14mm, you will only take off the outer 3. The one in the middle (on top) is not removed if replacing the entire assembly, which I highly recommend. Hopefully that answered your question.

Makes me wonder why the mechanic didn't offer me the option of just replace the Coil spring ( Which had snap off) with replacing the whole assembly with a quick strut. Especially with the cost of a quick strut compare to a Coil spring(from VW) - wasn't cheap for sure. Especially with the amount of money I spent. Next time I will ask..This one seems easier than doing a VW Jetta for sure.

@drjd2real2 жыл бұрын
@@SchofieldRacingBilstein doesn't make the whole assembly, but I don't like quick struts. I have a 2010 qx56 and all of the shocks and springs are bad. Both bags are busted in the rear and the compressor doesn't work, but I'm doing the conversion in the rear with Bilstein. I might just use new springs from rockauto. For the front the springs have to be compressed to install the Bilstein or I might just get the complete Kyb complete struts from autozone, but I still think the Bilstein is better. It just takes more time to install. I put some kyb on my Lexus in the front and they are bad now. They lasted maybe 2 years and that was oem replacement. I think strutmasters might make the best quick struts for me but they are kinda expensive.

Take it to a parking lot with speed bumps. It shouldn't make any popping noises when going about 10-15 mph over one. If it does, its usually the struts making the noise.

@@duncangregho1986 I am getting ready to add a 2" level to my Nissan Titan which from what I can tell by checking the part #'s for the Armada and the Titan the front ends are the same. I am going to us a set of strut spring compressors to get the extra 1.375 thickness of the spacer. Once i remove the wheel I am going to jack the lower arm up and install the spring compressors then remove the upper bolts and lower strut bolts. Then slowly let the jack down and remove the strut, install the spacer on top. Then put strut back in planning on putting the bolts on top back on to hold it in place and then jack the lower A arm back up till the bottom bolt will go into the strut. Remove the strut compressor. Then tighten everything up to specs, Reason i am putting the compressors on before i remove the strut is so if there is something (upper mount, tie rod, lower A arm, etc.) the compressors will hit when I put it back together I will know before I remove the strut. I don't want to remove the strut, compress it, put the spacer on and then go to put it back together and find out I can't because the compressor is hitting something and not allowing it all to slide back into place and the have to redo that part of the instal. FYI: Suspensions are like a right triangle if move the side away from the point up 2" the point only moves up very little! The same idea works if you go up 1.375" 3/4 the way along the bottom from the point, the other side goes up 2". Think of your upper and lower a arms as two sides a triangle and the wheel is the side from the point.
