Is it in a dire situation though ,really? Compared to when? I took an elderly relative to an appointment at an NHS hospital two days ago. Free of charge (apart from the car parking). Seen promptly and out. Drove home. Roads were busy but functioned and worked. Street lights. Many, many expensive cars about. In peace. No gun battles. Passed shops full of food, rammed full of shoppers...listening to the BBC (impartial news) listening to people who are free to criticise Starmer, Farage et al.....and on and on. Britons need to give themselves a break from the incessant gloom they heap upon themselves.

As a kid I witnessed the Red Arrows being introduced to the Hawk at RAF Coltishall. The team were there with their Gnats and a bunch of senior officers. My Dad (ex Lancaster aircrew) had taken me and my Mum (who had been promised a cream tea to compensate for the boys day out) to the base to where the Hawker test pilot was due to fly in the Hawk which he duly did, giving a nice display before landing and emerging in a white flying suit, those were the days! The Red Arrows then started up the Gnats and gave a fantastic display. All this took so long that while I gained a wonderful experience my Mum never got her cream tea.

At least in Australia, we don't have the "has to be Australian" culture. Our Areobatics team, The Roulettes, flies the Pilatus PC-21 trainer. Not as sexy as a jet but it does the job. The PC-21's replaced the '80's generation PC-9's, so hopefully they'll still be around for a bit. We use the Hawk for jet conversion too but even that's "too expensive" for the Roulettes by our standards. At the end of the day, someone's just gonna have to come up wih a new jet! Good luck.

It’s a sad state of affairs we don’t have a British fast jet trainer. How we have declined. The noise I can still think back to. Ah the days…

I worry that the Aeralis project may suffer the same fate as the Slingsby Firecracker back in the eighties. The RAF needed a replacement for the Jet Provost and the Embraer Tucano was chosen instead. A shame, and at the time I wondered if this was purely a political decision. But perhaps there were concerns about a smaller company being robust enough to ultimately follow through?

Please correct me if I’m wrong but the T2 cannot be used for the type of aerobatics the Reds need them for, I can’t remember wether it’s the airframe or software or a combination of both. Also, as with the Gnat the Hawk being used by the Reds was a big marketing tool for overseas sales of the Aircraft, if we haven’t got a “homemade” aircraft to sell they’ll unfortunately be no team, this will also be a very negative thing for Airshows.

I have been amazed how long the reds have been going. They were “old” jets when I left the RAF back in 1998. I don’t hold much hope for a British replacement. Little point in doing an end of life upgrade to delay the inevitable. Another shameful and embarrassing lack of foresight and ineptitude by successive Governments. RAF is not a serious force anymore and has now reverted back to its former self, the RFC (Royal Flying Club) A sad demise.

Surely the other simpl option would be to build an updated Hawk....Built in the UK as before employing 1,000's of skilled people. I guess the way drones have developed and how remote pilot vehicles are used there could be a strong argument not to replace any piloted aircraft.
