I'm a nurse and have had to catheterize morbidly obese patients. A catheter drains urine from your body. Obese people (especially females) and highly prone to serious UTI's because they cannot clean themselves properly. (Think about that one for a long time.) One more than one occasion, I had to put the patient in a Trendelenburg position, with the feet of the bed raised and head down. Then two problems occur. First, they have problems breathing. Then, they slide up to the top of the bed. Even then, I will have to have someone assist me by lifting the rolls of tissue so I can actually see their urethra. Does no good if it's in the wrong place and I could cause a worse infection if the catheter is contaminated while I'm doing it. Had one patient so large none of the nurses could get a catheter in. Called in a urologist, who had the patient get on her hands and knees so he could insert it from behind. It was the only way he could manage it. Men are not off the hook. With men who are too obese, their penis becomes inverted. In other words, it shrinks back in the bodies. This makes them prone to UTI's, fungal infections, cannot clean themselves properly, have to sit on the side of the bed and urinate in a bucket. They always smell like urine. I have also seen it happen where a man got adhesions, meaning the skin of his penis became attached to the surrounding tissue, which required surgery to correct. Imagine having the skin of your penis surgically removed because it grew to the tissue around it, then having it packed for weeks with petroleum gauze to prevent it happening again. All because of morbid obesity.
