Seeing a dead shark inside a Tank with fluids to preserve it, is scarier than an abandoned Animatronic!

It makes me sad that these amazing works of art are so casually discarded and destroyed. There should be a dedicated museum for puppets and animatronics like these! They are such remarkable creations.
@vectorwolf4 ай бұрын
Sadly, a lot of the materials used in SFX just don't have any longevity, just by their nature. Specifically silicone rubber and latex will both self destruct over time regardless of what you try to do to preserve it. A lot of it has to do with the solvents in the materials that makes them flexible in the first place... they literally rot out the props from within.
@MindiB4 ай бұрын
@@vectorwolf Good point. Still sad, though. I think about some of the stop-motion puppets from the classic Rankin-Bass “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” (I’m old) being found in an attic. Some smart chemist or physicist needs to get to work on preservation techniques! Vacuum-sealing? Magic spray? :p
@vectorwolf4 ай бұрын
@@MindiB The best I can think of is to use the molds to make some sort of archival cast in something more durable... but honestly, props are ephemera at the end of the day. They get torn up during filming and fall apart more soon after. We still have the media they helped create, though, and that's a form of immortality.
@MindiB4 ай бұрын
@@vectorwolf Their preservation on film is definitely a good thing, but I also admire them as static works of art-the sculpting, the painting, the brilliant mixed media of eyes and hair and teeth, the ingenuity of the engineering that allows movement. So we need lots of behind-the-scenes footage from the prop shops, too, to highlight this work up close and in progress! And to give the artists a few deserved moments of fame. Archival casts, especially if they can be finished with paint, etc., would be a terrific option for at least some pieces (can’t save ‘em all, I know).
