@@NewWorldHoarder Yes we have seen the Red's recently, hence his comment. You see, unlike little girls like you. Many of us have seen the Red's at their peak, flying the Gnat's doing incredible low level aerobatics with breaks over the crowd. I still to this day remember the Red's show at Blackbush, a Gnat coming in from the west at less than head height. You have no idea what you have missed.. Correction:- the Gnat was coming in from the East, I was on the other side of the runway, on the heath.

Yepp, I grew up near Biggin Hill and used to ride up on my Raleigh Chopper and sneak into the air fair, from the fence, about where they make Spitfires now, it was fantastic, Vulcan, Buccaneers etc etc, all balls out, and doing stuff you would be grounded for now. Last airshow I went to in the UK was more circuits and bumps, pathetic.

I worry that the Aeralis project may suffer the same fate as the Slingsby Firecracker back in the eighties. The RAF needed a replacement for the Jet Provost and the Embraer Tucano was chosen instead. A shame, and at the time I wondered if this was purely a political decision. But perhaps there were concerns about a smaller company being robust enough to ultimately follow through?

Please correct me if I’m wrong but the T2 cannot be used for the type of aerobatics the Reds need them for, I can’t remember wether it’s the airframe or software or a combination of both. Also, as with the Gnat the Hawk being used by the Reds was a big marketing tool for overseas sales of the Aircraft, if we haven’t got a “homemade” aircraft to sell they’ll unfortunately be no team, this will also be a very negative thing for Airshows.

I have been amazed how long the reds have been going. They were “old” jets when I left the RAF back in 1998. I don’t hold much hope for a British replacement. Little point in doing an end of life upgrade to delay the inevitable. Another shameful and embarrassing lack of foresight and ineptitude by successive Governments. RAF is not a serious force anymore and has now reverted back to its former self, the RFC (Royal Flying Club) A sad demise.

The RAF lost its sense of direction years ago - rebadge it as AAC and let Land pay the bills.

Tim, you need to head up a committee or steering group to advise the government on this stuff. You've got no skin in the game and you've been at the sharp end of these issues. You cannot know what's required if you've only ever flown a desk. They need gripping or we'll end up with a shitshow.

The retirement of Concord had nothing to do with the government. It was down to them being too expensive for BA and Air France to maintain and operate them.

If we sell the Red Arrows to India then our government will probably increase the funding and pay for a new fleet. The reason they aren't replacing them is because the Red Arrows are about national pride, moral and entertainment.. which our government aren't interested in.

Totally understand why you're saying tranche 1 Typhoon will never happen but anything is possible with the money/political will. A team of 4 instead of 9? Either way it is a real shame, many mates have gone through the reds, its an institution and a huge recruiting tool. As I type that, I realise airshows are rapidly becoming a thing of the past so.....😢
@forrestetiКүн бұрын
In my opinion the T2 would be unsuitable due to the maintenance costs and it’s over complex nature in relation to the T1. It will be interesting to see how other Hawk using display teams fair with more modern replacements in the near future.

What about the Goshawk? They were still being manufactured this century. Remove all the navy kit to reduce price/weight. Many air forces around the world, USAF included, are in this exact same dilemma with ageing jet trainers.
@deet5072Күн бұрын
and actually thinking about it, its worse then you mentioned because even if they did get "something" in line to replace them, with by the time we get them the people who made it magic would have left. Same reason there will never been another Mildenhall Airshow, not because they wouldnt do it, but because everyone that knew how to throw on a good show left and they cant do it.

It’s not like the OSD for Hawk T1 hasn’t been known for at least a decade. All UK mil aircraft fleets have a planned lifespan, that may or may not be extended. But there is always a point where the juice isn’t worth the squeeze.

The main is, Why were BAe not financed to design and build it's replacement? Surely the other simpl option would be to build an updated Hawk....Built in the UK as before employing 1,000's of skilled people. I guess the way drones have developed and how remote pilot vehicles are used there could be a strong argument not to replace any piloted aircraft.
