of cause they do. nothing wrong with sailing appartment that can go 7-10 knots. to each his own. i think TS5 is a racing boat. It looks fun but not something you can stick a family of 4-5 people in comfortably while enjoying ability of travel and stay sane.

No worries, they can still slow down anytime should they realize that the weather is awesome and the sky/water amazing... Even if you were travelling your entire life you wouldn't be able to explore more than 20% of earth's treasures, drastically less than 20% if at 3.5 knots, so speed buys time and time buys more amazing experiences 🌍 Cruising at an average of 3.5 statistically puts you in a situation where you can get caught by all kind of sailing conditions: the worst or the best. It's not an advantage, its just a consequence of the speed configuration that can quickly turn into a nightmare if the weather conditions go against you. At 3.5 average, even if you manage to push a higher speed on a spot period with the help of the engines, you're increasing luck's stake in your sailing equation. There are very few sailors that would willingly put themselves at the mercy of luck...

@jeremyrowley1240
@jeremyrowley1240 2 жыл бұрын
It is 3000 miles across, but you can't sail directly towards the destination. If you sailed directly there you would actually sail into a windless hole in the middle of the Atlantic, so you have to follow the trade winds which take you down to the Cape Verde's and then across. Therefore the speed as calculated using the actual distance logged (sailed) by the boat.

The untold lesson is when you go really fast, your kinetic energy is dangerous. hence to loss of the vessel and one crew.
@angela1984a
@angela1984a 11 ай бұрын
Another untold lesson is that you don't have to go faster than ~9-10 knots. All sailing vessels can be reefed down... The advantage of performance multihulls is that they can sail in light wind conditions when other boats will either have to burn diesel or will just bob around. And often sailing a performance multihull in those light wind conditions is rather pleasant...

@g33k0-83 ⛵️ Regis Guillemot's HALLUCINE catamaran capsizes off Vigo, one dead and three rescued. 😱 English translation from original French text at #voilesetvoiliers HALLUCINE, the TS5 catamaran of the French yachtsman Régis Guillemot capsized Friday evening off Vigo (Spain), after having collided with an UFO. Four people were on board. One of the team members died, his body was found. Régis Guillemot and the other two crew members were rescued by a freighter which dropped them off in the Azores. Régis Guillemot's HALLUCINE catamaran capsized at around 10 p.m. on Friday in the north-west of Vigo (Spain) after hitting an UFO (unidentified floating object). A man is missing, the team mate who was on watch outside. The other two crew members and the skipper Régis Guillemot were saved by a freighter. HALLUCINE had sailed from the Gulf of Morbihan and was heading for the Canaries, before crossing the Atlantic to the West Indies when the collision occurred. Skilled sailor, Régis Guillemot has raced numerous offshore races (winner of the Route du Rhum 2002 in his category). He is also the founder of Régis Guillemot Charter, a charter and sailboat cruise company based in Marin in Martinique, a company he had recently sold. Régis Guillemot is finally the cousin of another great sailor: Marc Guillemot (3rd in the Vendée Globe 2008), who is also his relay on land and to whom he reported the accident. “They don't understand what happened, they're in shock. The navigation was calm and the TS5 is a very safe, very seaworthy boat. There was a little sea but no more than 16 to 20 knots of wind and they were sailing peacefully, under-canvas, with two reefs in the mainsail before the collision. They don't know what they hit, maybe a container, ”explains Marc Guillemot. He continues: "the person on watch outside was taken away, his body was found 36 hours later". Régis Guillemot and his two other friends - who were inside at the time of the collision - were able to alert the emergency services. They were eventually picked up by a freighter after taking place in their liferaft. This freighter dropped them off in the Azores today, Tuesday 10 November 2020. “Régis told me that when they were picked up by the freighter, HALLUCINE was full of water in its rear part, the bows were pointing upwards and there was carbon debris. I informed the Vendée Globe race director of the presence of the overturned boat since the fleet was passing fairly close to the sinking area, "said Marc Guillemot. It is very impressive but it is not typical. I think that if you look at all ARC crossings over the years then you will find that multihulls are no faster than monohulls. Loaded up in the hands of inexpert crews they have to throttle back. They do have considrable advantages with one very great disadvantage - they may capsize.
